Discussion Questions: Answer in complete sentences on a separate piece of paper. (Could be typed if you prefer.) Fiction: 1. Tell me about the narrator of your book. Is he or she believable? 2. How has the author taken a flat portrait of a character and added flesh and bones? What are the moments that define a character you've connected to? 3. Trace the changes of a central character. 4. Discuss the pace of the book. How fast or slow is the plot moving and how does that impact your enjoyment of the story? Non-Fiction: 1. Does the author present enough evidence to support the main ideas of this book? Do you feel there was an attention to a variety of sources for information? 2. Talk about the effectiveness of the organization of ideas in the book. 3. How are the elements of story evident in this book? Would you classify the book as informative/explanatory or argument? 4. What are things you've learned in your reading that still have you thinking?
3 Illustrated Quote: Find a quotation that is important to you or says something important about living. Get creative and display the quotation on an sheet of computer paper. Book Review: (Can be handwritten or typed.) To best write a book review, it is essential to keep track of the answers to the following questions, either as you read the book or as soon as you have finished it. All of the answers should then be incorporated into your review that should be written in essay form. Narration Setting Theme Who narrated the story? Was it first-person narration or third-person narration? Was the narrator a reliable source of information? Note the time period and location the book is set in. How did setting drive or influence the plot of the book?
4 Note the overall theme or message of the book. Genre Author Plot What genre of literature was it? How did it compare to another work in this genre? Name the author. Discuss any previous works. How did previous works compare with this work? Give a brief plot summary without giving away any key details. Your Opinion This is the most important part of the review. Did you like it? Why? Dislike it? Why? Would you read more by this author? Why or why not? Would you encourage others to read this book? Why or why not? Reading Reflection: Can be handwritten or typed but must be in essay form. Do not just list and answer the questions. What are you reading? How did you choose it? Have you read anything else by this author? Did you like the fact that you were able to choose the book for the summer reading assignment? Why? Why not? How do you find good books? Which authors are your favorites? Why? Which genre is your favorite? Why? How much did you read last year? Do you consider yourself a reader? Do you read at home? Where? Tell me about a book that you stopped reading before you were done. Why did you stop? If you have any questions or concerns about your summer reading assignment, please send me an e- mail at dawn.hamilton@k12.wv.us or send me a message through Engrade. Don't worry if it takes me a few days to respond. It is summer break and I won't be checking my messages daily!
