1 HISPANAS ORGANIZED for POLITICAL EQUALITY 29th Anniversary AWARDS DINNER DECEMBER 6, 2018 MILLENNIUM BILTMORE HOTEL Alma Hernández Sonia Nazario Executive Director Pulitzer Prize-Winning SEIU California Journalist & Author RECEPTION 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM DINNER 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM UNDERWRITER SPONSOR
2 RAY OF HONOREE Alma Hernández Executive Director SEIU California Alma Hernández is the Executive Director for SEIU California, an organization dedicated to electing candidates and passing policies that benefit SEIU s 700,000 members and their families in California. SEIU represents janitors, home care workers, social workers, professors, school workers, health care workers, and city, county, and state workers. It is the largest labor union in the state and has been a powerful political voice in California for working people. Ms. Hernández is the first Latina to occupy the role of Executive Director. Ms. Hernández life path is truly a story of the California Dream. Her parents immigrated to California from Mexico in search of a better future for themselves and their family and worked in the fields of Central California before finding other work in the Central Valley s agricultural sector. In addition to playing in the fields as her parents worked, Ms. Hernandez fondly recalls learning the art of negotiation with her mother as they set up shop on the weekends in the Central Valley s swap meets. From an early age, she was fascinated with politics and government and immediately after college, she spent five years as a staff person in the California Legislature. Since then, she has worked as a lobbyist in Sacramento and a manager on numerous California campaigns. She joined SEIU California in 2010 and is inspired on behalf of her parents and family to further the mission of the union to provide dignity and a voice for working people. Prior to her appointment as Executive Director, she served the organization as Political Director, building the organization's field capacity, running independent expenditure campaigns, and helping SEIU California lead the state in building the political power of the new California majority: Latino, African American, and API voters. SPIRIT OF HONOREE Sonia Nazario Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist & Author Sonia Nazario is an award-winning journalist whose stories have tackled some of this country s most intractable problems -- hunger, drug addiction, immigration -- and have won some of the most prestigious journalism and book awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. She is best known for "Enrique's Journey," her story of a Honduran boy s struggle to find his mother in the U.S. Published as a series in the Los Angeles Times, "Enrique's Journey" won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in It was turned into a book by Random House and became a national bestseller. Her recent humanitarian efforts to get lawyers for unaccompanied migrant children led to her selection as the 2015 Don and Arvonne Fraser Human Rights Award recipient by the Advocates for Human Rights. She also was named a 2015 Champion of Children by First Focus and a 2015 Golden Door award winner by HIAS Pennsylvania. In 2016, the American Immigration Council gave her the American Heritage Award. Also in 2016, the Houston Peace & Justice Center honored her with their National Peacemaker Award. Nazario, who grew up in Kansas and in Argentina, has written extensively from Latin America and about Latinos in the United States. She has been named among the most influential Latinos by Hispanic Business Magazine and a trendsetter by Hispanic Magazine. In 2012 Columbia Journalism Review named Nazario among 40 women who changed the media business in the past 40. In 2018, Nazario was named a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. She is now at work on her second book.
