8 PREFACE QUALIFICATION SUMMARY Aims & Broad Objectives The aim of popular music performace qualificatios is to provide a flexible, progressive mastery approach to the kowledge, skills ad uderstadig required for popular music performace. RSL s graded qualificatios motivate ad ecourage cadidates of all ages ad levels through a system of progressive mastery, eablig cadidates to develop ad ehace skills, kowledge ad uderstadig i a safe ad cosistet way. The qualificatios are beeficial for cadidates wishig to progress at their ow pace through smaller steps of achievemet. These qualificatios are suitable for cadidates i the Uder 16, 16+, 16 18, 19+ age groups. Progressio Graded qualificatios provide a flexible progressio route for cadidates. They are a positive meas of determiig progress ad eable cadidates to lear the ecessary techiques to gai etry to FE ad HE courses. Graded qualificatios operate accordig to a well-established methodology of progressive mastery. They allow cadidates to be tested i discrete stages i the developmet of a wide rage of skills. They ted to be more rigorous tha other types of exams ad for that reaso idustry is cofidet that achievemet at the highest level gaied by cadidates of graded qualificatios will have the skills ecessary to work i other areas of the busiess. Qualificatio Structure A graded qualificatio cosists of a rage of both practical ad kowledge-based elemets which are based o detailed requiremets outlied i the relevat syllabus. Geeral Musiciaship Questios Geeral Notes At the begiig of a Grade Examiatio, the Examier will ask the cadidate if they wish to begi with Performace Pieces or Techical Exercises. I a Performace Certificate, cadidates may preset their Performace Pieces i ay order of their choice. Prior to the start of the Performace Pieces, the Examier will coduct a soud check by askig the cadidate to play the first few bars of the first chose piece. This will set the levels for the exam ad will take place alogside the backig track. Oce the level has bee established, the Examier will the commece with the first piece i full. Note: the soud check is udertake for the first Performace Piece oly. Cadidates may perform ay or all of their pieces from memory. This is ot compulsory at ay level ad o additioal marks are give for this. With the exceptio of certai Techical Exercises where memory requiremets apply, it is permitted to use grade books which cotai otes made durig the course of a cadidate s study. Note: It is ot permitted to make ay otes at ay time durig the exam. For Geeral Musiciaship Questios, the Examier may use his or her versio of the selected piece as the basis to ask the questios if such otes cotaied o the cadidate s versio are deemed sufficietly extesive or might assist the cadidate whe aswerig the questios. The Examier will ot facilitate page turig for cadidates. Cadidates are allowed to photocopy relevat sheet music as ecessary to alleviate page turs but all copied materials must be haded ito the Examier at the ed of the examiatio. All tempo markigs are to be observed uless otherwise stated. 11 PREFACE Expectatios of Kowledge, Skills ad Uderstadig The graded examiatio system is oe based o the priciple of progressive mastery : each step i the exam chai demostrates learig, progressio ad skills i icremetal steps. Successful learig is characterised by a mastery of the fudametals of the skills demaded i each grade. Learers will be able to complete a set of practical tasks ad be tested o their uderpiig kowledge (the complexity ad variety of tasks are determied by which qualificatio is beig attempted), which allows them to demostrate popular music performace kowledge, skills ad uderstadig relevat to the grade. These techical skills set a firm platform for further techical ad creative developmet by the learer. Quality Assurace All RSL examiatios ad graded qualificatios are stadardised accordig to the processes ad procedures laid dow by RSL. CANDIDATE ACCESS AND REGISTRATION Access ad Registratio The qualificatios will: QQbe available to everyoe who is capable of reachig the required stadards QQbe free from ay barriers that restrict access ad progressio QQoffer equal opportuities for all wishig to access the qualificatios At the poit of applicatio, RSL will esure that all cadidates are fully iformed about the requiremets ad demads of the qualificatio. However, learers should esure that they are aware of the requiremets ad expectatios of each grade prior to eterig for a assessmet. FURTHER INFORMATION & CONTACT Guidace o Free Choice Pieces For all examiatios, cadidates are able to play a umber of free choice pieces: QQ Grade Examiatios: Two free choice pieces (a miimum of oe piece must be from the Piao grade book) QQ Performace Certificates: Three free choice pieces (a miimum of two pieces must be from the Piao grade book) Free choice pieces must demostrate a comparable level of techical ad musical demad to the pieces give i the set selectios i the grade books which ca be referred to as a idicatio of appropriate level. Free choice pieces must be i a moder popular gere such as Pop; Rock; Jazz; Coutry; Blues; Soul; Reggae, Film ad Musical Theatre. Ow compositios are also acceptable. Pieces should be selected carefully to esure that they provide suitable opportuity for cadidates to demostrate the relevat assessmet criteria. Cadidates are remided that if a chose Free Choice Piece does ot meet these requiremets this may impact o the level of achievemet possible withi the examiatio. 16 UNIT SPECIFICATIONS NOTATION All otated work is to be played as writte. There should be o chages or arragemet (uless previously agreed with Rockschool). Each piece is specifically writte/preseted carefully to achieve a umber of outcomes appropriate for the grade. Exclusios: At Debut ad Grade 1, if ay three or four voiced chords otated i the pieces are uachievable, cadidates may either reduce the amout of otes i the voicig or play as a spread chord if stylistically appropriate. At all grades, if ay two haded/ope voiced chords otated i the pieces are ot achievable, cadidates may either reduce the amout of otes i the voicig or play as a spread chord if stylistically appropriate. At all grades, cadidates are free to execute voiced chords otated i the pieces with either had or combiatio of hads. I ay Level 3 piece cotaiig chord symbols, voicigs may be preseted as deemed appropriate. MUSICAL INTERPRETATION For all piao grades, Rockschool ecourages idividual musicality, articulatio, expressio ad use of dyamics whe performig. This would iclude for example ow legato/staccato, pedallig, dyamic levels, accetuatio, cresc.../dim, phrasig etc. This also applies aywhere i the exam, whether withi a performace piece or ay other prepared/uprepared elemet. Note: where there is otated articulatio, expressio, dyamic or pedal markigs, these have bee specifically writte ad must be observed. PIANO SPECIFICATION The followig istrumets are accepted for use i Piao exams, at all grades. Acoustic Piao Digital Piao A umber of our exam cetres i the UK have acoustic piaos. The remaider have digital piaos. Cadidates are advised to cotact Rockschool to check their earest cetre if they specifically wish to perform the exam o a acoustic piao. 17 UNIT SPECIFICATIONS USING OWN EQUIPMENT Cadidates may brig their ow digital piao or keyboard for use i the exam, which must fit the followig criteria: Debut: Miimum of four octaves/49 keys, touch sesitive, sprug or weighted keys ad a sustai pedal. Grade 1: Miimum of five octaves/61 keys, touch sesitive, sprug or weighted keys ad a sustai pedal. Grades 2 8: 88 keys, touch sesitive, sprug or weighted keys ad a sustai pedal. Cadidates must use a 'realistic' piao soud for their exam. Cadidates will eed to ote o the applicatio form that they wish to use their ow equipmet whe applyig to take the exam. Owig to schedulig costraits ad the potetial impact o subsequet exam times, the absece of prior otificatio to Rockschool will result i the examier refusig cadidates ow equipmet o the day. Rockschool also recommeds that cadidates who wish to brig i their ow equipmet cotact their exam cetre to make ay practical arragemets beforehad ad also brig their ow assistace to carry the equipmet i/out of the exam room. Ow equipmet eeds to be practicable ad reasoably portable so as ot to impact o exam timigs. Note also that whilst it is acceptable for cadidates to use their ow equipmet for use i the exam, if ay outcomes required at a particular grade either caot be demostrated or are demostrated less securely as a result of the equipmet, this may be reflected i the marks awarded. Rockschool caot advise whether or ot cadidates use their ow equipmet. A decisio to do so is etirely at a cadidate s discretio/risk o this basis. 19 Debut The Debut Piao exam is for cadidates who have bee learig a short time ad have developed elemetary skills, techiques, co-ordiatio ad musical uderstadig. There are two types of exam available at Debut, either a Grade Exam or Performace Certificate. 20 DEBUT Debut GRADE EXAMS PREPARED WORK Cadidates are required to play three Performace Pieces ad Techical Exercises which cover scales, arpeggios ad chord voicigs. UNPREPARED WORK Cadidates are required to complete either a Sight Readig or Improvisatio/Iterpretatio test ad two Ear Tests that begi to develop melodic recall ad chord recogitio.
