5 Sugar is insidious. It s not just that sugar is addictive, although it is very, very addictive, it is also permanently linked to a time when nearly every person longs to return to subconsciously a time when things were much more simple childhood. Put simply, our emotions trigger sugar cravings because we were rewarded with sugar as children. Whether it was baking with your grandmother, getting a lollipop for being a good little boy or girl, or celebrating your birthday with cupcakes and cookies, we were taught at a very young age, by our parents, teachers and advertising companies, that sugar = not only a good taste, but sugar also = feeling good. 7 STEPS TO FREEDOM FROM SUGAR Grace Space LLC, All Rights Reserved 5
6 If you ve ever tried quitting sugar cold turkey, you may know that it often is accompanied by a borage of awful emotions. If nothing else, this proves sugar and our emotions are inextricably linked. In order to be free of sugar addiction, we must clean up our emotions, clean up our subconscious childhood associations with sugar, and replace the bad information we have been holding on to since about the age of 7. 7 The Process It s time to learn all about your triggers, the emotional reasons behind those sugar cravings. This will help you to stop sugar addiction in it s tracks and keep the cravings from coming back. 8 Step 1: Your Feelings Before Eating Sugar Identify how you feel when you begin to crave sugar. Are you irritable? Tired? Lonely? Hungry? Happy? Neutral? Close your eyes and think about the last time you ate sugar. With your eyes still closed, imagine how you felt right before you went looking for the sugar then open your eyes and write as much as you can about those emotions here: 7 STEPS TO FREEDOM FROM SUGAR Grace Space LLC, All Rights Reserved 8
9 Step 2: Your Thoughts Before Eating Sugar Identify what kinds of thoughts you were thinking before you went looking for sugar. Go back to the place you were in during step 1, but now rather than focusing how you felt, notice what you were thinking about. You might find thoughts like I m not good enough, I m hungry, Why is my boss such a jerk, Why won t my kids do their homework, Today was great, I deserve a treat, or perhaps no thoughts at all. 10 Step 3: Your Feelings While Eating Sugar Identify how you feel while you are eating sugar. Do you feel sedated? In a trance? Guilty? Happy? Hungry? Sad? Neutral/nothingness? Close your eyes and think about the last time you ate sugar. With your eyes still closed, imagine how you felt while eating the sugar. 7 STEPS TO FREEDOM FROM SUGAR Grace Space LLC, All Rights Reserved 10
11 Step 4: Your Thoughts While Eating Sugar Identify what kinds of thoughts you are thinking while you eat sugar. What kinds of thoughts are running through your mind? This is exactly what I wanted, I should stop, I feel so much better, I feel so much worse, or perhaps no thoughts at all? Write as much as you can about the thoughts you think while eating sugar here: 7 STEPS TO FREEDOM FROM SUGAR Grace Space LLC, All Rights Reserved 11
12 Step 5: Your Feelings After Eating Sugar Identify how you feel after you are done eating sugar. Close your eyes and think about the last time you ate sugar. With your eyes still closed, imagine how you felt right after you were done eating the sugar. Break it down into the following time increments: immediately after, 10 minutes after, 1 hour after, and a few hours later. At each interval, what are you feeling? Sadness? Sedation? Calm? Guilt? 14 Step 6: Your Thoughts After Eating Sugar Identify your thoughts after you are done eating sugar. Close your eyes and think about the last time you ate sugar. With your eyes still closed, imagine the thoughts you were thinking right after you were done eating the sugar. Break it down into the following time increments: immediately after, 10 minutes after, 1 hour after, and a few hours later. At each interval, what are you thinking? I can t, believe I did it again, Why can t I stop, I m so weak, That wasn t so bad, I really needed that, or perhaps even no thoughts at all? 16 Step 7: Write Your Script You have now learned a tremendous amount about your subconscious triggers; the kinds of thoughts and emotions that lead to your unique consumption of sugar. Now that we know your triggers, let s create a script that you will read to yourself the instant you feel the very first emotional trigger to stop there rest of the domino effect from ever taking place. Use the prompts in blue found below the blank lines to fill in the correct answers. Let s begin:, (Fill in your name) I know you are feeling (fill in the emotions you listed in step 1), which means your brain will pretty soon begin to think thoughts like, (fill in the thoughts you listed in step 2), and right after that the urge to find some sugar will try to pop up. Please remember, you do not need that junk. What you are feeling right now is a very real, valid emotion and there are healthier ways that you can process this emotion. 17 Please remember that in the past while you ate sugar you felt, (fill in the worst emotions you listed in step 3), and in the past while you ate sugar you thought, (fill in the worst thoughts you listed in step 4). Please remember that in the past, when you were done eating sugar, you felt,, (fill in the worst emotions you listed in step 5), and in the past, when you were done eating sugar, you thought,, (fill in the worst thoughts you listed in step 6). Remember right now, it is not worth it! There is no such thing as, just one piece! Sugar will only make you feel worse! Sugar will only make your thoughts worse! Sugar will only hurt you.
