2 OVERVIEW Harnessing the Extractive Industries for Development in sub-sharan Africa 2018 (EX4DEV18) is a student-led, interdisciplinary workshop and networking event held over one day at Surrey Business School, University of Surrey. The aim is to enable postgraduate researchers to meet practitioners from the private sector, development consultancies, policymakers, and NGOs in order to network, enhance collaboration, and foster relationships between academia and industry. Building on the success of two previous workshops Ex4Dev16 and Ex4Dev17 this year focuses on challenging false perspectives in mining. This theme aims to deepen understanding of the role of the sector regarding development in the region and explore how mining can be a positive force for good. Following the workshop, all participants are invited to submit papers and shorter viewpoints for publication in a special section of the international academic journal Extractive Industries and Society (EXIS). The papers from Ex4Dev16 can be viewed here.
