The teacher and the student must be prepared. To make your plan happen, will need the following items: Lesson Plan Supply List for yourself and your students Equipment camera, SD card, external harddrive, tripods, lighting, etc.
Editing Software imovie and Adobe Pro Uploading to Vimeo and/or YouTube Below, you will find a special lesson on each area above. This will help us to specifically focus on one area at a time. Do not feel that you need to cover every lesson in one day. It is a lot of information to take in. Lesson 1 - Lesson Plans Lesson 1 Objective: Review lesson planning Learn how to prepare your students Lesson 1 Resources: In week 1, we did cover a lot on lesson planning because a lesson plan is often THE master plan! However, I wanted to touch on this again. There are a variety of lesson plan templates out there for you. The lesson plan templates can be found in the Classroom. When creating your lesson plans, you should always backward plan as discussed in week 1. Always begin by considering what your objective for your students will be. Then plan from there. In the classroom this week, there are two examples of completed lesson plans. In each of these lesson plans, you can see what the objective is, timeframe, materials or supplies needed, process, and follow-up. You want to be sure to have an opening, a process, and a closing. Introduce the students to what they will learn, share the process, and then close by sharing what you have taught. Also, having some type of application or follow-up is key! This holds the students accountable for applying their learning. The sooner students apply, the more likely they are to be successful and try again (which is what we want!) As you are creating your lesson plans, you want to write it out as if you are giving it to someone to teach your lesson. What is the objective? What materials do they need? What should they say
throughout the lesson as they are teaching? It is crucial that your plan be explicit so that you know exactly what to do as you are teaching it. This will ensure that you are well-preparing your students for the learning process. Okay, so you have your lesson plan ready. Now what!? It is time to think about the best way to deliver your lesson. Since I teach art courses online, the best delivery method for my lessons is via video, and/or PDFs. I provide my students with an overview of the lesson, a supply list, and videos. For some courses, I also provide a printable PDF support. Students really appreciate this extra support material. In lesson 2, we will focus on setting the stage for recording a video. Lesson 2 Setting the Stage Lesson 2 Objective: learn what cameras are available understand what an SD card is and how it is used learn the importance of using an external hard drive practice using white balance and focus settings on a camera understand the difference between a tripod and a light boom stick and the importance of using these in video lessons learn the importance of light in videos and what equipment is available to enhance your videos Lesson 2 Resources: How you set the stage for your videos is extremely important! We are going to discuss the equipment that you can be used, and how to set that equipment up. You do not need all of the items listed below, but they will make it easier for you to create good-quality videos that your students will appreciate and enjoy! Camera There are many different cameras to choose from. You can use a DSLR or a camcorder. Here is a picture of the camera that I use!
Tripods and Light Boom Stands I highly recommend using a tripod or a light boom stick, or both, to film your lesson. I use both! I use a tripod when I am filming on my easel. I use a light boom stick when I am filming on my table. You can see in the pictures below my own set up when filming. Both the tripod and light boom stick are adjustable which makes it easy to film at just about an angle you need!
Smartphone and Tablet Attachments: Some people also use their iphones and ipads to film. You can get attachments for them for the tripod and boom stand. Here are some examples! Camera Settings:
There are many settings to choose from on your camera. How to know what to use really comes from reading the manual and from experience. When filming, to begin you might just choose to use the auto settings. These settings will create a good video. However, understanding the settings and experimenting with them will help you to create better videos. The settings that you should choose, can depend on the room you are filming in. YouTube has some excellent videos on how to set up this type of camera as well as others. However, I have to say that settings will vary depending on where you are filming, your lighting, etc. So, I have found that while these tutorials are really helpful, I have been helped the most by trial and error, and friends with experience in filming! A great tutorial on YouTube can be found here: SD Card The SD card is a memory card and is what your movie will be stored on. I like to use a 32 or 64G card. I recommend you do the same. External Hard Drive
Videos take up a lot of space and can really slow down your computer. Because of this I highly recommend that you purchase an external hard drive. I actually have two just in case one drive crashes. This will also save your computer from crashing! I have two 2T SeaGate hard drives. White Balance and Focus Settings White Balance Lighting is everything when making videos. I am still learning about lighting as there is so much to learn. The better your lighting, the more crisp your videos will be. If you don t have any
special lights that you are using in your studio or room, you can just adjust the lighting on your camera by going to Settings>White Balance and then choose to do Custom White Balance. To create a custom white balance, you will place your camera in the location you will use to film, and then you will push Custom WB. Then you will hold a white piece of paper in front of the camera as it creates the custom balance. Here is a video to help you. ***video to show white balance Focus In the past, I have mostly used autofocus, because there is so much to learn, and autofocus is really easy to use. It just doesn t always do the best job. However, it is good enough as you get started. I would highly recommend playing with the manual focus. This really is about trial and error. I would set it, film, and play it on your computer to view the video. Continue until you understand how it works. Lighting Sets When filming, lighting is everything. If you don t have the right lighting, your video can become grainy. That doesn t mean that your video won t be good. I don t have very good lighting, and my videos are good, but they could be much better. This is the reason that I finally bought a light kit. There are many different options for lighting. If you have a well lit room, this could be a good thing, or a bad thing! Too much light can also cause your videos to be grainy. You really need just the right amount of light. In order to get this, you can purchase a table lamp for your desk top to use as you are filming. I know that a lot of artists use table lamps with daylight bulbs. What I have decided to do for my own business is to invest in a light kit. This is the kit that I have purchased.
You can see how I have set up my lights in my small office.
Photo References I am a portrait artist, so I often use photo references. If I am going to film a lesson or use it for a class that I am making money on I try to use only copyright free images. There are plenty of places to find copyrightfree images such as pixabay.com. You can also purchase images from websites such as Shutterstock.com. These type of sites allow you to purchase the image and a license to use. Another idea is to use your own photographs or those from your friends. If you follow a photographer, and like his/her images, reach out and ask if you can use his/her images if you share his/her name on your website and in the lesson. There are many photographers that will agree to do this. If you are not giving credit to the photographer, or if you have not received permission to use the image, I would probably look for a different photograph to use. Get Ready to Film Below you will see two set ups. The first is how I set up my studio when I am getting ready to film myself painting on an upright easel. The second is how I film when painting on a table.
Lesson 3 Ready, Set, Film.and Be Yourself Lesson 3 Objective: Understand the software available to create videos Create a video Use software to edit videos Export the video into your computer Lesson 3 Resources: Video Tutorials I am not going to lie to you..videos are very challenging to create and edit in the beginning. However, with time, the process becomes much easier! As with anything, it takes a lot of practice! Getting Started
Before you turn the camera on, look over your lesson plan and use it as a guide while you are getting ready to film, and even throughout the lesson. Think about techniques, vocabulary, etc., that you think will be valuable for your students to learn as they are completing your lesson. Do they need written instructions along with the video that they will be viewing. Many students love to have a colorful that they can print out to go along with their lessons PDF (we will talk more about this later). While this is not mandatory, it is important to know that students find this valuable. If you are painting, or doing an art lesson, do you want them to see your paint palette? The materials you are using? Think about what YOU like as a student and prepare that lesson for your own students. Share Your Gifts Wholeheartedly It is so important in your course that you share yourself, wholeheartedly. Your students are here because they love you and want to learn from you. So, you need to share it all! Don't hold back any secrets. Your students paid to learn from you, so share, step-bystep, how you do what you do. If you are able to be vulnerable, and share it all, there will be no limit to what you can do moving forward! ***View videos on sharing your gifts. Create an Introduction to Your Course Connecting with your students is the most important thing that you can do to make your course successful! Students want to know who you are and they bought your course because of who you are. Before you do anything, connect with them by creating an introduction to the course. Be sure to share the following with them: 1. Who are you? 2. Why do you do what you do? 3. What can they expect from the course? 4. What should they do if they have questions? How can they reach you? 5. Thank them for being there. You couldn't be here without them!
***View videos on creating an introduction Ready, Set, Go! You are ready! Let's do this! I will show you how I set up and get started when filming my lessons. I will share with you how I prepare for and teach a lesson. Be sure to share, step-by-step with your students, what you are doing the whole way. You want to pretend that they have no idea what it is that you are doing. Share everything and don't hold back any secrets. They paid for the course so that they can learn EXACTLY what you do! ***View videos on getting set up and beginning your videorecording Creating the Video When I am getting ready to film, I ensure that I have everything that I need, and set up in a way that makes sense. I have also learned the hard way to only videotape my lessons when my children are gone. Prior to pushing the record button on my camera I do the following: 1. Make sure my battery is fully charged on my camera. If it is not, I keep it plugged in. 2. Does my SD card have enough storage space? 3. Set up my camera, canvas and stool. I sit down and make sure that my head is not in the way of what I will be filming. 4. I gather all of the materials that I will need and place them within reach so that they are available as I need them throughout the lesson. Materials might include paintbrushes, water bowl, towel, paints, palette, etc. 5. Make sure my lights are set the way I want. 6. Put the dogs away. 7. Turn down the volume on my computer to avoid FB notifications, notifications, etc. 8. Turn the volume down on my phone, or turn it off.
When I am all set, I push the record button on my camera and get going on painting my project. When done filming, push the record button again. Whallah! You are done! ***WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO STOP WHILE I AM FILMING? While it is nice if you don t have to stop, if you need to, it really is no problem. That is what editing is for. Sometimes I have to stop a lot and other times, I can get through a whole painting without stopping. Importing the Video Clips to Your Computer Be sure that your camera is turned off. Remove your SD card from your camera and plug it into your computer. This is what the SD slot will look like in your computer: Once the SD card is in your computer, an icon will appear on your Computer Desktop. View the video below to learn how to export your videos from your SD card to your computer or external hard drive. You want to ensure that your videos are saved to your computer or external hard drive indefinitely or until your final videos are uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube. I always save my original footage until a class has aired. This way, if the students are having an issue, I am able to go back and view the original videos, and make corrections or edit a new video if needed. It is best to hold on to them for a bit of time before putting them in the trash. If your computer does not have an SD slot, you will have to install whatever software is required of your camera. This will
be listed in the owner's manual typically under a heading such as, "Connecting the Camcorder to the Computer". Another option is to save everything on the memory of the camera or SD card onto an external hard drive. The latter two options might be the easiest long term. For now, we will use the method of the SD card. Lesson 4 - Creating a Movie on imovie Lesson 4 Objective: Import into imovie or Adobe Edit the video Add a title slide or beginning Add transitions Add music Export to Vimeo or YouTube Lesson 4 Resources: In this lesson, we are going to learn how to create a movie, using imovie. Import to imovie Now you understand how to export your videos from the SD card onto your computer. Next we will import the video clips into imovie so that we can begin creating our movie! ***View video on importing to imovie Edit Your Clips Okay, we have our footage, but what do we do with it? First, I like to begin by working on the bulk of my movie. So, I will first begin by viewing the video, and editing out any unwanted footage. ***View video on beginning a movie Timing and Sound
Next, I decide on which areas need to be sped up and muted to save time and sanity for my students. Areas that I will often speed up are areas of instruction that are repetitive. If I am repeating a step that I have already gone in depth with for my students, I will often speed up that step if I repeat it again and again. However, before I speed up, I will state what I am doing so that they don t feel lost. ***View video on timing and sound Transitions You might end up with several movie clips. You can identify these because there are spaces between as seen here. How do we piece those together so that they don t appear choppy? This is where transitions come in handy. ***View video on transitions Create an Interesting Beginning to Your Movie Once our video is set up the way that we want our students to view it, it is time to get our opening and closing set up. There are different ways to open your video. I often will create a picture to use, or you can insert your final pic and have some text pop up on the picture as your title. Also, this is the time to add some music! Adding music to your videos is key! It is a great way to make your videos fun and enjoyable for the viewer! It is important that you are using copyright free music. There are a lot of websites out there that offer copyright free music. Here are a few: ***View video on creating a nice beginning Pictures and Credits
I also like to insert the final pic at the end and show the students what my final piece looked like. Also, if you do decide to use music, and I really think you should, it is important that you give credit to the musicians or website in your video somehow, some where. I will often list the information on where the music came from in a slide at the end of my videos. ***View video on pictures and credits Adding music is key! It is a great way to make your videos fun and enjoyable for the viewer! It is important that you are using copyright free music. There are a lot of websites out there that offer copyright free music. Here are a few: Picture in Picture For art lessons, it is a great idea to include the reference photo next to the project that you are working on so that the viewer can see the two side by side. I know that I prefer this as a student, and my students have also mentioned how much they love when I do this in my videos. ***View video on picture in picture Recording Voiceover ***View video on picture in picture More Tools imovie has a lot of other tools that I do not typically use, but I thought I would cover them in case you are interested! ***View video on more tools When you think that your video is complete, watch it through. Have a second set of eyes watch it through for you (if you have someone available to do so). Now you are ready to publish your movie! In the next lesson we will learn how to publish our movies to Vimeo and/or YouTube! Yahoo!
Lesson 5 Creating a Movie using Adobe Premiere Lesson 5 Objective: Import into imovie or Adobe Edit the video Add a title slide or beginning Add transitions Add music Export to Vimeo or YouTube Lesson 5 Resources: In this lesson, we are going to learn how to create a movie, using Adobe Pro Premiere. I am actually working on editing a video this next week and will break it down step by step for you. However, in the meantime, here is a great tutorial from KriscoArtProductions that really breaks it down for you in just 20 minutes. I found it exremely easy to use. You can go through imovie and look for ideas there as well on what you might want to do. ***view the YouTube tutorial - Lesson 6 Publishing Your Videos Lesson 6 Objective: Create accounts on YouTube and Vimeo Publish videos to YouTube and Vimeo Learn what settings to use on YouTube and Vimeo for your classes Lesson 6 Resources:
Video tutorials Once your video is complete, you are ready to publish it to the web! There are two ways for you to publish your videos. You can publish to YouTube, which is completely free. You can also use Vimeo, which offers a certain amount of free space. I like to use both websites for various reasons. For this section, we will only focus on how to create an account for each and publish movies to both. In week 4, we will talk about more in-depth about the pros and cons of using YouTube or Vimeo for your business ***View video on how to create a YouTube account and upload a video ***View video on more tools on YouTube ***View video on publishing from imovie to YouTube Next we will focus on Vimeo! How do we create an account? How do you upload your videos to Vimeo? What settings should I use? I will also show you how to upload your videos to Vimeo straight from imovie! ***View video on how to create a Vimeo account and upload a video ***View video on Vimeo Settings ***View video on publishing from imovie to Vimeo Lesson 7 Objective: Create a PDF support document Lesson 7 Resources: Video Tutorials Creating a PDF Students LOVE PDFs! These can be great additional supports for your students to guide them through their videos. Some students print them
off and take notes as they watch the videos, while others will print the PDFs and take on trips where there won t be WiFi. Whatever the reason, they are simple to create and a bonus for your courses. Let s create a PDF! View video: Using PDFs Support Documents In my classes, I will often create PDF support documents, just as I have for you in this course. Basically, it is just an extra support to help my students that like to have something tangible, like a book. I have many students that want to print something off and take notes as they follow along with a course. Below, I show you two different support PDF documents that I have created for my personal courses. ***to view the sample PDFs, visit the classroom. Create Your Course in a PDF Document Along with creating support documents, you can actually create your entire course in a PDF and then use that as an attachment that you send out to your students. The videos have been created. Now just type up the content and include pictures of the projects and links to the videos. Bam! There is your course! I will share more about how to share your PDF when people purchase your course in sections 3 and 4, but for now, we will learn how to create this type of document.
