3 SPEAKER PROFILEs Charlie Manzoni Q.C., 39 Essex Chambers As a qualified Mechanical and Electrical Engineer, Charles worked in the international development department of a multi-national blue chip industrial company for five years before qualifying as a lawyer and entering private practice. Charles s work involves mainly international litigation, arbitration and mediation across a broad spectrum of commercial work. He acts as counsel in the High Courts of London and Hong Kong, in international and domestic arbitrations, acts as a mediator and conciliator in cross border disputes and regularly sits as a sole arbitrator or as part of a three man tribunal. He has an expanding Sports law practice, and sits as an arbitrator with the Court of Arbitration for Sport He was appointed QC in London in 2009 and SC in Hong Kong in M. Besides acting as arbitrator in ad hoc and BANI arbitrations, he has acted as arbitrator, counsel and expert in international arbitrations. He has also acted as expert witness in courts in various countries. Mr Umar has participated and have been invited to speak at various seminars/ workshops on international arbitration in Indonesia and abroad. Mr. Umar is listed as an arbitrator in the Panel of Arbitrators/Conciliators at the International Center for Investment Disputes (ICSID), Washington D.C. and in the Panel of Arbitrators at the Asia-Pacific Regional Arbitration Group (APRAG) in Sydney. Before practicing law, he was a government official at the Ministry of Transport and Communications. He had been appointed as an Attache for Transport Communications and Maritime Affairs at the Indonesian Embassy in the Hague, Netherlands, Sectoral Adviser on Shipping, Ports, Multi-modal Transport and International Maritime Legislation at the Permanent Secretariat of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, and President Director of Pelni National Shipping Company and PT PA NN Ships Financing & Leasing Corporation. Mr. Umar published a few books and articles on maritime law and arbitration. Campbell Bridge S.C., Mediator and Arbitrator, 7 Wentworth Selborne Chambers Campbell Bridge SC is a Senior Counsel, Mediator and Arbitrator from 7 Wentworth Selborne Chambers in Sydney. He has been a Senior Counsel since Apart from appearing in numerous arbitrations and mediations for parties, he has been retained as mediator in several hundred Australian and international mediations held in Australia, Singapore and Indonesia in areas including mining, insurance, commercial law, construction law, public liability and medical and professional indemnity. He is the only non-indonesian accredited as both an Arbitrator and Mediator in Indonesia. He speaks frequently at international conferences on negotiation, culture and mediation of disputes in Australia and Asia. Campbell has a particular interest in Asia and Asian culture. He writes and photographs extensively on subjects concerning Asian culture, history and traditions for various culture and travel magazines such as Asian Geographic (Singapore). Karen Mills, Founding Member and International Legal Counsel, KarimSyah Law Firm Karen Mills, a founder of the KarimSyah Law Firm of Jakarta, has practiced in Indonesia for 30 years. A Chartered Arbitrator, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators ( CIArb ) and of the Singapore and Hong Kong Institutes, Ms. Mills founded and co-chairs the Indonesian Chapter of CIArb, is on the panel of arbitrators of most arbitral institutions in the region, including those in Indonesia, China. A graduate of New York University School of Law and member of the New York Bar, Ms. Mills s substantive fields of specialization include financing and restructuring, oil, gas, mining and energy matters, hotel and leisure management, insurance, maritime law, information technology and general crossborder investment and transactions. She frequently sits as arbitrator in all manner of commercial disputes, acts as lead counsel for the Indonesian government in investment disputes, and has published over 130 papers in international professional books and journals. He has appeared before various arbitral tribunals, as well as the High Court and Court of Appeal of Singapore. Doug Clark, Barrister, Gilt Chambers, Hong Kong Doug Clark has been practicing as a barrister in Hong Kong for 5 years. Prior to that he practiced in Shanghai for 11 years and was managing partner of international law firm Hogan Lovells Shanghai office and head of its IP practice in China as well as head of the firm s worldwide patents group. He has handled cases involving the licensing of Standard Essential Patents for over 15 years and has acted for both licensors and licensees. He has acted in a number of major SEP licensing disputes and recently acted for a client in relation to both and NDRC investigation and Anti- Monopoly Law lawsuit relating to licensing practices. Doug is the author of Patent Litigation in China and speaks Mandarin and Japanese. Eri Hertiawan, Senior Partner, Joint Head, Dispute Resolution & Litigation, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners Eri graduated with a bachelor of law degree, majoring in civil law, from Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung, in 1992, and in 2005 was awarded a master of laws degree by the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. He is licensed as an advocate by the Indonesian Bar Association (PERADI), of which he is a prominent member, and is certified as an Accredited Mediator by both the Pusat Mediasi Nasional (National Mediation Center/PMN) in Jakarta and the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution/CEDR (London) and Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbiter. Julian Cohen, Barrister and Arbitrator, Parkside Chambers Julian has nearly 25 years of specialist experience of heavyweight international commercial arbitration in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Europe. In addition to acting as counsel, he also acts sits regularly as an arbitrator. His areas of practice include a wide range of company and commercial disputes as well as construction and engineering arbitrations. Ilman Rakhmat, Partner, KarimSyah Law Firm Ilman Rakhmat, a Partner of KarimSyah Law Firm, is one of the upcoming arbitration lawyers in Indonesia. His legal practice of over ten years includes being a key member of the team which successfully won an UNCITRAL arbitration for the Indonesian Government and a SIAC arbitration for Indonesia s biggest state-owned company, and recently, an ICSID arbitration for the Indonesian Government against a claim from a British investor. He has been acting as counsel in commercial arbitrations conducted under the Rules of ICC, UNCITRAL, SIAC, ICSID, BANI and the Indonesian Sharia Arbitration Board. Mr. Rakhmat also acted as a secretary to a tribunal in an ICC case. He is one of the very few Indonesians admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. 4 SPEAKER PROFILEs Rob Palmer, Partner, Ashurst Rob Palmer is a Partner in Ashurst s dispute resolution team in Singapore. Having a particular focus on dispute resolution in international energy, construction and infrastructure projects, Rob is listed in legal directories as one of Singapore s leading arbitration and construction lawyers. He is also recommended for his expertise in Indonesia-related disputes. Rob has been based in Southeast Asia since 2003 and has lived throughout the region, including in Indonesia. During that time he has conducted arbitrations under the rules of all the major regional and international arbitral institutions including the SIAC, AAA, ICC, LCIA, KLRCA, TAI and BANI. Rob is qualified in New Zealand, New South Wales and England and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA). He is a member of the panel of arbitrators of the BANI Arbitration Centre, the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA), the Thailand Arbitration Centre (THAC), and the ACICA. Alonso Mayordomo Castilla, Senior International Case Counsel, Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration Alonso is presently the Senior International Case Counsel at the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He handles and manages case management portfolio of the KLRCA which includes arbitration, adjudication and domain name dispute resolution cases. He is a qualified lawyer with the Spanish Bar Association and also holds an LLM from IE Law School in Spain. He also holds a Diploma in Islamic Banking and International Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Prior to the KLRCA, he has worked and gained experience in various jurisdictions including Madrid, Malaga and Indonesia.
