4 Recent Club events Pan-Singapore Interact Club Conference Panel of Rotarians (from left) YSC Director Dr Hoh Sek A group photo of all the participants at the conference Tien, VP Hassan Moosa,& Rtn Uttam Kripalani The Interact Coordinating Committee (ICC) organized a mini-conference on 21 November Held at Hwa Chong Institution, it was attended by 60 Interactors from 11 Clubs - Hwa Chong, ACSI, Bt Gombak Eagles, Anderson Junior College (JC), Raffles Institution, Evergreen Secondary, Stamford American International School, Global Indian International School, ACJC, National JC and Yishun JC Interact Clubs. It started with sharing of service projects by the Interact Clubs, followed by a panel discussion of issues raised by the Interactors. The issues were very interesting and diverse, ranging from most memorable service projects to animal welfare! The 3 Panelists were Rotarians Uttam Kripalani, Vice President Hassan Moosa and Youth Service Director Dr Hoh Sek Tien. Overall, everyone had an enjoyable time. Fellowship Guards At The Taj Play Guests and members at the Singapore Repertory Theatre on Video Link Project Clean Water Dear Friends, I am pleased to attach a Video Report of our 31st Approved GG to provide clean water to 3 villages in East Java. Project was approved 5 April 2017 and we are doing the Final Report now. Our Partner Club is RC Surabaya Timur and the Rotaract Club of Surabaya Timur. From water source in the mountains to the villages estimated distance is 13.5 km. Many thanks to HM Mohan Vaswani for his efforts in pushing this project through despite many challenges faced by both our Club and RC Surabaya Timur in the approval and launch of the Project. 7 Last Week Last Week Report on Wednesday Meeting 28 November 2018 OPENING REMARKS Sergeant-at-Arms and first-time Grandfather Rtn Bertrand De Mil, opened the meeting and invited President Mark to take the Chair. President Mark congratulated Rtn Bertrand whose first grandson was born on 21 November, and advised members that Rtn Bertrand was expecting another two grandchildren (twins) in April 2019! President Mark warmly welcomed Speakers, Dr Lee Guo Rui, CEO/Founder of K2 Holdings Pte Ltd and Mr Jasper Ng from Ark. Rtn Bertrand WELCOME President Mark called upon Rtn Daniel Beyeler, whom he mentioned, just came back from the jungles of East Malaysia, to welcom guests and visiting Rotarians: Guests: Mr Mohamed Ahsan Dr Ganesh Ramalingam Mr Vinit Sarangdhar Visiting Rotarians: PPs Jennifer & David Henderson Otley Chevin, UK VP Oliko Christiana Abuja Municipal, Nigeria Rtn Daniel TOAST Toastmaster, Rtn Robert Craiu was pleased to introduce PP Jennifer Henderson who is in Singapore with her husband, David. They were members of Rotary Club of Chelsea before they moved to Yorkshire. Rtn Robert Craiu added that PPs Jennifer and David made it a point to sit at separate tables at Rotary meetings. PP Jennifer gave a brief history of her club, Rotary Club of Otley Chevin which was formed about 30 years ago by former members of the Round Table. She advised of her Club s difficulty in getting new members as well as their fundraising activities such as carolling during the festive holidays. He added that DGND Dolly would be the first lady District Governor for District PROPOSAL: UPFRONT COLLECTION FOR WEEKLY MEETING COSTS President Mark reminded members of the proposal to collect in advance for meeting costs and there were on-going discussions and refinements to the proposal. Information on the proposal was circulated to members on 26 November A decision on this issue will be voted upon at the Club s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 19 December evening meeting at The Tanglin Club. NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENT (RY 2020/2021) President Mark announced that the notice of nominations was circulated, for nominations for the position of President for Rotary Year 2020/2021. He added that nominations closed on 28 November and was pleased to advise that a nomination was received for Rtn Dinesh Sharma. Formal adoption of the nomination for the President (RY 2020/2021) and for the upcoming Board of Directors (RY ) will take place at the Club s Annual General Meeting on 19 December 2018 (evening meeting). Before the close of the meeting, President Mark invited Rtn Dinesh to address the Club. Rtn Dinesh advised that he was persuaded to serve as President by PP Tapan Rao, Rtn Dinesh and he thanked the Nominating Committee for the honour and privilege to do so. 9 Last Week Speaker: Topic: Dr Lee Guo Rui and Mr Jasper Ng Early Cancer Detection and Introducing ARK and pipeline of early screening cancer detection tests President Mark called upon Rtn Dr Hans Schniewind to introduce the joint speakers, Dr Lee Guo Rui and Mr Jasper Ng. Dr Lee graduated from the National University of Singapore School of Medicine in He developed an interest in applying the latest diagnostic technology to medical practices during his residency training in Diagnostic Radiology. Rtn Dr Hans Schniewind As the founder of K2 Medical Group, he has created an infrastructure of clinics with mobile health screening capabilities, making quality healthcare accessible and affordable for all. Speakers Dr Lee Guo Rui (left) and Mr Jasper Ng (right) He envisions a world without preventable dreaded diseases and hopes to achieve it through early disease detection and treatment. Mr Jasper Ng has launched various cancer targeted therapies while working in Pharma companies and has focused his past 6 years in the use of technologies for targeted therapy selection in Sales and Marketing. From left: President Mark, Dr Lee, Mr Ng & Rtn Dr Suresh Mahtani Dr Lee presented his portion of the talk with the emphasis of early cancer detection, adding that most patients found cancer to be the biggest worry. However, Dr Lee noted that cancer could be detected early for better outcomes. He gave an overview of the health screening services available and highlighted the various cancer risk factors, particularly that of gastric cancer. He also highlighted the methods to screen and diagnose cancer. Next, Mr Jasper Ng introduced his company and its provision of a cancer detection blook test named Gastroclear, that would be affordable, accurate and actionable. President Mark called upon Rtn Dr Suresh Mahtani who warmly thanked both Dr Lee and Mr Ng for their very enlightening talk. 8 C r o s s r o a d s

11 The Four-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do: The Guide to Daily Living Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the Precepts of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them: First: Have I spent some time in self-examination? Second: Have I spent quality time with my family? Third: Have I given my best to my work? Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far? The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.
