2 Introduction Money makes a difference to all of us. If you want to save up your pocket money to buy a new computer game or to spend on a day trip, you will need to know how to look after your money. Ways to pay for things Most people usually keep their money in a bank account. This means that their money is looked after by the bank and that there are different ways to get money out and make payments. 1. Cheque: This is used if you need to pay your money to another person. It is a piece of paper that tells the bank who to pay and how much. 2. Cash card: A plastic card that allows you to take money out of a bank account. You put it into a cash withdrawal machine and type in four numbers that make up your Personal Identification Number (PIN). 3. Debit card: A bit like a cash card. You can use a debit card to take out money from a bank account using a cash withdrawal machine but it also allows you to pay for goods in shops. When you pay in a shop, you ll be asked to enter your PIN using a keypad, the same number that you use to withdraw money at a cash machine. 4. Credit card: A plastic card which allows you to buy things and pay for them later. You have an agreed limit on the amount you can borrow, and if you don t pay the total in full by the due date the amount you owe will keep going up and up. 3 Activity: What's my job? What is your dream job? Is it a firefighter? An actor? Or maybe a doctor? What are you going to do? Draw a picture of your dream job. Then act it out without talking. 4 Activity: Snakes and Ladders Money can make doing certain things possible. This game will help you think about what money means to you. You will see what it can do to your daily life. It ll make you think about ways that you could look after your money and do the things you want. What are you going to do? You are going to make your own game of snakes and ladders. I try to save my pocket money. Sometimes I want to buy a computer game and it costs more than my pocket money. So I have to keep it for a few weeks. Then I can buy it. 6 Activity: Change relay To look after your money you need to know how much you ve got. This can involve doing some counting Don t worry though. It s not hard, as this game will show. How to do the activity Your team will be given some coins. My mum gave me a piggy bank. I put some money in it every week. Govinda, 7, Devon Your Leader will ask you to line up behind a chair and put your coins on it. Get ready to count, and race your friends at the same time. Your Leader will shout out an amount of money. You need to make sure this amount is on the chair at the opposite side of the room. If you are the quickest do it, and get it right, your team gets a point. The team with the most points at the end wins the game.
