3 NATIONAL र ष ट The government has decided to sharply increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Kharif crops, as it responds to concerns about distress in the country s farm economy despite two years of strong monsoons. The MSP for common variety paddy, the most important Kharif crop, will be raised by Rs 200 over last year s Rs 1,550 per quintal. That works out at 13% increase for the financial year ended March 2019 compared to a 5.4% increase in FY18.

6 NATIONAL र ष ट Union minister of chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar announced that the country s first e-waste recycling unit will come up in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The unit, to be set up by the ministry, is likely to be ready in four months, and is in keeping with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan drive. A 2016 study by Assocham and KPMG ranked India among the top five countries in e-waste generation, with an estimated 1.85 million tonnes generated annually.

7 NATIONAL र ष ट According to the study, computers comprised 70% of the total e-waste and telecommunication equipment accounted for 12%. Bengaluru ranked third after Mumbai and Delhi and generated nearly 92,000 tonnes of e- waste annually.

11 NATIONAL र ष ट NITI Aayog, in collaboration with various ministries and industry partners, is organising MOVE: Global Mobility Summit in New Delhi in September This Summit will help drive Government s goals for vehicle electrification, renewable energy integration and job growth and also speed up India s transition to a clean energy economy. PM Narendra Modi will be inaugurating the Summit, which will be the first Global Mobility Summit of its kind, with over 1,200 expected participants from across the world. The Summit will constitute three designated components The Conclave, the Expo and the Featured Events.

14 NATIONAL र ष ट The Chief Election Commissioner Shri. O.P. Rawat, along with the Election Commissioners Shri Sunil Arora and Shri Ashok Lavasa launched a mobile app, called Cvigil, for citizens to report any violation of the model code of conduct during elections. cvigil" is a user-friendly and easy to operate Android application. It will be operational only where elections are announced. However, the beta version of the app will be made available for the public and election staff to download so that they can acquaint themselves with its features and also try sending dummy data.

15 NATIONAL र ष ट Upon successful completion of the trial that is underway, the application will be made available for general use by all, right from the forthcoming Assembly elections in the States of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Rajasthan. The practical use of the app during the four-state Assembly polls will also serve as a pilot initiative before it is put to extensive use during the next Lok Sabha General Elections.

17 NATIONAL र ष ट The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) launched its, in-house developed, singleumbrella e-marketing system named Khadi Institution Management and Information System (KIMIS) in New Delhi. The system can be accessed from anywhere in the country for the sale and purchase of Khadi and Village Industries products. This software will give real-time data of sales and will also give the updated status of stocks of khadi bhawans and godowns, allowing better planning and control of inventory of the KVIC.

20 INTERNATIONAL अ तरर ष ट Uttam Dhillon, an Indian-American top White House lawyer, has been appointed as the new head of the crucial Drug Enforcement Agency that combats the smuggling and use of narcotics in the US. Dhillon replaces Robert Patterson, who has retired after 30 years of service. Dhillon, who till recently worked in the White House as deputy counsel and deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, took up the role of Acting Director of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

22 APPOINTMENT नय क तय United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Major General José Eladio Alcain of Uruguayan Army as Head of Mission and Chief Military Observer for UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). He will succeed Major General Per Gustaf Lodin of Sweden, who completed his two-year assignment.

23 UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan UNMOGIP has been established by UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution and started its operations in It has been tasked with monitoring the ceasefire line between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir. UNMOGIP has 44 military observers, 25 international civilian personnel from 10 countries and 47 local civilian staff. Mandate: UNMOGIP s military observers conduct field tasks along LoC. As part of 1949 Karachi Agreement, it conducts investigations into alleged ceasefire violation complaints, which two parties (India and Pakistan) can submit to it. Its findings of investigations are shared with UN Secretary- General and summary of investigations with two parties.

25 APPOINTMENT नय क तय Payments Council of India (PCI) has appointed Vishwas Patel, Director at Infibeam Avenues as its new Chairman. He will take over from Naveen Surya, who has been elevated to post of Chairman Emeritus. He has been associated with PCI since its inception in 2013 and was serving as PCI s co- Chairman. PCI also has appointed Loney Antony, Managing Director, Hitachi Payment Services, as its new co- Chairman.

26 ABOUT PAYMENTS COUNCIL OF INDIA (PCI) PCI is an apex non-governmental body representing companies in payments and settlement system. It was formed in 2013 under aegis of IAMAI (Internet and Mobile Association of India) to cater needs of digitalpayment industryin India. It was formed for representing various regulated nonbanking payment industry players and to help resolve various industry level issues and barriers in payments and settlement system. PCI works closely with regulators i.e. RBI, Finance Ministry and any similar government, departments, bodies or institutions to make India a less cash society.

28 BANKING ब क ग The Reserve Bank of India licensed Bank of China to operate in India. This decision comes as part of the commitment made by PM Modi to the Chinese leadership. Bank of China will now have operating offices in India. This will be the second Chinese bank to be operating in the country. As on 1 January, 2018 Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd was operating in India along with 45 other foreign banks. The United Kingdom s Standard Chartered has the highest, 100 branches in India as of now.

31 OTHER NEWS अन सम च र The Supreme Court refused to put a stay on the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) circular prohibiting banks and financial institutions from dealing in virtual currencies, thus upholding the ban on the virtual currencies such as Bitcoin. With this ruling, all virtual currency transactions through banks would be blocked with effect from July 6, 2018, thus, resulting in a ban.

These currencies operate independently and are immune from government interference or manipulation. The decentralised control of each cryptocurrency works through a blockchain, which is a public transaction database, functioning as a distributed ledger. Bitcoin, created in 2009, was the first decentralised cryptocurrency. Since then, over 1800 cryptocurrencies have been created.

34 NEWSFLASH Rajasthan approves 1 percent reservation for Gujjars The Rajasthan government announced 1 percent reservation for five communities Gujjar, Banjara, Gadia-Lohar, Raika, and Gadariya under the Most Backward Classes (MBC) category. The move comes after Gujjar leaders threatened to launch protests during PM Narendra Modi s upcoming Jaipur visit. The Gujjars were seeking 5 percent reservation within OBC quota.
