Our speaker was Steve Penny. He discussed the City-Maintained Cemeteries. 2 The GREENE County Historical and Genealogical Research Center Cordially invites you to attend an Open House on September 14, 2006 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Research Center is located at 110 North Pruett St., Paragould, Arkansas, Light refreshments will be served. The CROSS County Historical Society presents Charles A "Chuck" Sherrill in a genealogical seminar, Friday September 15, :30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The doors will open at 6 p.m. at the Cross County Museum building located at 711 E Union (next door to courthouse) in Wynne. Digging into the County Archives An in-depth look at the original records genealogists find in the county archives. Using copies of original documents provided as handouts, participants learn to seek out every helpful detail found on a marriage license, find clues buried in a deed, track a case through court minutes and understand the variety of probate records. (1 hour) Analysis of a Case File You ve found it! A long trail has led you to that hefty packet of old papers filed in your ancestor s lawsuit. But how do you wade through the legal jargon and cull the valuable research clues hidden in a hundred pages of cramped handwriting? Learn how to systematically identify, sort and read case files for effective use. (1 hour) Charles A. Sherrill (M.A., M.L.S.) is Director of the Brentwood Library near Nashville and a former Director of Public Services for the Tennessee State Library & Archives. His education includes master s degrees in History and Library Science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Sherrill has been active in genealogical research and publishing since he was a teenager. Among his works are books on several Tennessee counties, particularly Grundy County where most of his ancestors lived. He began his career at Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was Head Reference Librarian. As director of the Cleveland (Tenn.) Public Library for nine years, Sherrill edited a series of genealogical publications about Bradley County. Additional works include two family genealogies, editing "Tennessee s Confederate Widows and their Families." two volumes of penitentiary records entitled "Tennessee Convicts," and his most recent publication "The Reconstructed 1810 Tennessee Census."
