David arrived as the meeting was starting, so he greeted everyone upon his arrival. Leading us in the pledge was Sam Morgan and Richard Hansen provided the invocation. Richard Hansen was the note taker. VISITING ROTARIANS No visitors today. AND GUESTS ANNOUNCEMENTS NO MEETING NEXT WEEK In Observance of Night at the Museum Our major fundraiser of the year is scheduled for Friday, April 22, All members are asked to provide at least two items for the Balloon Pop. The value of each item should be at least $20. These items should be given to Dominic. We have 15 items and we need 100. Members are also asked to provide one item for the silent auction. Today PP Marilee Monagan donated a live auction item valued at $400 and gave David a silent auction item from Sonja Cameron. Event Chair David Stone continued to encourage everyone to start contacting restaurants and wineries. The sooner, the better. February Board Meeting This month s board meeting will be on Tuesday, February 9th at 5:30 p.m. at the (STATE FARM) office of Jordan Backhaus, 4315 Elkhorn Blvd., Suite B in the Elkhorn Center. See page 6 for additional information and page 9 for official flyer. District 5180 Foundation Dinner w ill be held on Saturday, October 22nd at the Red lion Inn. Dominic has order form s for Rotary T- Shirts which have a new design. Community Service Jeff Donlevy reported w e w ill install a park bench in the newly renovated Butterfly Garden at Freedom Park in late March or early April. Club-Level Speech Contest PP Bob Spears reminded the Rotarians who will be helping with the Speech Contest that it will be at the next meeting on February 22. District Conference President Gene encouraged club members to consider attending the District Conference at the Berkeley Marina May 20-22, He announced the board transferred funds set aside for the President Elect to attend the Rotary International Convention to the account for the District Conference. These funds will be used to help offset some of the cost to attend the Conference. The money will be divided by the number of Rotarians who register for the Conference by 2/29/16. 4 THE HIGHLANDER Page 4 2/8/2016 FOUNDATION NEWS ANNUAL GIVING/PAUL HARRIS SUSTAINING FELLOWS We continue in our goal to have every Rotarian contribute at least $100 to The Rotary Foundation and strive to achieve the status of 100% EREY and 100% Paul Harris Sustaining Fellows for the second year in a row. To date, we have fourteen (14) paid Paul Harris Sustaining Fellows who have bonged the gong for $100. Each paid sustainer has received a special sticker for their badges. We re on our way to reaching our goal of being a 100% Paul Harris Sustaining Fellow Club. ROTARY FOUNDATION BENEFACTORS END POLIO NOW CAMPAIGN Our goal this year for Polio giving is $1,000. We continue to have our END POLIO NOW banks on the tables at our weekly meetings. We ask that you - BRING YOUR CHANGE FOR CHANGE. The END POLIO NOW campaign is one of Rotary International s top priorities this year. Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have extended their partnership during the critical endgame phase of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Thanks to this partnership our contributions are matched two for one $25 becomes $75. 6 THE HIGHLANDER Page 6 2/8/2016 DISTRICT NEWS District Assembly President Elect Dominic Mecklenburg announced District 5180 will host its Annual Training Assembly on Saturday, April 2nd from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Inderkum High School, 2500 New Market Drive, Sacramento (near Sleep Train Arena.) Registration is free and is open to all Rotarians especially those who will serve as directors, officers and committee members during the Rotary year. Registration and coffee will be held from 8:00 8:30 a.m. and the individual training sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided after the morning sessions. The afternoon session will conclude at 2:00 p.m. Please mark your calendars and advise PE Dominic of your availability. As soon as the actual class schedule is confirmed, PE Dominic will make it available to his team so they can plan accordingly. Any questions, contact PE Dominic. See attached flyer on page 9 for additional information. HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS WEEK S MEETING PP David Stone introduced today s speaker PE Dominic Mecklenburg. Dominic grew up in the Bay Area and attended U.C. Davis, where he graduated with degrees in both Economics and U.S. History. Dominic began his career in financial services by enrolling in the hottest trend around while in his junior year at U.C. Davis: He got an internship! It was with a small independent broker in Sacramento. After his internship, he stayed on part time working for this private company that was later purchased by Wells Fargo. During this time, Dominic also attended ITT Technical Institute for recreation and obtained a degree in Computer Network Systems Technology. Dominic transitioned to the retail world of banking in 1998 and completed 10 years with Wells Fargo before joining Umpqua Bank in Hired on his youngest son s birthday, Dominic celebrates 10 years w ith Umpqua Bank this September. In 2008, it was through a local community BBQ that Dominic was first introduced to Rotary. Dominic is a PHF, club treasurer, Past President & PE. He is also the local bank manager at the World s Greatest Bank, Umpqua Bank. In his presentation, Dominic gave us a little Banking 101 and some history about Umpqua Bank. When Dominic was young, he walked his red wagon all over the neighborhood and collected old newspapers as well as rode his bike to gather recyclables. From as far back as he could remember, he would often roll coins at the kitchen table with his Dad and they would take all this money down to the bank. It was at a young age that he learned about a passbook, making deposits and INTEREST! Yes, interest aka Free Money for keeping his deposits in the bank. Fast forward to today Dominic has been in banking for about 20 years. Maybe that was just meant to be. Banking has changed a LOT over the years. Some examples included: Technology, Paper to Paperless, Grocery Store banks, Mobile everything, E-this, E-that; Fraud, Identity theft, and an enormous amount of regulatory and compliance training. Established in 1953, Umpqua Bank opened its first office in Canyonville Oregon. Originally, this bank was established to help workers in the

7 THE HIGHLANDER Page 7 2/8/2016 timber & logging industry because there was no bank in town! Umpqua Bank was formed as a solution to provide convenience from six investors who got together to make this happen. From , a total of six locations opened in all. Today s current CEO, Ray Davis, took the helm in He has had one consistent vision surrounding growth: to remain a community bank at any size. Today Umpqua Bank is a preferred partner of the FDIC. After several mergers and strategic acquisitions, they are in five states, have 394 offices and are $22 billion STRONG. They are most well-known for the company s culture, the single greatest intangible asset across the entire footprint. Umpqua Bank also has several unique programs, like their Connect Program an internal Volunteer Network driven solely by the choice of each individual associate. Associates receive 40 annual hours of paid volunteer time to work with youth, education and community development organizations. Umpqua Bank is the largest community bank in the Sacramento area. In closing, Dominic shared the bank and Rotary are in alignment because it is the people involved that make the difference and like working with his staff, he enjoys very much working with his family in Rotary better known as the Foothill Highland Rotary Club. Dominic rem inded us that every bank has a checking account, a CD and can do a loan. Umpqua Bank is different because of what else it can and is able to do. It is different, better. Locally, Dominic supports Rotary by serving as a collection site for e- Waste recycling in the bank lobby. He has also assisted with Estate Sale promotions in the bank. The recent Rotarians-at-Work project, involving a sidewalk repair, came from an e-waste donation pickup from a bank customer. And, of course, have you ever seen another local bank manager BBQ in their parking lot? These were just a few examples given by Dominic to demonstrate that his position with the bank and his participation in Rotary coincide brilliantly, and together help the community prosper. PE Dominic Mecklenburg and President Gene As is our usual custom, President Gene presented Dominic w ith a gift in gratitude for his informative presentation. President Gene then asked us to stand, raise our glasses and join him in a toast to Rotary Around the World. The meeting was then adjourned.

THEY WILL ACCEPT ANY PIECE OF ELECTRONICS INCLUDING TV S, COMPUTERS, APPLIANCES, CORDS, KEYBOARDS, MICE AND EVEN POWER TOOLS. THE HEAVIER THE BETTER (WE GET PAID BY THE WEIGHT!) ANYTHING WITH A CORD IS ACCEPTABLE, AND THEY TAKE THE CORDS TOO. THEY SEPARATE AND RECYCLE THE PLASTIC, METAL EVERYTHING! IF YOU HAVE ITEMS TO DONATE, GIVE ME A CALL TO COORDINATE THE PICKUP.
