2 The Differences between the Resume and the Curriculum Vitae (CV)? One of the biggest differences between a resume and a CV is in the audience. A CV speaks largely to an academic audience and documents your academic and intellectual accomplishments. A resume is read by hiring managers in a non-academic organization, and should be tailored to this group. 2

4 What it is? CV: is a fairly detailed overview of your life s accomplishments, especially those most relevant to the realm of academia Resume: is a general and concise introduction of your experiences and skills as they relate to a particular career or position that you are aiming to obtain. 4

5 Audience CV: Fellow academics in your field of study Resume A general audience of employers who hire for a wide variety of positions Goal To present your full academic history : including teaching, research, service, publications, presentations, awards, and affiliations. To demonstrate that you have the skills and experience necessary to succeed within the position you are seeking Length There is no page limit. While it s a brief and concise - no more than a page or two. 5

6 Focus CV: Demonstrating your academic achievements and scholarly potential Resume experiences :job-related, additional and volunteer, as well as the skills you've gained from these Essential Information Lists of publications, presentations, teaching experiences, education, awards, and grants. 7 Resumes Resume is a self-advertisement so If you're a smart job seeker, You should know that your resume is a key part of getting a the new job. Nearly the most employers read your résumé before they meet you, and their reaction to it usually determines whether they will consider you further by interviewing you or not. In addition, your job interviews will often start with references to your résumé. Consequently, spend considerable time in developing one or more versions of your résumé, each one targeted for a specific type of job. Your résumé must be readable, arranged, and free of grammatical, spelling, and typographical errors. Because it is so crucial in the job application process, edit your résumé carefully and have someone else to review it before you send it out.

8 How to Write a Resume?! They are few tips to help you in writing your Resume: 1-Find a job for your Resume: Have in your mind the job you want to apply for or at least figure out what type of job you want. Because the more you know about the job you want, the better you can target your resume. 2-Use keywords strategically: Because many employers scan resumes to determine the presence of certain keywords. you need to be sure that your resume contains all of the proper keywords for your industry, and the particular job for which you are applying.try to keep in mind what words the employer uses in the advertisement. *Avoid using every keyword mentioned in the job posting, however, or your resume will look suspicious. 8

9 3-Chose a resume format: the first thing that can quickly capture an employer s eye is the right resume format. Depending on your job objective and work history, the best resume format might be a chronological, functional, or combination. The chronological resume format puts the work history and achievements together in the body of the resume. The functional resume format divides them up, with the achievements in the body and the history at the end of the page. The combination resume format is, well, a combo of the chronological and functional. 9

10 4-Your Resume Heading: This is the section at the top of your resume which gives all of your contact information including your name, address, , and phone number.(put your name in bold and make the font size a bit larger than the rest of the text on the page) 5-Your Resume Job Objective: If you're using your resume to get a new job, it's key that you make it easy for the reader of your resume to see what type of job you want. with a job objective statement, you quickly tell your potential employer three things: What position you are looking for. What level of responsibility you want. How to interpret all the information on the resume. The job objective tells the reader, "Everything that follows is relevant to this job." That's important because this is a marketing piece, not your life history. 10

11 6-Summary of Qualifications: When we say "Summary of Qualifications," we mean "Summary of Qualifications for your job objective." Remember, your resume is a marketing piece for your next job, not the story of your whole life. So, rather than summing up your entire career in your Summary of Qualifications, you just need to write about how you qualify for the next step in your career. In your Summary section, you can write about your experience, credentials, expertise, personal values, work ethic, background, or anything that qualifies you for the job you're going for. You're free to make claims, drop names, and do your best to tempt the reader to finish reading the resume. Remember, all claims must be verified later when you write the body of the resume, so be honest while giving yourself full credit. 11

12 7-Work Experience: Your work experience is one of the first things an employer looks for on your resume. Enter this information carefully. When listing your work experience, you should: List your jobs in reverse chronology: that is, most recent first. Use years (no months): when listing dates on your resume, this makes it easier for the employer to quickly grab your employment timeline. 8-Achievement Statements: You can spark the employer's interest right away by writing strong resume achievement statements instead of boring job descriptions. By writing about your experience in terms of achievements (not boring job descriptions) you convey three things: You have the required experience or skills. You're good at this work or at using these skills. You take pride in and enjoy your work. 12

13 9-Listing Education on Your Resume: The Education section is usually placed at or near the end of the resume. But some times, it is better to place it under the Summary of Qualifications section near the beginning of the resume: If your education is highly relevant to your job objective. If you're a new graduate. If you have no employment experience in the field you are going into, but have a degree or training in that field. 10-Reference statement: In most cases, conclude your résumé with "References available on request." 13

14 Curriculum Vitae (CV) It s the most flexible and convenient way to make applications. It s a marketing document in which you are marketing something: yourself! You need to "sell" your skills, abilities, qualifications and experience to employers. There is no "one best way" to construct a CV. It is your document and can be structured as you wish within the basic framework below plus each sector may require a different emphasis on a different aspect of the content, such as career history or qualifications. It should be positive, stressing achievements and strengths, and make a good impression in a clear and positive way. 14

15 Writing a Personal Profile for your CV. What is a Personal Profile? is an introductory paragraph at the beginning of your CV. It is a short statement outlining your personal characteristics. It tells the reader what kind of a person you are, the attributes and qualities that you posses and the experience you have. 15

16 Your personal profile is not the place to be humble; it is your chance to be noticed and tell the potential employer exactly who you really are and what you can do for them. But be careful, do not make the mistake of going over the top and give the impression to the prospective employer that you re either arrogant or simply too good to be true! An excellent personal profile statement must be: Relevant Short and to the point! Only contain positive information 16

17 What I can include in my Personal Profile? Personal Qualities (such as Self-motivated, Creative, Adaptable, An eye for detail) Skills (such as Management skills, Communication skills, Problem-solving skills, Design skills) Experience (such as 10 years in management., Excellent track record., Extensive background, Wide experience in.) How long should a Personal Profile Statement be? There are no set rules about the length of a Personal Profile but we would suggest you keep it within the 40/70-words boundary; that means no longer than five lines. 17

18 Examples: Personal profile for IT: I am an open-minded individual with a proven track record in designing websites and creating databases. I have strong technical skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills. I am eager to be challenged in order to grow and improve my communication and professional IT skills gained through previous experiences in the IT sector. 18

19 Examples: Personal profile for Project Manager: I am an energetic, ambitious person who has developed a mature and responsible approach to any task that I undertake, or situation that I am presented with. As a graduate with three years of experience in management, I am excellent in working with others to achieve a certain objective on time and with excellence. 19

20 How to Write a CV?! They are some key points to consider while Writing you CV. Include your personal details: name, address, phone number and . People often forget them! Do not include your age or a photograph unless specifically asked to do so. When you write your employment history and education details put your most recent achievements first. Make the length of your CV relative to your work experience: if you have many years of experience in a wide range of roles, you can justify a long CV. Academic CVs are usually at least 4-5 pages long. 20

21 You can sound professional without using terminology or 'managementspeak'. Keep your writing clear, direct and focused. Remember that the person looking at your CV might not be an expert in your field. Try to write your CV using as few words as possible - this way you'll keep to the point and avoid waffle. Use doing words on your CV such as developed or organised. This makes you sounds active and not passive. Don t talk about your social life unless your activities display an important skill such as leadership or teamwork. 21

22 Give the addresses of two referees; one should preferably be your current employer. If they asked for that. Most importantly, proofread your CV. There should be no spelling, punctuation or grammar errors: unprofessional CVs are rejected. If you find editing your own work difficult, get a friend to read your CV. Once you have finished it, show it to as many people as possible: your supervisor/mentor, colleagues, even your family and friends. Their first impressions will help you to improve your CV. 22

23 Where do CVs go wrong? Lack of relevant information: Many candidates make misplaced assumptions about what is important to the employer and so fail to provide the relevant information in their CV. Insufficient evidence: Unsubstantiated claims won t work. You need to prove you have what they need. So instead of your CV saying you have 'good communication skills', give an example of where you demonstrated this to good effect e.g. 'write monthly blog on company developments as part of our social media strategy'. Use fancy layout: Avoid unusual fonts, columns, tables etc in your CV when writing it in a Word document. The formatting can so easily go awry when it is read by a recruiter. 23

24 Errors: Usually nine out of 10 CVs have errors on them and are often rejected on that basis alone. Your CV must be impeccably presented if you want to demonstrate your professionalism and attention to detail. Always ask someone else to check it over for you. Negative information: Your CV should include only positive information. Never criticise a previous employer or refer to difficulties or disappointments unless you were able to turn them around. Poor language: The use of jargon or clumsy expression can damage the chances of even the most capable of candidates. Instead of using the 'I' pronoun, such as I did this, I did that', use positive action words to lead bullet points e.g. 'Initiated this, created that, which will seem much more dynamic. 24

25 Poor Presentation: A successful CV is always carefully and clearly presented, and printed on clean, crisp white paper. The layout should always be clean and well structured and CVs should never be crumpled or folded, so use an A4 envelope to post your applications. *At the end Remember, the reader is asking themselves two basic questions: can you do the job and will you fit their organization? So try to convince them with these two main key points.* 25
