8 Know Your Audience You need to understand your target audience Who are they? What information do they need? What are they going to use it for?
9 What Do You Want to Accomplish? You need to define the purpose of your newsletter To promote events? To provide technical content? To document events? Board-focused, Membership-focused, External-focused Or is it part of a larger marketing strategy? Newsletters can educate, inform, advocate, promote, influence, sell, or simply connect.
10 How Much Time do Want to Spend? Volunteers do not have infinite time available Effective newsletters require time: Time from editor to solicit articles Time for people to write articles Time to editor to follow up on getting articles Time for layout Time for proof-reading/editing Time for printing / distribution Scale your newsletter plans based on the amount of time you have available
11 Distribution Methods Postal Mail (printed) PDF Posting on website as PDF Important: You should always make a newsletter available as a PDF Post current and past newsletters posted on your website

14 Tips for Soliciting Articles The usual ones: it will be fun it won t take very long to do I ll help you write it may be true, but not very inspiring More useful ones: You get a chance to be published Chance to practice your writing skills Demonstrate how smart/competent you are Chance to show off a project or event you are running Get your name out there
