PEER PRESSURE Part 2
Last week we learned about peer pressure, what it is, and ways pressure can be applied. Now let s talk about how to deal with peer pressure.
RECOGNIZE IT Sometimes others may try to MANIPULATE you to do something, like help them cheat on a test. Watch out for guilt trips and promises of what they will do for you. Sometimes others may encourage you to join in bad behavior to make themselves feel better about doing something wrong.
LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE Check in with yourself. Ask yourself, How am I feeling about this? Does this feel right to me? Listen to your gut. If something does not feel right, you probably shouldn t be doing it.
LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE - and KNOW THE REAL YOU The Me I Work to Be - Every Day In Every Way Think about your inner me. What type of person are you? What type of person do you want to be? Here are some statements to help you think about the inner me : I want people to admire me for. I feel good about myself when I. I want to be able to. I like when someone says to me. I m happiest when. I see myself as. I like myself because.
LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE - and KNOW THE REAL YOU The Me I Work to Be - Every Day In Every Way What are your strengths, your inner me treasures? Consider these words when deciding on the YOU you are working to be. FOCUSED RESPONSIBLE COURAEGOUS FULL OF INTEGRITY A GOOD EXAMPLE RESILIENT PATIENT TRUSTWORTHY PROBLEM SOLVER FRIENDLY WISDOM-SEEKING RESPECTFUL TOWARDS MYSELF OPTIMISTIC CURIOUS BRAVE SENSITIVE POLITE CONFIDENT FAITHFUL HONEST RESPECTFUL TOWARDS OTHERS HONORABLE IMAGINATIVE COMPASSIONATE LOYAL ENTHUSIASTIC HOPEFUL HUMOROUS
LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE - and KNOW THE REAL YOU The Me I Work to Be - Every Day In Every Way When faced with a decision involving peer pressure, ask yourself: Will this decision help me be the person I am working to be every day in every way?
Ask yourself - Is it worth the risk? Bad behavior comes with the risk of bad consequences. Are you prepared and willing to do deal with the following consequences? Disappointing your parents Harming your reputation Being arrested and dealing with the legal system Putting others in danger??????? Being removed from your team Harming your health Hurting someone s feelings Being embarrassed
What is your exit strategy? What can you say or do what faced with a peer pressure challenge? Be straight forward: No. No, thanks. Use delay tactics: Not today. Check back with me later. Can t. I m on medicine and alcohol will make me sick.
What is your exit strategy? What can you say or do what faced with a peer pressure challenge? Use humor: Nope. I get really bad gas when I do things like that. Are you kidding? If my mom found out she would kill me and she has spies everywhere. Be deliberately distracting A smoke? No thanks, But where s the pizza? Ask someone where the restroom is, or ask to go outside to take a selfie.
Practice saying no in several different ways so you ll be ready when faced with peer pressure.
Here are some scenarios to consider to help prepare you for handling negative peer pressure. Discuss with your Advisory Class, or your friends, or even your parents. One of your friends asks to copy your homework. Your best friend wants you to go somewhere that could be interesting, but dangerous (like a flooded creek to watch the water). While you and a friend are at a store, your friend suggests you both steal something. Some student decide to skip school and go to someone s house for a party. They want you to go along. Several students are saying unkind things about another student. They look at you, waiting to see what you will say. You are at a party when someone suggests your drink some beer. Your friends are urging you to fight one of your classmates Your friend shows you an inappropriate picture of the girl who just broke up with him. He wants you to forward it to everyone you know.
