3 2018 Aerospace for All The Aeronautical Society of South Africa (AeSSA) welcomes you to our 2018 annual conference here at Hoogeind Manor in Somerset West. It s great to be down south this year! The theme for this year s conference, Aerospace for All, was carefully chosen to reflect the increasing importance that aeronautics and space play in every facet of our lives. We see this in industry where aerospace is recognised as a significant economic multiplier and creates multiple practitioner opportunities. We ve dubbed this sub-theme, Aerospace Jobs for All. Aerospace Institutions for All considers how aeronautics and space separately and in combination allow government to provide enhanced services for its citizens. An entrepreneurial perspective by which aeronautics and space become platforms for small and medium enterprises to deliver innovative products and services is part of Aerospace Business for All. And then we have Aerospace Research for All, which considers multiple academic opportunities in aerospace (including citizen science). I am delighted to welcome our invited speakers whose topics will, I believe, touch on some of these aspects; the topics of our various sessions align with and integrate these sub-themes. I am particularly excited that Dr Ken Davidian of the FAA will take on the role of opening keynote speakers and Master of Ceremonies for the event, as his ability to guide, identify and synthesise key aspects in terms of our main theme will be incredibly valuable. Our initiatives, the Young Professionals forum and our Women in Aerospace Breakfast, are becoming well-established side events. Busi Nkonki and Elizna Miles: you keep delivering amazing events every year! Thank you. In addition to this annual conference, the AeSSA has continued to focus on its lecture series and its growing outreach engagement. The momentum is growing, so watch the space for new and developments. 6 Keynote Speakers Dr Ken Davidian will deliver an address titled Aerospace for All...What does this really mean? Dr Ken Davidian spent 20 years working for NASA as an aerospace engineer and as a Prize Program Manager, five years in industry (X PRIZE Foundation and ISU), and 10 years as the Director of Research at the FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation in Washington, DC. Dr Davidian received a BS in Aerospace Engineering, an MS in Mechanical Engineering, and his PhD in Business Administration from UCT GSB. Captain Martin Louw will deliver an address titled Comair s Success Formula: How Comair Limited became southern Africa s leading airline through skill, culture and technology. Captain Louw started his career with the SA Air Force in January 1973, as a pupil pilot. He spent 22 years in the SAAF as a fighter pilot, flight instructor, staff officer and project officer for airborne weapons systems, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1994 he resigned from the SAAF and joined Kentron as international marketer and later IST as project manager. He joined Comair as a first officer in 1996 and has since served as Chief Training Captain and Fleet Captain on B727, Chief Pilot, Executive Manager: Flight Operations and Director: Operations since Lt Col (Ret) Musa Midnite Mbhokota will deliver an address, titled The dawn of the SAAF Gripen (from development to operations). Lt Col Mbhokota has over total military flying hours, of which hrs have been on Gripen. He served as an Operational Test and Evaluation Leader, Pilot Attack Instructor, Operations Officer, Gripen Squadron Commander (for six years) and Chief Fixed Wing Experimental Test Pilot. He is a graduate from the National Test Pilot School USA, a Qualified Aircraft Investigator (US Airforce), Qualified Flying Instructor (Swedish Airforce), and a Gripen solo-display pilot..

7 Dr Sias Mostert will deliver an address, titled Reflecting on 25 years of Commercialising Space Technology in South Africa. Dr Mostert is co-founder of the SCS Holdings. He started his career in 1988 at Stellenbosch University (SUN). He joined the Sunsat team in 1992 as the Development Manager on the Sunsat micro-satellite project. In 1999 he was a co-founder of SunSpace and Information Systems (Pty) Ltd. During this time, he led the development of the user requirements of the African Resource Management Constellation (ARMC). In 2008 he co-founded the SCS Holdings with Ferdi Herbst. He holds a B.Eng. in Electronic Engineering with Computer Science and a Ph.D. (both from SUN) and an Executive MBA from UCT. Mr Trevor Ralston will deliver the Alan Nurick Rotorcraft Lecture, titled Rooivalk Tailfeathers. Mr Ralston has been involved in the development of military helicopters since attending the Empire Test Pilots School in The Rooivalk Attack Helicopter holds treasured memories for him, having participated in the programme at Atlas Aviation (now Denel Aviation) from the concept stage, through first flight and development testing, to production testing and marketing. Officially retired, he is still active in the development of light armed helicopters at Paramount Advanced Technologies. Mr John Monk will deliver an address, History of the AeSSA Aerospace Challenge. Mr Monk joined the CSIR in 1984, where he has worked primarily in aeronautics. As a Principal Aeronautical Engineer and Research Group Leader, he managed the modelling and simulation and unmanned aircraft systems technologies, recently focusing more on the latter. He has been directly involved in the design and development of many unmanned aircraft, two manned aircraft (OVID/ACE and the CSIR Hummingbird), and the XH-1 helicopter technology demonstrator. He holds BSc and MSc degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand..

8 The objective of the Aeronautical Society of South Africa s Annual Conference is to maximise post-graduate student and industry participation and we encourage authors to submit full papers to the SAIMechE R&D Journal specifications, due by end of January The Aeronautical Society of South Africa (AeSSA) is a fully-fledged Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RaeS).
