1 HOT AIR 12 July 2018 New Rotary Year Kym s Catch Up Welcome to the new Rotary year High-Risers! We kicked off the year with our Changeover Dinner at Victoria Park last Friday. The fellowship was vibrant and our speaker, Will Stubbs, inspiring! Thank you to everyone who helped to make it a fabulous evening. Thinking about the year ahead has led me to also reflect on the year just passed, under Greg s leadership. We can celebrate many successes, and all be proud of what we have achieved. A few highlights from last Rotary year include: another successful art show run in conjunction with Stones Corner and Hamilton clubs. We raised $33k for AEIOU and $11k for our club. We also received a $30k grant, which we used to buy partitions; strong support for youth through RYLA, NYSF and YEP programs, as well as involvement in Rotaract mentoring evenings; support for the Rotary Foundation, with 44% of our members donating a total of USD $7300 to the Foundation. We also hosted a Polio movie night which attracted 100 movie goers and raised $750 (plus a $1500 matching grant) for Polio Plus; Our Wendy was inducted as District Governor; We enjoyed fellowship events throughout the year, including our 25-year anniversary breakfast, Riverfire at the Maritime Museum and Christmas celebrations; We continued to support many of our key projects, including St Judes, Shelterbox, St James, Albert Park Flexi School, The Maritime Museum, DIK and Clean Up Australia; For international projects, we continued our planning to bring Vascolynna to Australia for surgery and have started planning a club project to build a lunch area at Mamba school. We also donated school jumpers for all the children at Mamba. This year s theme is Be an Inspiration a phrase I am sure you will hear many times before the year is over. Looking at the list above, I believe we can say Continue to be an Inspiration! As we move forward into the next year with a number of projects already planned, I am excited about what we can achieved. Simon Sinek said Words may inspire but only action creates change. The 2018/19 Board Barb s Joke Corner My husband, a big-time sports fan, was watching a football game with our grandchildren. He had just turned 75 and was feeling a little wistful. 5 OUR LATEST PHF WILL STUBBS Will Stubbs was presented with a PHF at our Change over dinner. Will was our guest speaker and was truly inspirational. Despite being thrown out of University, in 2011 Will Stubbs co-founded the organisation, Spur Projects a non-profit that set out to achieve behavioural change to combat male suicide, the number one killer of men aged between 14 and 44. Still a driving force behind Spur, he has been an Australian representative G20 Young Entrepreneur Delegate, a Digital Brisbane Ambassador, and represented Australia at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos Switzerland in January this year PRESIDENT S AWARDS At the Changeover Dinner one of President Greg s last duties was to present awards to Ros Mumford, Lindsay Marshall, Bill Phillips and Angela Tillmanns in recognition for their contribution throughout the Rotary year. He still finds time to mentor start-ups and social enterprises including the Indigenous business accelerator Barayamal. Here he is pictured with his partner Grace. Russell congratulating Will

6 A PROUD BHR MOMENT Back in 2013, after a presentation by David Cansdale from Kangaroo Point Rotary Club about the Children Welfare Centre (CWC) at Nepal, Brisbane High Rise Club decided to sponsor a young boy called Man Kumar. His mother had recently died and his father had deserted him. Five years later, with our help, Man Kumar has grown into an accomplished young man who has just finished Year 10 at school. The results are out for Nepal's SEE, Secondary Education Exam for Every student must sit this exam when completing Grade 10 (tenth year of study) before they go onto Grade 11 and 12 (higher secondary or intermediate level). In March of this year Man Kumar along with 451,529 other students sat the SEE. The results are graded A+ down to D. A+ equates to %. Man Kumar s A+ was a very high A+ and he also topped his school Kingdom Star School. The Headmaster of Kingdom Star School visited CWC to congratulate him, and CWC for such a fine effort in supporting him and the other two students that completed their SEE. His official certificate will arrive in about 3 weeks. Man Kumar would like to study Science and go onto become a Civil Engineer. BHR has really made a difference to this young man s life. THE WWW of ROTARY SEBASTION S SUCCESS If Sebastion was in Australia he would likely be assessed as legally blind as he cannot see the blackboard sitting in the front row. In 2015 when BHR visited St Judes, they addressed this problem with a donation of an Ipad. Louise Arvier, who is a physiotherapist with Vision Australia, was able to load all the necessary applications and work with Sebastion so that he could take a photo of the board and zoom in as much as he needs. This has enabled him to achieve great results at school. Past President Greg has mentioned the story of the young women from South America who is in Brisbane hospital following a car accident now meet her parents, Germano and Sueli. Here they are enjoying the Brisbane winter on Margo s balcony. We are hoping they can join us for breakfast this week.

7 UPDATE FROM SIENA OUR EXCHANGE STUDENT IN DENMARK Soon after moving host family s I went on my three-week EuroTour (which I might add was the most adventurous, incredible and surreal three weeks of my exchange/life, thus far). We started our adventure in Berlin, where we visited a few moving war memorials and interesting tourist destinations. Following our short stay in Berlin, we travelled to Prague, visiting the Royal Palace, Hradchin, the Teyn Church, St Veits Cathedral and The Golden Street Zlata Ulica. We then continued through more beautiful landscapes into Austria, where we spent the next two nights in Vienna. We were fortunate enough to attend a Mozart themed orchestra performance together with an Austrian theme park. Our next adventures continued in Lido Di Jesolo, Italy, where we had an incredibly relaxing and recharging time spent by the beach. Lido was, without a doubt, my favourite time of the whole trip, as it was a space for us all to be genuinely appreciative and reflective about our trip/exchange. At this time I feltparticularly grateful for the beautiful connections that were fostered from such a short time on the trip, but most of all just how incredibly nourishing and enriching my exchange experience has already been. Note: All of this reflection was done whilst starfishing (floating on the water whilst holding hands with my beautiful friends. A term I am proud to coin as my own), under the deeply moving sunset. Whilst staying in Lido we had day trips to Venice and Verona, both incredible and both bucket-list-ticking (certainly not a phrase, however, it is now) destinations. From here we travelled to France, where we spent the day at Vers-Pont-Du- Gard and Avignon. From there we travelled to the astonishing Paris, where we spent 3 rainy yet charming days. Our days were filled with exploring; The Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame, the Sacre Coer, the Concorde Square, the Latin Quarter and the Centre Pompidou. After our surreal time in Paris, we continued on to Brussels, Belgium, to visit the iconic Manneken Pis and Grand-Place. To top off a wonderful trip we had our last day in Amsterdam, where we continued our sight-seeing and had a canal boat tour, we had a lovely day filled with exploring and an equal amount of reflecting and emotional chats in a beautiful cafe on the canal. I went through the lengthy process of sifting through all my photos and copious incredible experiences to create this monthly update. Of the many candidates these photos seemed to be the most moment- capturing and the mentioned experiencesfeltto be the most impactful. Thank you for your patience with my consistently late monthly reports, however, I am pleased to admit it is due to being preoccupied with so many enriching experiences and moments. A huge thank you is owed to you all at the Brisbane Highrise Club, as I am well- aware that without your support I would not be fortunate enough to be exposed to such incredible and eye-opening experiences. 8 MEET TIINA RAUTIO OUR NEXT EXCHANGE STUDENT Tiina arrives in Brisbane on Sunday 22 July She will be flying in from Singapore and once we know her flight details we will let you know, so you can be part of the welcome committee. Tiina comes from Oulu in Finland. Her date of birth is 26 September She is a keen horse rider and is looking forward to enjoying Brisbane s outdoor lifestyle and beach culture. She will be attending St James College and will be a regular at our meetings. Initially Tiina is staying with the Tillmanns for a few weeks to get settled and from 11 August she will be with Lindsay and Diane Marshall. Please make her feel welcome and involve her in any weekend activities that she may enjoy.
