3 NATIONAL र ष ट र य The percentage of Indian population with Hindi as their mother tongue has risen to 43.63% from 41.03% in 2001, according to data on language released on Tuesday as part of Census Bengali remains the second most spoken language while Marathi has replaced Telugu in third place. Sanskrit was the least spoken of the country's 22 scheduled languages. With just 24,821 persons listing it as their mother tongue, it was slotted below Bodo, Manipuri, Konkani and Dogri languages in terms of number of speakers.

4 NATIONAL र ष ट र य Among the unscheduled languages, around 2.6 lakh people listed English as their first spoken language in the 2011 census, of which 1.06 lakh were in Maharashtra. Tamil Nadu had the second highest number of people with English as their mother tongue, while Karnataka was a close third. Bhili/Bhilodi, spoken in Rajasthan, was the most spoken unscheduled language with 1.04 crore speakers, followed by Gondi with 29 lakh speakers.

5 NATIONAL र ष ट र य According to Census authorities, mother tongue is defined as the language spoken in childhood by the person's mother to the person or, where the mother has died in the person's infancy, the language mainly spoken in the person's household during childhood.

7 NATIONAL र ष ट र य The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) proposed a draft bill to repeal the University Grants Commission (UGC) and set up the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI). This move that aims to reform higher education in India. The Act entitled Higher Education Commission of India Act, 2018 (Repeal of University Grants Commission Act) revamps UGC Act, 1951 and its parent legislation completely. The HECI Act, 2018 is expected to be introduced in Parliament in the upcoming monsoon session.

9 NATIONAL र ष ट र य Shri J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare inaugurated the NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences) Digital Academy and addressed the first batch of professionals enrolled for undergoing courses in the fields of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Social Work. Shri Nadda also released the training modules and curricula for various training programmes to be undertaken at the NIMHANS Digital Academy.

11 NATIONAL र ष ट र य Venu Rajamony, India's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), voted against the draft decision at a special conference of the Organisation at The Hague, in the Netherlands. Rajamony said, it has been India's consistent position that the use of chemical weapons anywhere, at any time, by anybody, under any circumstances, cannot be justified. The conference was called by the UK, the US and the West to have discussions on upholding the global ban against the use of chemical weapons.

14 INTERNATIONAL अ तरर ष ट र य Pakistan has been placed on the grey list by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for failing to curb anti-terror financing despite its diplomatic efforts to avert the decision. The decision was taken at the global financial watchdog Financial Action Task Force s (FATF) plenary session in Paris where Finance Minister Shamshad Akhtar represented Pakistan. The placement on to grey list will hurt Pakistan s economy as well as its international standing. Pakistan remained on the FATF grey list from 2012 to The process began in February 2018 when FATF approved the nomination of Pakistan for monitoring under its International Cooperation Review Group (ICRG) commonly known as Grey List.

17 INTERNATIONAL अ तरर ष ट र य India ranked fourth in the list of top 10 target countries for Web Application Attacks as botdriven abuse and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks continued to rise from November 2017 till April this year, Cloud delivery network provider Akamai Technologies said. Registering over 2.8 crore attacks, India also ranked eighth globally in the list of Web Application Attack source countries. Russia, China and Indonesia occupied top three spots.

19 INTERNATIONAL अ तरर ष ट र य The United States has postponed the 2 plus 2 dialogue' with India scheduled to be held in Washington next week. US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo spoke to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and expressed his regret and deep disappointment for having to postpone the dialogue due to unavoidable reasons. Earlier this year, the dialogue had been postponed due to uncertainty over the confirmation of Michael Pompeo as new Secretary of State. Pompeo was later confirmed as Secretary of State in April 2018.

21 AGREEMENT समझ त French state-run power utility EDF and American conglomerate General Electric (GE) have signed strategic cooperation agreement with State-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) to build for construction of 6 EPR (European Pressurized Reactors) type nuclear reactors of capacity 1,650 megawatt (MW) each at Jaitapur nuclear plant in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra.

22 KEY FACTS This strategic cooperation agreement is for long term partnership for construction of conventional island on each of 6 reactor units of Jaitapur nuclear plant. GE Power will design conventional island for the plant and supply its main components. EDF will supply EPR technology and will be responsible for building and coordinating industrial partners for this project. It will be responsible for engineering integration covering entire project (nuclear island, conventional island and auxiliary systems) and will provide all the requisite input data.

24 AGREEMENT समझ त Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) has inked a pact with South Korean firm NANO Co Ltd for design and manufacture of emission controlling devices for coal-based power plants. The Technology Collaboration Agreement (TCA) with NANO Co is for design and manufacture of SCR Catalysts for De-NOx application in coal-fired plants. The pact will enable BHEL to enhance its offerings for emission control systems (De-NOx applications).

27 AGREEMENT समझ त NITI Aayog s Women Entrepreneurs Platform has signed five Statements of Intent (SoIs) with financial institutions and social organisations to provide assistance to women entrepreneurs and address the finance-related challenges faced by them. The SoIs were inked with Shri Mahila Sewa Sahakari Bank Limited, Indiabulls Housing Finance Limited, SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited, Sreemanta Sankar Mission and the Self Employed Women s Association (SEWA). Through its partner organisations, the WEP aims to create opportunities and support women to help them realise their entrepreneurial aspirations, scale up innovative initiatives, and chalk out sustainable and long-term strategies for their businesses.

32 BUSINESS व य प र The Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) announced that it has extended $10 million worth of line of credit (LOC) to Seychelles. This is for healthcare and procurement of goods and projects. It is the first tranche of the $50 million sanctioned by the Exim Bank to the country. With this agreement for $10 million, Exim Bank has extended two LOCs to Seychelles, taking the total value to $28 million.

The 27-year-old Johnson, representing Kerala, clocked one minute and seconds to clinch the gold and to better the earlier record of 1:45.77 in the name of Sriram set during the 1976 Olympic Games.
