This will be my last report to you as President of the CWEA-San Diego Section. At our Annual Awards Banquet and Installation Ceremony on January 30th, we will be installing a new Board of Directors, including two new directors. The remaining Board members will be moving up one position and I will move to Past President. While I am sure I will keep involved with CWEA, I am pleased to be done with my Presidential year and thankful for all that I have gotten out of my six years on the Board of Directors. Our first event with the new Board will be to hold an annual planning meeting to schedule the events for the remainder of If you have ideas for tours or meeting topics that you would like to see, please send them to me or any of the other Board members. We are always looking for input on what the membership would find interesting. Continued on page 2 Kimberly Raye Eades passed away November 21, 2009 at home and in the comfort of her family. Anyone that crossed paths with Kimberly, witnessed her enthusiasm and energy. She threw herself into everything she did. She had a rare gift and warmth that drew people to her. You couldn t help but catch her enthusiasm, whatever the activity was and there were many. A native of Oklahoma, Kimberly graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Civil Engineering in Her studies included an emphasis in physics, environmental engineering, and botany. An avid pragmatic ecologist, she was active in Our Earth, assisting in the coordination of past Earth Day celebrations. Prior to moving to San Diego in 1999, Kimberly spent over two years in Costa Rica living her dream of travel and emersion in the Latino culture and language. She was fluent in Spanish and volunteered as a bilingual poll worker during local, state and federal elections. Her other community activities included the American Association of University Women Carlsbad-Oceanside-Vista Branch, serving as newsletter editor. She was active in CWEA within the San Diego Section and at the state level on the Southern Regional Committee and other committees. She was also active with the American Public Works Association and other organizations. Working with the Communications Task Force, she helped the CWEA Board make changes to the website and print publications. Her expertise in using electronic media was invaluable to the committee and she championed the revisions to the website to help our membership communicate better. Kimberly at the 2008 CWEA State Conference (From left to right Tish Berge, Kimberly Eades, Karen Falk, and Patricia Post) Within the Southern Regional Committee she traveled to meetings around Southern California region to help bring people together, solve problems facing CWEA and the region, and promote training events. 4 Kimberly Raye Eades - continued from front cover For two years she helped organize the Bill Fannon Memorial Golf Tournmanet. She always volunteered with a smile on her face. She never met a stranger, everyone was her friend. The CWEA community mourns her loss. She was the best example of a leader, she cared about people and she cared about the environment. She gave of herself unconditionally. We wish her family and friends comfort and strength during this time. Our sympathies, Connie Leonard Kimberly at the 2005 San Diego Section Annual Awards Banquet and Installation Ceremony with her husband Richard and friend Valerie Vian. 6 Sea World Tour December 9, 2009 On Wednesday, December 9, 2009, CWEA members gathered for an informative presentation and tour of the water and wastewater treatment systems at our local attraction, Sea World. Michael Tucker and Bubba Spritzer took the group on a tour of the facilities and shared treatment stories and facts from their 60 collective years at Sea World. Sea World s marine mammal water system is semi-open, with natural sea water pumped in from Mission Bay. This water is then filtered, disinfected, and distributed to the facilities for makeup water to the marine mammal facilities. Facility systems vary in size from 100 gallons to 6.7 million gallons, and all systems have sand filtration and some type of disinfection process. Sea World currently maintains 150 sand filters treating 13 million gallons of water. The backwash water from these filters is sent back to Mission Bay after traveling to one of the two wastewater treatment plants. Just like our members, Michael and Bubba provide an essential service to their organization and the marine mammal health depends upon clean water. The Sea World team treated our CWEA attendees to a special behind the scenes tour of the manatee exhibit, complete with the opportunity to feed these beautiful animals. Thanks to Sea World for having us and to our members for joining this fun event! Tish Berge, PE, Senior Project Manager RMC Water and Environment CWEA-SDS Bull Sheet Page 4

8 Wake up to Wastewater January 20, Camp Pendleton CWEA members are invited to take a tour of the Southern Region Tertiary Treatment Plant at Camp Pendleton. The Southern Region Tertiary Treatment Plant (SRTTP) at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base is designed to treat up to 5.0 MGD using Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR). Approximately 1.0 MGD is reclaimed for use on Camp Pendleton during the summer months. The SRTTP, designed by CDM, came online in August 2006 to treat wastewater from the Marine Corps Air Station. The sewage enters the treatment plant through a mechanical bar screen into a wetwell. Dry pit submersible pumps then pump the sewage through a grit collector, which is followed by the SBRs where it is treated for 320 min. The treated sewage then enters an equalization basin and is directed through disk filters and finally a chlorine contact basin (CCB). Solids from the sewage are diverted to an aerobic digester and then thickened and dewatered using a gravity belt and dewatering belt press. Hypochlorite is generated onsite using food grade salt. Date Wednesday, January 20, 2010 Schedule 8 :00 am to 8:30 am Continental Breakfast & Networking 8:30 am to 9:00 am Introductory Presentation 9:00 am to 10:30 am Guided Tour of SRTTP You can register for the tour at cwea.org/sd. 9 Seeking students! Current professionals or future water environment protectors!!! Whether you re a new student just starting your higher education or a returning student looking to enhance your professional knowledge and skills couldn t you use additional funding to help pay the costs of your education? The Kirk Brooks Memorial Water Environment Scholarship Fund is available to help you cover educational expenses while you pursue your academic efforts. The Program provides annual scholarships for individuals attending a College, University, Community College or Technical Trade School and pursuing a course of study related to the Water Environment Field. Over the past several years, more than 100 individuals have received scholarship awards to assist them in achieving their educational goals you too could be a recipient of a Kirk Brooks Memorial Water Environment Scholarship Award. Applications are due February 1, 2010, but don t wait until the last minute. Check out the application now and begin to secure your place on the list of worthy recipients of this scholarship. Each applicant needs a CWEA Member to sponsor their application. As a student, if you don t have a family CWEA Member who can sponsor you, or you are not a member yourself, you can contact a member of your local CWEA Section to find a sponsor, or contact the Scholarship Committee. The goal of the fund is to support those of you who dedicate your valuable time to improving your knowledge of the Water Environment Industry. On September 1st, applications will be available on the CWEA website at Kirtland Brooks Kirtland Kirt Brooks participation in and commitment to CWEA were focused on operator training and certification programs. Kirt believed that by improving the technical qualifications of operators and maintenance people, all would benefit. One of his major satisfactions was the development of what is now the Technical Certification Program. He was a key figure in encouraging the development of the program while on the board of governors and later its first paid staff to manage and process the tests although he probably donated more time than he got paid for. Later when the idea of a scholarship program was conceived, Kirt became a member of the adhoc committee to define its objectives and selection criteria. He saw the scholarship as a logical extension of CWEA s basic purpose of education of its members. For nearly thirty years, Kirt actively contributed his time, creativity and wisdom to CWEA. Several times, he declined the opportunity to be nominated to CWEA s presidency, wanting instead, to work behind the scenes to foster the goals of the organization and encourage others to embrace them by his example. He was so respected and loved that at the next Board of Governor s meeting following his passing, the Board unanimously voted to name the scholarship program after him. CWEA-SDS Bull Sheet Page 7
