Baker 1874 Houston, TX Jasper N. Baker 1877 Virginia T. Baker THE LOVE OF GENEALOGY I do love an overgrown grave yard Tilted old stones over withered old bones Sad little rhymes about sadder old times The church door that creaks - If cold stones could speak They'd say what I love about grave yards I do love the musty old parchment That smell up my nose, that dust on my clothes The linen-like feel, the legal-type seal Once stamped, posh and sworn Now tattered and torn I do love the feel of the parchment I love being "family" detective Eons flash by in the blink of an eye Searching the past that may bring me at last To the source of my genes - Or it's toast and baked beans At the cafe full of "family" detectives I do love the folk that are dead The fathers, the mothers, sisters and brothers Names without faces that fill up blank spaces The joy of discover - All linked to each other To me they're more live than they're dead I do love the chance and the chase Kids by the dozen and criminal cousins Funny and queer how some disappear Then later, a find - he went down a mine Or buried abroad - now who could get bored Searching a fee-log for some salty sea-dog 5
