These elements and the advent of big data came together recently to lead LinkedIn to rank our Accounting Department as 8th in the nation in terms of the career outcomes of our students. These career outcomes were evaluated on the basis of our students obtaining and keeping the most desirable employment opportunities in accounting. The Accounting Department, student Accounting Association, and our Career Center work closely with the recruiting firms to achieve excellent placement results. Our students make us proud. This year, Professor Yongtae Kim received the prestigious University Award for Recent Achievement in Scholarship. This award recognizes a faculty member whose scholarly or creative work over the previous five years at Santa Clara University represents a major contribution to a field of knowledge or to the arts. Professor Susan Parker rejoined our teaching faculty this year after serving as the Associate Dean of Curriculum for the Leavey School of Business. As Associate Dean she performed yeoman services on systematic assessment of learning and placed us in good stead for our upcoming maintenance of academic accreditation both for the Business School and the Accounting Department. To give her no rest, upon her return she assumed the role of Director of our CAAP program. The success of this program is such that we are now at capacity, and admitted 100 students into the program that began at the start of this school year. I could go on, but I do recognize the nature of these messages. I can speak for the department in thanking all those who support us. Be it in recruiting or providing seminar speakers, advice, or financial support, we can t do it without your help. We thank you all. Issue 26 / December 2014

3 FACULTY PROFILE - SIQI LI Siqi Li was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor of Accounting in She is the most recent faculty member in the Accounting Department to receive tenure and promotion. Siqi came to Santa Clara in 2008 after obtaining her Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Southern California. Born in China, Siqi decided to come to the U.S. to pursue graduate studies after finishing her B.A. in international finance. Her first stop in the U.S. was San Diego, where she spent two years earning her master s degree in the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) at UC San Diego. Later Siqi spent a couple months interning at Merrill Lynch as a financial analyst before deciding to get her doctoral degree in accounting. When asked why she chose to be a professor, she said, "The best part about being a professor is that the work is never boring and I get to constantly challenge myself. I can teach different classes, meet and interact with new students every year, and more importantly, take on interesting and exhilarating adventures in accounting research. Contrary to what people usually think, accounting research is not cut and dry; it is actually fun and dynamic. You get to ask relevant and important questions that matter to our economy and society, and then look for answers by applying rigorous and scientific methodologies. The collective results of accounting research help to inform decision makers such as standard setters, regulators, and corporations around the world. Being a college professor does not mean you can enjoy an easy life; quite the opposite, you have to work hard to excel at both research and teaching. But in the end, it is a truly exciting and rewarding profession. At Santa Clara, Siqi s primary teaching responsibility includes managerial accounting classes at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Siqi has been an active and productive researcher. Her scholarship focuses on the role of accounting information in global capital markets, corporate governance, and financial disclosure. Her research has been published in several leading journals including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and Contemporary Accounting Research. Externally, Siqi has been reviewing papers for many academic journals and she also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of International Accounting Research, a premier journal in the field of international accounting research. Siqi is married to Peng Wang, whom she met while studying at UC San Diego. They have a one and a half year old son and are now expecting a baby girl in March. In her spare time, Siqi enjoys jogging, playing poker, reading Michael Connelly s novels, and spending time with her family. Congratulations again to Siqi for her tenure and promotion, and best wishes to her as she continues her career at Santa Clara! accountingdept@scu.edu Issue 26 / December 14 Santa Clara University 3

4 Leavey School of Business Department of Accounting scu accounting association News The Santa Clara University Accounting Association (SCUAA) is a student group led by four junior and four senior officers who represent the interests of Santa Clara s Accounting and A&IS majors. They are responsible for organizing events that help prepare students for careers in accounting by introducing them to professionals from a range of firms and companies. Planning for the fall recruiting season began in April 2014 with the selection of Diana Ng, Kristi Ikeda, Tiffany Iskandar and Amanda Tam as Junior Officers. With firms increasingly recruiting students earlier and earlier in their undergraduate careers, all eight officers spent a great deal of time brainstorming how best to adapt the organization s program offerings to best prepare students. This fall the Accounting Association hosted two sets of Resume Critiques and Mock Interviews with representatives from KPMG, PwC, Deloitte and EY in addition to hosting the quarterly Accounting Career Panel in ACTG 20 with representatives from Armanino, Moss Adams, and Grant Thornton. Additionally, on September 30th, the Association hosted the 33rd annual Meet the Firms (MTF) night held again at the Villa Ragusa in Campbell, CA. This year s event was attended by over 170 professionals representing 35 firms. It was well attended by students, with over 150 undergraduate and CAAP students registered, with positive feedback once again from all the students. These events were targeted mainly towards junior and senior students in preparation for on-campus interviews for internships and full-time positions, which took place during the fourth and fifth weeks of fall quarter. To better prepare younger students for the externship recruiting cycle and for next year s fall recruiting, the Accounting Association will be moving its annual social forward, creating a new Winter Recruiting Kick-Off event and planning more workshops, resume critiques and mock interviews to ensure that sophomores are adequately informed and prepared. The Association also plans to solicit feedback from firm recruiters at the end of the fall recruiting season and incorporate this input into plans for the coming year. Over the coming quarters, the senior officers will be working to increase engagement among accounting students through more departmental socials, the introduction of an integrated website, and possibly accounting department t-shirts. The selection of junior officers for the academic year will occur at the end of the winter quarter. 5 scu accounting association Senior Officers Eric Angle I was born and raised in Aiea, Hawaii where I attended Saint Louis School. I chose to attend Santa Clara University because of its strong accounting program and the opportunities that it opens within the Silicon Valley area. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing, playing soccer, and spending time with the friends that I have made while at Santa Clara. During my senior year, I hope to travel in order to gain new perspectives and expose myself to new experiences. This past summer, I interned with Ernst & Young in their Assurance practice, and upon graduation I will begin as a full-time associate in September Ryan Chew A Bay Area native all my life, I attended Archbishop Mitty High School before coming to Santa Clara University to pursue a degree in Accounting and a Minor in Music. Santa Clara was a school close to my heart as it is my father s alma mater and many of the family friends I grew up with are Broncos as well. Santa Clara s business school, specifically the accounting department, drew me in with its outstanding professors and unequaled connections to the business world. Other than the Accounting Association I am a member of the SCU Pep Band, have participated in the Jazz Band and Jazz Combo, and spend plenty of my time enjoying the company of my friends on campus. This past summer I interned with KPMG at the Silicon Valley Office in their Audit practice. After graduation I will start as a full-time associate with KPMG in Fall Kevin Krautscheid Born and raised in the state of Oregon, I am a graduate of Centennial High School in Gresham, Oregon. In search of a Catholic university with a strong accounting program, I was drawn to the Silicon Valley and Santa Clara University to pursue a dual degree in Accounting and Economics with a minor in Political Science. An avid runner and hiker, I have enjoyed exploring the Bay Area on weekends in addition to being involved on campus as a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, CLC, the Contemplative Leadership and Sustainability Program (CLASP), and the Leavey Scholars and ACE leadership programs. This past summer I worked as an Assurance Intern at EY in San Jose and am currently a Fraud Analyst Intern at Cisco Systems. After graduation I will begin my career with EY as a full-time Assurance associate. Lydia Ku I was born and raised in San Jose, CA and attended Prospect High School. I entered Santa Clara knowing that I wanted to obtain a degree in Accounting. The school's strong accounting programs and its prime location were a few of the reasons I decided to come to SCU. I have really come to appreciate the school and how it has shaped me as a professional, but most importantly, how it has shaped me as a person. The various organizations that I am a part of have had people and faculty influence my life to help me become the person I am today. Aside from SCUAA I am a member of Barkada, Igwe, KSA, Delta Sigma Pi, and LEAD, in which I took up multiple leadership positions. I currently work at Polyvore, Inc. and am a Sunday school teacher for my church. This past summer I was a Core Assurance Intern at PwC at the San Jose Office and in September I will start as a full-time associate with PwC. accountingdept@scu.edu Issue 26 / December 14 Santa Clara University 5

6 Leavey School of Business Department of Accounting OUTSTANDING GRADUATES IN ACCOUNTING The Professor O. Robert Anderson Outstanding Student in Accounting Award was established in 1973, and is given in memory of Professor O. Robert Anderson, who taught accounting at the University. This annual award goes to the senior accounting major judged the most outstanding in scholarship, leadership, and service by the faculty. For the first time, this award was given to two seniors; Jennifer Elizabeth Krapf and Sarah Christine McClammy. Jenny Krapf grew up in Texas. Her college counselor recommended Santa Clara to her because of its size, and once she visited the campus, her decision was made. Originally a psychology major, Jenny took Accounting 11 and decided to transfer into the Business School and declare accounting, drawn not only by the relationships she had with her professors, but the fact that the job prospects for accounting majors were bright. While at SCU, Jenny was active in the University's Activities Programming Board, and volunteered at Ocala Middle School, while earning a 3.98 GPA. Following graduation, Jenny moved to Chicago to begin a career with PricewaterhouseCoopers. While she enjoys Chicago, Jenny said she still remembers the tight-knit community she found at Santa Clara, and maintains many of the relationships she made here. Sarah McClammy had a much shorter trip to Santa Clara, growing up in the Silicon Valley. She wanted to stay in the area, both for college and to start her career. Santa Clara s size, and the reputation of both the Business School and the accounting program drew her to the campus. That, and the fact that she is a second-generation Bronco. (Sarah indicated that her grandparents have been season ticket-holders for men's basketball for 38 years!) Sarah came to Santa Clara knowing from day one that she wanted to be an accounting major. Both her parents were auditors at Price Waterhouse, and they encouraged her to take an introductory accounting class at the local community college while she was still in high school. She found that she enjoyed the class, and decided that accounting would be a good career to pursue. However, Sarah found more to her academic experience than just classes, although she did earn a GPA. Minoring in creative writing, Sarah wrote a 65,000 word novel for her senior honors thesis, and has published poetry and fiction in the Santa Clara Review. Sarah has indicated that when looking back at Santa Clara, she will remember studying abroad in London, participating on and leading the SCU equestrian team, and of course writing that novel. Sarah has broken from her parents, starting work as a tax associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers San Jose. 6 The Accountant The Accountant is published annually by the Leavey School of Business Department of Accounting at Santa Clara University or accountingdept@scu.edu. 13 CAAP PROGRAM NEWS In August 2014, we celebrated the fourteenth anniversary of our Certificate of Advanced Accounting Proficiency (CAAP) program. The first cohort in Summer 2000 consisted of 20 students taking six accounting courses for three hours per day, each course lasting eight consecutive weekdays. Summer program enrollments have grown steadily over the years. We now offer eight courses in the summer, with each course lasting four hours per day over eight or nine days. Summer students enroll in either a morning or afternoon cohort. During the summer of 2014, 75 students took at least one class in the program and 59 of these students completed all the classes and earned certificates. This year also marks the eighth anniversary of our weekend CAAP Program. By 2007 the summer program had quadrupled in size and we were hearing from working professionals that they would appreciate access to a program that would allow them to attend classes while working full-time during the week. To meet this demand, we initiated an Academic Year Saturday CAAP program, running from September through June. Demand for the initial Saturday program was immediately strong, with a waiting list in the first year and no drop in summer program enrollments. Consequently, we have since added a Sunday program. For the academic year ending in June 2014, 92 students took at least one class and 51 students earned certificates through our weekend programs. This past year, we organized several workshops on resume building, interviewing techniques, attending networking and career fairs, and preparing for the CPA exam. In addition, Angie Boeltner (Assurance at McGladrey) presented a workshop on resume and interview preparation to our weekend students. The main extracurricular event we organize for CAAP students is the annual CAAP Summer Career Fair. This year s Summer Career Fair took place on July 18 in the common area of Lucas Hall on the SCU Campus from 1pm-4pm. On that day, 64 CAAP students met with representatives from 15 accounting firms. The firms attending this event included the following: A2Q2 Apercen s Armanino BDO Burr Pilger Mayer Deloitte EY Frank Rimerman + Co. Hood & Strong KPMG Moss Adams Petrinovich, Pugh & Co. PwC SingerLewak Standish Management In prior years, the career fair took place in August. This year s event took place in July to accommodate firms wanting to hire CAAP students for start dates beginning in September The number of CAAP students attending this event was somewhat smaller than in prior years because firms hired more of our Academic Year CAAP students before their June graduation than they had in any prior year. In September 2014, Susan Parker became the new Director of the CAAP Program. The previous director, Mike Calegari, had served as CAAP Director for three years. During Dr. Calegari s directorship, we increased the extracurricular offerings and improved the recruiting opportunities for our CAAP students. We also expanded the content of our accounting information systems course. Dr. Parker had previously served as CAAP Director from 2003 to 2007, so she brings both a fresh look and the benefits of prior experience to the program. We look forward to her leadership in the coming year. accountingdept@scu.edu Issue 26 / December 14 Santa Clara University 13
