3 THE HIGHLANDER Page 3 3/31/2014 Night at the Museum LESS THEN ONE MONTH TO GO!!! Plans are moving swiftly for our fundraiser scheduled for Friday, April 25th at the CA Automobile Museum. To date, we have secured 13 restaurants and 21 wineries/breweries. W e are doing great on wineries/breweries but NEED MORE RESTAURANTS. Our original goal was 15 restaurants; but with the addition of several more wineries, it s a concern that we don t have more restaurants. PLEASE HELP!! If you have a special restaurant you would like featured at our event, please contact them to see if they would be interested in participating. Attached to the bulletin is a complete list of vendors. If you need additional promotional materials to solicit participation from restaurants and/or sponsors, replacements are available from either Mo or Richard Hansen. Just a reminder: All members are asked to provide at least two (2) Balloon Pop items. The value of each item should be at least $20. PP Dominic Mecklenburg is collecting those items at our weekly meetings. If you prefer to give money, Dominic can purchase item s on your behalf. WITH LESS THAN ONE MONTH TO GO, WE STILL NEED MORE ITEMS. LET S GET INTO FULL GEAR. BRING YOUR ITEMS TO NEXT WEEK S MEETING. SELL TICKETS! It appears ticket sales are slow. Please turn in any money for sold tickets to Dominic as soon as you can so we can get an accurate picture of how many tickets have been sold to date. 5 THE HIGHLANDER Page 5 3/31/2014 VOCATIONAL MINUTE President Patrick Magnani was born in San Francisco and grew up in Concord, CA. He graduated from De La Salle High School in Concord and came to Sacramento in 1999 to attend California State University, Sacramento where he earned a B.A. degree in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Business Administration. Upon graduation from CSUS in 2002, Patrick joined Enterprise Rent-A-Car as a Management Trainee. In 2004, he was promoted to Branch Manager where he successfully managed four different offices. He was with Enterprise for eight years and left in 2010 to embark on his new career with Edward Jones as a Financial Advisor. JOKES PP Maureen McBride shared a cute joke and won audience approval. She earned a fine-free pass. Keep those jokes coming! HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS WEEK S PROGRAM On June 3, 2014 Sacramento County residents will have the opportunity to elect a new District Attorney for the first time in 20 years. To help our members familiarize themselves with the candidates, we invited the candidates to visit our club. This week Anne Marie Schubert w as our guest. PP Marilee Monagan introduced Anne Marie. Anne Marie is a Sacr a m en to native. She graduated from Loretto High School and received her law degree from the University of San Francisco Law School in Since that time, she has served in the District Attorney's office. With 24 years of Law Enforcement Experience, Anne Marie is recognized as one of the state s top prosecutors. As a Deputy District Attorney, she has sent some of the area s most notorious and dangerous criminals murderers, rapists and child molesters to state prison. Anne Marie cu r r en tly serve s a s th e Supervising Deputy District Attorney overseeing the Special Assault and Child Abuse Unit. She has prosecuted over 100 jury trials including sexual assault, child abuse, domestic violence and murder cases. She started the Sacramento County District Attorney s Cold Case Homicide Unit in 2002 which has resulted in dozens of cold murders being charged, prosecuted and convicted. She started the nationally recognized Partners Against Chronic Truancy (PACT) program in Sacramento County to reduce truancy in our community.
6 THE HIGHLANDER Page 6 3/31/2014 Anne Marie e x p la in ed why she decided to run for District Attorney. She feels her quest stems from her roots here and from her desire to protect the future of our community. Annie Marie h a s w o r k ed clo sely w ith the current DA Jan Scully for over 20 years and Jan has given Anne Marie her full support. supervision instead of to state parole oversight. She feels it makes it tougher to return some criminals with violent histories to custody and to keep them there for more than a few months if they violate the terms of their release. It is an important issue facing Sacramento County. Ms. Schubert has been a Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) instructor for over 15 years in the areas of homicide and cold case prosecution. She was honored as Prosecutor of the Year in 2007 and has served as a member of the Sacramento County Child Death Review Team and as a board member of the California District Attorneys Association. Public safety matters to Anne Marie. She wants people to feel safe in their community. She feels that the community will thrive if the people feel safe. Reducing crime helps us feel safe. While some people deserve to go to prison for their crimes, it is also important to prevent crime in the first place. Treating drug problems and limiting truancy are a good start. The position of DA holds a lot of power and responsibility and she doesn t take it lightly. Anne Marie is c o n cer n e d a b o u t a component of the law that allows offenders with a history of serious and dangerous crimes to be released from prison and returned to county probation President Patrick and Anne Marie Following her remarks, Anne Marie thanked us for the opportunity to speak to our members. Then, President Patrick presented Anne Marie with a Rotary gift in gratitude for her informative presentation. As is our usual custom, President Patrick asked everyone to join him in a toast to Rotary around the World and the meeting was adjourned.
