1 Biography of candidates To be elected for a one-year term: Richard Bailey Richard Bailey is currently serving as Board Chair of the United Church of Canada and as board member of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy. He has also served as board member of the Aurora University ( ), as Board Chair of the Coalition of the National Voluntary Organization ( ). His extensive experience in the YMCA movement includes being President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toronto ( ), President and CEO of YMCA Canada ( ). Marilyn De Mara Marilyn is an assurance partner at KPMG, where she specializes in not-for-profit organizations. Her clients include charitable organizations, public and private foundations. She has been a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario since 1994, and is an active volunteer and board member for several organizations. Marilyn was first elected to the Board of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy in 1997 and currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer. Dale Godsoe Dale Godsoe is Vice-President External at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a partner in Maritime Broadcasting System as well as serving as a director of Halterm Inc. Her recent private sector involvement has included being director of Viacom Canada Inc., Hambros Bank, The Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Co. Ltd., where she chaired the Corporate Governance Committee. Dale is currently Chair of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy. In addition, she serves as vice-chair of The Women in Media Foundation, serves as a Director of Pier 21 National Advisory Committee, Symphony NS, Vision TV, Investment Dealers Association of Canada and has been appointed to sit on the Prime Minister s External Advisory Committee on Cities and Communities. Between 1987 and 1994 she chaired the Board of Governors of Mount Saint Vincent University and immediately post Mount, became a member of the Nova Scotia Council on Higher Education and The Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission. In
2 1997, in recognition of her contribution to education in the province, Mount Saint Vincent accorded her an Honourary Doctor of Humane Letters. Dale received her Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Masters of Education degrees from Dalhousie University. In 1997 she received a Honourary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Mount Saint Vincent University and became a member of the Order of Canada in Allan H. Lefever Allan Lefever is a judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta presiding primarily on criminal matters. Currently, he serves on the Board of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HFSC) as the Alberta representative. He has been involved in the charitable sector for over 25 years with the HSFC, in both Alberta and at the national level, serving as President of the Canadian Foundation for 2 years. He is also serving as a Director on the Board of the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations and the Health Charities Council of Canada. Faye Porter Faye Porter is National Vice President for Volunteer Development and Branch Support, Western Region with VON Canada, and National Director for The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation Respite Project. She has held senior management positions in home care, community care and acute care in Alberta, Québec and Nova Scotia. Faye has been a board member in various organizations, including the Continuing Care Forum of Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations, as well as past chair and treasurer of the Canadian Caregiver Coalition. She has played a leadership role in the voluntary sector as chair of the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations, and over the last two years has been co-chair of the transition process with the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy. She was recently awarded the Queen s Jubilee Medal for her commitment to caregiving and volunteers in the home care sector. Faye is a Registered Nurse and has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Alberta, and a Masters Degree in Health Services Administration from Dalhousie University. She is a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Services Executives.
3 Lucie Rémillard Lucie Rémillard is President and Executive Director of the Sainte-Justine Hospital Foundation. During the last 20 years, she held managerial positions in a variety of not-for-profit organizations, in social, education and health sectors. Lucie is a strong voice for the development of philanthropy in Canada and especially in Québec. She has served on a number of boards, committees and initiatives regrouping the sector representatives. To be elected for a two-year term: Ted Garrard Ted Garrard is Vice-President (External) at The University of Western Ontario, a position he has held since Prior to this, he spent 14 years at United Way of Greater Toronto including five years as Campaign Director. He currently serves as Board Chair for the United Way of London-Middlesex, as Vice- Chair for the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy, as a Director of United Way/Centraide Canada and as a member of Ketchum Canada's National Advisory Board. Ted has an M.A. in Political Science from York University. Marcel Lauzière Marcel Lauzière has been an advocate for social research for over 15 years. Prior to his appointment as President of the Canadian Council on Social Development, Mr. Lauzière was Special Advisor to the President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and inaugural Executive Director of the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Marcel is a member of the Voluntary Sector Forum, a Board member of the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations, and a Board member of the International Council on Social Welfare. Don McCreesh Don McCreesh is an active consultant in the corporate and voluntary sectors. His 30-year professional career in human resources includes leadership roles as the global head of Human Resources at Celestica, CIBC and Nortel Networks.
4 Don has been an active volunteer all his life, most recently with leadership roles in: the YMCA, at the local, national and world levels; the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy; Career Edge; The Learning Partnership; the United Ways of Greater Toronto and Peel; the IM/IT Table of the Voluntary Sector Initiative; and the Government On-Line Advisory Board at the federal level. John O Leary John O Leary is President of Frontier College since Under his direction, the College has launched several innovative and wide-reaching programs, including a national initiative to organize literacy programs with volunteers from every university and college campus in Canada. He has been involved in the Canadian literacy movement throughout his 28-year career as an educator. John is the co-founder of several national advocacy groups for literacy including the Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournaments, ABC Canada, and the Business Task Force on Literacy. He was a committee member of the Mr. Christie Children's Book Award, a member of the federal government's Task Force on Social Policy Reform, and a member of the National Crime Prevention Council. He has served as a board member of the Daily Bread Food and of the Cabbagetown Community Arts Centre and he has been a Big Brother. John is Past Chair of the Board for the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations and served on the Premier s Voluntary Roundtable in Ontario. He is a member of the Advisory Group on Literacy for the Ontario Ministry of Education. He is a board member of Fort York in Toronto. In 2002, he was awarded a Honourary Doctorate from Trent University. Raffath Sayeed Dr. Raffath Sayeed is a practicing physician in Lloydminster, Alberta/ Saskatchewan. He is a Past President of the Canadian Association for Community Living and a Past Chief Commissioner of the Alberta Human Rights Commission. He has held leadership positions within the field of medicine in the Lloydminster Hospital, The College of Physician and Surgeons and in the field of developmental disability. He is currently an elected School Trustee in his fourth term on the Lloydminster Public School Division and a Director on the Roeher Institute. He has been on the board of the Coalition of the National Voluntary Organization since Wenda Yenson Wenda Yenson is currently a partner at Dickson MacGregor Appell LLP and concentrates her practice in wills, estates and trusts, including charitable and non-profit organizations. Previously, Wenda was a partner at Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP for twenty years.
5 Wenda is active in the community and currently is Vice-Chair of the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations ( NVO ) and a member of the Board of Directors of Innoversity, a member of the Board of Advisory Governors of the YMCA of Greater Toronto and Co-Chair of its Capital Campaign (Family Division). Wenda is also a member of the Joint Executive Committees of NVO and the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy and the Financial Development Committee of Altruvest. Wenda has previously been Chair of the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Toronto, Vice-Chair of YMCA Canada, a member of the Scarborough General Hospital Financial Development Committee, a member of the Mon Sheong Foundation, a member of the Grants Committee of the Toronto Community Foundation; and a member of the Mediation Institute of Ontario. She has her B.A. in Biology from the College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, New York, and her Law Degree from the University of Toronto. She was admitted to the Ontario Bar in To be elected for a three-year term: Mayann E. Francis Mayann E. Francis has been the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission since August She served as Ombudsman for the Province of Nova Scotia from December 2000 to December 2003, the first woman to be appointed to that post. Prior to taking on these roles, she served as an Assistant Deputy Minister at the Ontario Women s Directorate and for the Ontario Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs. Mayann is a past member of the national board for the United Way/Centraide Canada, the Mascoll Foundation and other community initiatives both in Canada and abroad. In September 2002, she was appointed to the General Council of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. In 2000, she received a Harry Jerome Award recognizing her excellence in management and leadership in a professional role. In June 2001 she received an award from the Multicultural Education Council of Nova Scotia, for exemplary contribution and commitment to improvements in the area of race relations. Her most recent appointment was to the Board of Voluntary Planning, which undertakes policy research in a number of fields to encourage the social and economic development of Nova Scotia. In October 2002, she received a Golden Jubilee Medal at a ceremony in Halifax. Mayann received her medal in recognition of her contributions to Canadian society through her public service, volunteer and community activities. Mayann contributes a regular monthly column to the Chronicle Herald newspaper in Halifax. She holds a Masters in Public Administration from New York University, a certificate in Equal Opportunities Studies from Cornell University and a Bachelor of Arts
6 from Saint Mary s University. She is a native of Sydney s Whitney Pier, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Punch Jackson Punch is currently responsible for the Libraries, Community & Voluntary Sector Services Branch of Alberta Community Development. His responsibilities include the Wild Rose Foundation, an Alberta government agency that funds volunteer, non-profit organizations, promotes and supports the use of volunteers, and encourages charitable, philanthropic, humanitarian, and other public-spirited work. Punch has worked in the Voluntary Sector, Private Sector and Public Sector, including serving as the Executive Director for Camping and Outdoor Education of the YMCA of Winnipeg from 1969 to His private sector experiences include operating his own consulting firm, where the primary focus was on the integration of the disabled into recreation services and outdoor recreation. His public sector experiences have been at the management level in areas including volunteer development, leadership development, outdoor recreation, community recreation, sport development, coaching, active living, youth development and public libraries. Punch s volunteer experience includes coaching soccer, serving on church committees and acting as chairperson for a School Council. He has also sat on the national boards for the Skills Program and Media Awareness. Punch has a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from North Dakota State University and a Masters in Recreation Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. He received the President s Award from the Library Association of Alberta in 2000 for his outstanding contribution to library development in Alberta. He has been married for 32 years, and has three children and one grandson. Damon Johnston Damon Johnston is member of the Fort William First Nation, Thunder Bay, Ontario. He graduated in Administrative Management from Confederation College of Applied Arts and Technology, Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1970, and served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1966 to Damon is currently employed as a Community Resource Co-ordinator, Aboriginal Community, in the Community Services Department of the City of Winnipeg.
7 At present, Damon is also involved in several Volunteer boards serving in different capacities, including as: Past President, Board of Directors, Aboriginal Centre of Winnipeg President, Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development Chair, National Aboriginal Voluntary Organization Member, Voluntary Sector Forum, National Voluntary Sector Initiative Vanessa Reid Vanessa Reid is currently the Executive Director of Santropol Roulant, an award-winning community organization in Montreal whose unconventional model, an intergenerational meals-on-wheels program, engages young people in the community through volunteerism and skills development while providing an essential health service to seniors and people living with a loss of autonomy. Santropol Roulant is part of knowledge networks on social innovation and entrepreneurism, including the McGill-McConnell Consortium on Social Innovation. It hosted a visit from the G-8 Ministers of Employment and Labour in April 2002 to discuss the challenges facing voluntary organizations, and to see first-hand youth-driven grassroots solutions. Last year, Santropol Roulant was profiled in the Globe and Mail and won two provincial awards for intergenerationalism. Vanessa has a background in youth leadership training and was as an assistant to a Member of Parliament for two years in Ottawa. She has worked in international development in Guatemala on Fair Trade coffee; in India in advocacy and community mobilizing; with Aga Khan Foundation Canada and the United Way of Greater Toronto. Her experience with youth, community development and the voluntary sector also includes being on the Board of the Community Experience Initiative. CEI in an internship program that gives MBA and management students the opportunity to apply their skills to, and learn from, not-for-profit organizations and businesses that are on the vanguard of social change ( Vanessa was chosen as the Quebec representative for the Therese Casgrain Award, a National Volunteer Award, a committee member for the Arthur Kroeger Awards in Citizenship and Community Affairs and an advisor for the Millennium Scholarships Annual Think-Again National Conference for laureates. Vanessa has a B.A. in film and communications and a Masters degree in Architecture, both from McGill University. She directed and produced a documentary video in Gujarati and English about caste and non-formal education while in India. She has presented her research at architecture and historical conferences across North America. Vanessa lectures on organizational change, community development as well as urban and social systems.
8 Sandra Wilking Sandra Wilking is a Citizenship Judge in Vancouver on a part time basis, as well as an independent consultant providing strategic consultation in cultural and racial diversity as it relates to programs and services. She was formerly Senior Advisor of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada in the area of programme development. Sandra is currently a Director of the Laurier Institution (founded in 1989 by business and community leaders to advance and disseminate knowledge about the economic and social implications of Canadian diversity), the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and the United Way of the Lower Mainland, and a Member of the Capital Campaign Committee of Vancouver Cultural Centre and Honorary Patron for the BC Chamber Music Society. Formerly, she was a Director of C.T. Financial Services Inc. (Canada Trust), Canadian Race Relations Foundation, Vancouver Foundation and a Member of the AT&T Canada Inc. Canadian Advisory Council. Her other Community Directorships have included the Vancouver Children's Choir, Jack Webster Foundation, Rogers Cable 4 and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. (The United Chinese Community Enrichment Services Society). In 1988, Sandra became the first Chinese Canadian female to be elected to public office in British Columbia as Alderman of the City of Vancouver, a position she held until Born in South Africa, Sandra was educated in Hong Kong at Diocesan Girls' School and holds an Honours Degree in Sociology from Simon Fraser University. Sandra is married to mediator Wayne Mullins and they have a daughter, Alexandra. Dick Wilson Dick Wilson is Advisor, Office of the President, EnCana Corporation, one of the world's largest independent oil and gas companies and among the top industrial companies in Canada. Dick attended Bishop's University (Bus Admin / Economics), Quebec, and has spent more than 35 years in the communications business in Alberta as city editor of one of Calgary's daily newspapers, as an employee communicator, and as leader of Public Affairs and Employee Communications functions. His industries have included petrochemical, coal, electric utility, advertising agency, communications technology, and oil and gas. Prior to assuming the leadership role as Vice-President, Public Affairs at the time of the merger of Alberta Energy Company and PanCanadian Energy to form EnCana, Dick developed the communications programs for Alberta Energy Company from 1986 until the April 2002 merger. He was appointed to his current position in June 2003, with additional responsibility for maintaining EnCana s Community Investment programs and serving others in a mentoring role.
9 Dick s community service includes Street Teams / Safe House Society (Chair); Manning Awards Foundation (Trustee); Alberta s Promise (Director); Recreation for Life Foundation (Director); AIESEC International Student Exchange Program (Advisor); and Youth Science Foundation (President s Advisory Committee) for the CanadaWide Science Fair.
