1 CENTRE FOR THE FUTURE OF HEALTH SPEAKERS BIOGRAPHIES NOVEMBER 26-27, 2015 TORONTO, ON GABRIELA PRADA Director, Health Innovation, Policy and Evaluation The Conference Board of Canada Dr. Gabriela Prada is the Director of Health Innovation, Policy and Evaluation at The Conference Board of Canada. She has 20 years of experience as a physician, management consultant, policy researcher, and administrator. She provides leadership and oversight to all contract research and executive network activities within her group and often speaks on behalf of the Conference Board on health-related topics. Gabriela has published several health care policy reports and has led projects in primary care, health system performance, and health innovation that have guided policies at provincial and federal levels. Her recent work in advancing innovation procurement has caught the attention of several Canadian provinces, as well as European countries and the Inter-American Development Bank. Gabriela has strong management, organizational, and leadership skills and is active in several boards, including the Canadian Network for Environmental Scanning in Health and the World Future Society. She is currently the Chair of the Eastern Ontario Chapter of the Canadian College of Health Leaders. In addition, she is a reviewer for various policy journals and a mentor. Gabriela has a master s degree in health administration from the University of Ottawa and is a Certified Health Executive. NEIL FRASER President, Medtronic Canada, and Chair, Centre for the Future of Health Mr. Neil Fraser joined Medtronic Canada in 1984 and, following numerous commercial positions, was promoted to President in Under Neil s leadership, Medtronic Canada has been a significant leader in business model innovation, market position, productivity and efficiency. He is proud of the high level of engagement among employees, faced with a challenging healthcare environment and one of the largest integrations in medical device history, following the acquisition of Covidien in Medtronic Canada is honoured to receive numerous awards including: Canada s Best Large Workplaces, Top 100 Employer in Canada five years in a row, and LEED Silver Certification of our new Brampton headquarters. Neil is passionate about shaping the Canadian health technology market environment through stakeholder engagement strategies both federally and provincially, and driving an innovation agenda that will result in better health care for Canadians. 2 Neil is particularly proud to have been the executive sponsor of one of the most important cardiology device trials ever conducted in Canada: RAFT (Resynchronization/Defibrillation for Ambulatory Heart Failure Trial) which recruited 1,798 patients, 90% from Canada, and has resulted in new guidelines worldwide for Heart Failure (HF). Prior to Medtronic, Neil worked for Alcan Canada Products Ltd. and was responsible for the introduction of aluminum cans to Canada, including the initiation of curbside recycling programs in Ontario and Quebec in partnership with Environment Ministries. He also worked for Procter & Gamble Inc. where he was responsible for the start-up of a new automated cake mix technology and the patented invention of a new solvent-based household cleaner technology which became a world product: Liquid Spic & Span. Neil has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. He holds a P.Eng. and is a member of Professional Engineers Ontario. PAUL RICE Head of Technology Strategy, Digital Health NHS England Dr. Paul Rice is the Head of Technology Strategy on the Digital Health team in NHS England. Paul leads the team that is instrumental in delivering a digitally enabled and paperless NHS. For the past two years he has overseen delivery of four major capital funds worth in excess of 300m that help the NHS build the capability to introduce integrated digital care records and enable nurses to transform practice, enabled by technology, to release time to care. He was a major contributor to the National Information Board s roadmap document Personalised Health and Care 2020 published last November the first articulation by the health and care system of its commitment to release the benefits of digital technology, data and intelligence. He is currently leading one of the key delivery workstreams. Paul was formerly the Director of the Long Term Conditions programme in Yorkshire and Humber with a particular focus on Telehealth. He has been a Primary Care Trust Director, a transformation director in the NHS Modernisation Agency and a policy lead in the Department of Health. He has published and spoken widely on the challenges and opportunities to deliver high quality, efficient and effective service models utilising assistive technology/telehealth/information technology. Paul holds a first degree in Law and Accounting and a Doctorate in Medical Law and Bioethics. RUEBEN DEVLIN President and Chief Executive Officer Humber River Hospital Dr. Rueben Devlin has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Humber River Hospital in Toronto since August of The Hospital delivers acute medical services to over 850,000 people in northwest Greater Toronto. An orthopaedic surgeon, Rueben completed his medical school and residency training at the University of Toronto. During his 17 years practicing in Newmarket, Rueben held senior hospital positions, including Chief of Surgery and Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee. He had a special interest in joint replacement surgery and sports medicine. Under Rueben s guidance, Accreditation Canada, in its most recent survey of hospital services, awarded Humber River its highest possible ranking: Accreditation with Exemplary Standing. In February of 2015, the National Research Corporation of Canada named Humber River as the Top Performing Hospital for Overall Paediatric Inpatient Care in the Greater Toronto Area. Humber River Hospital is affiliated with medical schools at the University of Toronto and at Queen s University. A leading force behind Humber River Hospital s strategic vision for the future of its organization, Rueben steered the hospital s redevelopment project from inception through to substantial completion on May 11, And on 2

3 October 18, 2015, the vision he championed came to life as the new Humber River Hospital, North America s first fully digital hospital, opened its doors for patient care. Groundbreaking in its approach to acute care hospital design and the correlating integration of technology as drivers of patient care enhancement, the new hospital has attracted interest from across Canada, the U.S. and Europe, as hospital designers look to Humber for advice to inform their own hospital capital projects. The Humber River project has gathered a number of national and international awards. It received The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships Gold Award in the Infrastructure Category at the Council s 2015 National Awards for Innovation and Excellence in Public-Private Partnerships. It was named Best Accommodation Project at the May 2013 Partnership Awards in London, UK. Nominees included projects in Australia, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. The project was selected as Best Healthcare Project, North America at the January 2013 World Finance Magazine Public Private Partnerships Awards, the presentation of the Award made to Rueben during a ceremony at the London Stock Exchange. In November of 2012, the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships presented the project with the Silver Project Finance Award at its National Awards for Innovation & Excellence. Rueben has lectured at national and international meetings on the use of lean, green and digital hospital design concepts to enhance the patient and family hospital experience. DAVID JAFFRAY Executive Vice-President, Innovation and Technology University Health Network Dr. David Jaffray graduated from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with a B.Sc. in Physics (Hons.) in 1988 and completed his Ph.D. in the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario in Following graduation, he took a position as Staff Physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan where he instigated a direction of research that garnered funding from the NIH and from congressionally-directed funding programs. David became a Board Certified Medical Physicist (ABMP Radiation Oncology) in In 2002, David joined the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Ontario as Head of Radiation Physics and a Senior Scientist within the Ontario Cancer Institute. David holds the Fidani Chair in Radiation Physics and is a principal in the STTARR Innovation Centre of the University Health Network. He is appointed as a Professor in the Departments of Radiation Oncology, Medical Biophysics, and Institute for Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. His primary area of research over the past 10 years has been in the development and application of imageguided radiation therapy. He has over 5 patents issued and several licensed, including, kilovoltage conebeam computed tomography for image-guided radiation therapy. David has in excess of 120 peer-reviewed publications in the field, in excess of 100 invited lectures, and holds numerous peer-review and industry sponsored research grants. He sits on numerous scientific and research boards and has contributed to the NIH and CIHR grant review process for several years. He is a member at large of the Science Council of the AAPM and has an active teaching role in workshops and annual meeting of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). He has an active interest in commercialization and led the development of a variety of commercial products including software and hardware for QA and the development of small animal irradiator systems for basic research. He has successfully supervised over 20 graduate students and fellows. David has won each of the major prizes in the field of the medical physics, including, the Sylvia Sorkin-Greenfield Award, The Farrington Daniels Award, and the Sylvia Fedoruk Award. In 2004, David was identified as one of Canada s Top 40 Under 40 and was recognized by The University of Western Ontario with their Young Alumni Award. His current research interests focus on the development of novel approaches of targeting and applying radiation therapy and translating these advances to clinical practice. 3

4 MICHAEL BIDU Founder and Chief Executive Officer Interface Health Society Mr. Michael Bidu is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Interface Health Society, a not-for-profit virtual global digital health accelerator based in Vancouver, BC supported by TELUS, Genome BC, Providence Health Care Research Institute, Lumira Capital, BC Government, NRC-IRAP, Western Economic Diversification and 20+ accelerators and incubators from North America, Europe, Asia and Middle East. Michael is a serial entrepreneur with eight start-ups under his belt, an award-winner marketer, a mentor and advisor, and a judge in digital health and digital media competitions. He has 25 years of experience in technology, innovation, business and creative industries working with global brands such as TELUS, Microsoft, Qualcomm, EA, Disney, Ubisoft, Nokia and hundreds of startups and SMEs. Michael sits on the board of Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics at UBC ( and is a sought-after speaker and one of the key influencers in digital health innovation in Canada and around the world. INTERFACE Health is a platform and community that cares about innovators, the future of health and about making a difference in the world. The integrated multiplatform consists of an annual global competition, a professional and social network of 2,500 members and 600+ research, industry and government organizations and an annual digital health summit. MICHAEL GREEN President and Chief Executive Officer Canada Health Infoway Michael Green has an international reputation and proven track record of transforming health care through the use of digital health. As President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada Health Infoway, he works with Infoway s jurisdictional partners and other key stakeholders to accelerate the development and adoption of digital health in Canada, which will provide clinicians and patients with information they need to support safer care decisions and a more modern and sustainable health care system for all Canadians. Prior to his role at Infoway, Michael was President and CEO, Americas Region with Agfa Healthcare Inc. In this capacity, he led the transformation of radiology from film to digital in many jurisdictions across Canada and globally, making him an early visionary in the way digital health solutions can help make public health systems more sustainable and improve the patient experience. Michael has strong leadership and communications skills; he is a strategic thinker with a proven track record of bringing the best international research and innovation to Canada to advance the digital health agenda, create jobs and stimulate economic growth. Michael has a diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences from the London Metropolitan University and spent his early career working at King s College Hospital in the UK. In 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his contribution to the Canadian Health IT industry. He is a member of the ITAC (Information Technology of Canada) Health Board of Directors and served as Board Chair from TREVOR JAMIESON Virtual Care Lead, WIHV, Women s College Hospital and General Internal Medicine, St. Michael s Hospital Dr. Trevor Jamieson is a newly appointed general internist/hospitalist and clinician in quality and innovation (C- QI) with a background in computer science and current interests in clinical informatics. Trevor is interested in the big picture cases for informatics: quality improvement and virtual care are particular focuses. He's very interested in how informatics can be integrated into real-life workflows for both patients and clinicians to improve quality, and how innovation is promoted in the system at large. 4

5 Currently Trevor works on informatics projects at St Michael's relating to transitions of care, at the WCH Virtual Ward and the CCAC on projects relating to coordinated care for complex patients, and at WIHV on strategies for improving the uptake of Virtual Care in Ontario. PANEL SESSION WILLIAM FALK Managing Partner, Health Industries PricewaterhouseCoopers Mr. Will Falk is the managing partner and national leader of the Healthcare Services group at PwC. William has 20 years experience as a senior strategist and consultant in New York and Toronto advising top academic centers, governments, and public companies in health care. He began his career with APM Management Consultants (later CSC Healthcare) in New York where he joined the partnership in 1997 rising to senior partner in He joined Capgemini in 2003 returning to Canada to build the national practice which was acquired by Accenture, where Will became the Managing Partner for Health and Life Sciences and a member of the firm s global health and life sciences leadership team. Over his career Will has had several formal advisory roles within government including as External Advisor to the Minister for the Treasury Board Strategic Review of Health Canada (2008) and as an advisor to the PM and Minister of Health during the 2004 First Ministers Meeting on Health care. Will has a long and distinguished career as a board director and advisor. He has served on a wide variety of public, not-for-profit and private sector enterprises from early start-ups to billion-dollar publicly traded companies. Will has academic appointments at the University of Toronto as an adjunct professor at the Rotman School of Management and as an executive fellow in residence at the Mowat Centre for Policy Innovation. He is a University of Toronto graduate with a BSc and has an M.P.P.M. from Yale University. EDWARD BROWN Founder and Chief Executive Officer Ontario Telemedicine Network Dr. Edward Brown is a founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN), one of the largest and most active integrated telemedicine networks in the world. Edward has won numerous awards for his work in Telemedicine, including most recently, a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award for his contributions to health care in Canada. In 2010, he was chosen as one of 25 Living Transformational Canadians by a national media panel sponsored by the Globe and Mail, CTV and Le Presse. He currently sits on the board of OntarioMD and is the past President of the American Telemedicine Association. An emergency physician who studied mathematics and engineering before embarking on his medical career, Edward is a passionate advocate for telemedicine as a tool to improve access to care, quality of care and the sustainability of health care systems LINDA MOHRI Executive Director, Access and Transitions Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Ms. Linda Mohri is the Executive Director of the Access and Transitions Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. With Honours Bachelor of Arts and Master of Social degrees from the University of Toronto, Linda has a 20+ year history of providing clinical and administrative leadership in healthcare. In her current role, she has led a number of major initiatives focused on improving access to mental health care: the establishment of Access CAMH, which provides centralized intake for 20,000+ ambulatory referrals, and a telephone information line; and the redevelopment of the Gerald Sheff and Shanitha Kachan Emergency Department at CAMH, Ontario s only specialized mental health emergency department. 5

6 Linda is the lead for Telepsychiatry expansion at CAMH, and Co-Chair of ECHO Ontario Mental Health at CAMH and the University of Toronto, both of which focus on using technology to increase access to care for underserved areas of the province. As the lead for CAMH s ALC work, which included the creation of successful hospital/community partnerships resulting in the transition of 50+ long-stay ALC patients, Linda is also active in local and provincial ALC initiatives. WILLIAM CHARNETSKI Chief Health Innovation Strategist Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Mr. William Charnetski has been appointed the Chief Health Innovation Strategist for Ontario. William is an accomplished national and global executive who has worked in the highest levels of business, law and government. He has a track record of leading transformational change, developing organizations, leading people to realize their potential, fostering internal and external partnerships and collaboration, and delivering results. He has spent more than 10 years working on integrated health solutions in Canada and around the world in the rapidly changing global pharmaceutical industry. William most recently worked in the United Kingdom with AstraZeneca, one of the world's largest innovative pharmaceutical companies. He led the global government affairs and public policy function and had responsibilities for corporate social responsibility and regional communications. His team delivered tangible business results while enhancing health outcomes in many places around the world. Prior to that, William was Vice-President of Integrated Health Solutions, and General Counsel for AstraZeneca Canada. He was also a leader of the industry's work with the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and other Ontario ministries to help bring an integrated approach to adopting value-adding innovative pharmaceutical technologies to Ontario. William s work across the Canadian health care system has included building collaborative approaches to adopting innovative value-adding technologies across a variety of fields of study. In particular, for many years he has been a leader with the Ivey International Centre for Health Innovation at Western University - first as a member of its Advisory Council and now as a Health Innovator-in-Residence. William was an original member of the Steering Committee of the Centre for the Advancement of Health Innovation (within the Conference Board of Canada) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Health Economics in Edmonton. Previously a partner in the Toronto office of the law firm Torys LLP, William s practice included mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, securities law and public-private partnerships. He formed and was Head of the Privacy Law Group. William served as the first Chief of Staff to The Hon. William Graham, P.C., Q.C. when Mr. Graham was Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. He also was Senior Advisor to The Hon. Allan Rock, PC., Q.C. when Mr. Rock was Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of Canada. He has worked on a wide range of justice public policy issues, including those related to health care, human rights, constitutional law and criminal law. ZAYNA KHAYAT MaRS Health Lead and Director, MaRS EXCITE MaRS Discovery District Ms. Zayna Khayat is the Lead of MaRS Health and Director of MaRS EXCITE. She plays a critical role in helping MaRS clients to get their innovations adopted by healthcare systems in Ontario and around the world. Zayna was previously Director of Development at the Ivey International Centre for Health Innovation, where she is also currently an adjunct faculty member. Prior to her time at Ivey, Zayna had an 11-year career in strategy consulting in the global health and life sciences sector, first with the Boston Consulting Group s Toronto office from 2001 to 2010, and then as an associate principal with SECOR Consulting (acquired by KPMG in 2012). 6

7 Zayna is also an adjunct professor in the Health Sector Strategy stream at the University of Toronto s Rotman School of Management, as well as a senior advisor on Rotman s Health Leadership Advisory Board. She holds a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children, with a focus on insulin action and diabetes. She lives in Toronto with her husband and three children. 7
