CONTENTS SUMMARY EMPLOYMENT UNIVERSITY PROJECTS With experience in the realms of Architecture and Graphic Design, I m interested in problem solving, beautiful ideas and how they manifest themselves. Recently graduating from The University of Edinburgh with an MA and MArch degree, my understanding of the design process from concept to realisation is now being challenged and rationally applied, outwith the comfort of purely conceptual design. With a healthy zest for challenging the status quo in design, I frequently ask why not?, when others might ask why?. PROJECTS IN PRACTICE Hamish Jack PLEASE CONTACT ME THROUGH ABOUT AT HAMISHJACK.COM REFERENCES I am currently offering my perspective to work at a branding agency in Edinburgh, detailed overleaf, and am always looking to build on what experience I have. Design isn t something I confine to an office, I enjoy becoming involved in projects and distilling their ideas until they are truly effective; I am currently building on my practical experience with an array of personal projects. Often this also involves a healthy dose of my dry sense of humour - I mean, why not? PAGE 1 REFERENCE CONTACT DETAILS ON REQUEST

SUMMARY EMPLOYMENT UNIVERSITY PROJECTS PROJECTS IN PRACTICE +GRAPHIC DESIGNER EVVIVA BRANDS CURRENT - 9 MONTHS PAGE 3 Hamish is self-motivated, proficient in drawing and model-making and works under his own initiative.this short experience [Edinburgh Colonies project] has demonstrated that he has already acquired and developed key skills which would be used in practice. I am happy to recommend him, both in my capacity as architectural design tutor, and as supervisor for the Edinburgh Colonies project. Professor Fiona McLachlan Head of the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture brochure In my nine months with Evviva Brands I have worked on several large scale employer branding projects for clients ranging from billion-dollar Silicon Valley technical companies, to wildlife charities. My role has encompassed both print and digital design, devising concepts and designing assets. I have had responsibility for the following: concepts for advertising designing GIF web banners designing illustrator graphics design generating print-ready files flowing copy
UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT YEAR + JUNIOR ARCHITECT ECE EDINBURGH COUNCIL MONTHS MONTHS I have also been involved in projects for Evviva Brands themselves, from redesigning the company newspaper to social media assets. A personal highlight with Evviva was taking sole responsibility for compiling a style-guide for the world s largest online retailer, which passed seven rounds of internal inspection, and reached the CEO without a single fault. I have learned a lot about the importance of strategy within the industry, and have enjoyed being involved in the company s own market repositioning. Working in the Creative Design department of the European market leader in shopping centre design, I was involved in devising interior concepts and executing drawings for shopping centre projects. I also developed an understanding of the impact of business strategies on architectural design, and the necessary technical programming and specific constraints of this particular industry. Predominantly concerned with the well-being of customers, I acquired an insight into the approach utilised while trying to make the interior environment as natural as possible. I worked in a small office drawing a series of plans, sections and elevations of a typical Edinburgh Colony House utilising original archive drawings and measured building surveys. As my work featured in an Edinburgh Council exhibition with the aim of each Colony being designated a Conservation Area, a high level of attention to detail was required. Run in association with Richard Murphy Architects, I also gained experience of working under leadership and ensuring clear communication with colleagues. PAGE 4
SUMMARY EMPLOYMENT UNIVERSIT Y PROJECTS PROJECTS IN PRACTICE MINDFULNESS 1 Photography can be used with the principles of mindfulness to achieve the same results. Training the eye to look for creative or unusual aspects of the environment results in a heightened awareness. This is this same awareness which causes one to notice strangers smiling, and kind behaviour in others. PAGE 5 MArch ARB Pt 2 FINAL YEAR PROJECT My final year project was structured in two parts; one consisting of a string of related studies, and the other developing these precedents into a holistic design. After a field trip to Tokyo, I was struck by the many aspects of Japanese society which operate in stark contrast to our own. Developing this, I began to look at self-analysis and the polarity of thought, in the context of megalopolis. In a city of such a scale, are there spaces to breathe? And with one of the largest urban populations on the planet how do people cope with being alone, together? In the spirit of the core idea of polarity, I developed a project which turns being alone, together into a productive concept for those with mental health issues, and designed a safe space in which to heal the mind. CONCEPT EXECUTION MINDFULNESS THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY INTROSPECTIVE POSTCARDS HIDDEN SPACE TWITTER; BEING ALONE, TOGETHER IRREGULAR PATHS WALKING THERAPY CENTRE
POSTCARDS ORIGINAL 3 These postcards have made a journey. The people writing them have made a journey. Lives have crossed and no one is any the wiser. Alone, Together draws attention to the unity between all those yearning to make a connection to home. In focusing their attention on their past connections they are blind to the potential comfort of knowing there are others nearby who inevitably share in the same struggles and passions. TODAY Photographs generally focus on areas which are aesthetically pleasing, naturally. This paints a picture of a place in an unrealistically positive way. I explored what happened when a photograph was taken directly opposite the original - creating a polarity of perspective from a single view-point, within my super-block site in Japan. This creates a space between the two photographs which is undocumented, and hidden to a certain degree. Mapping these photographs over the site creates a network of photographic planes, and attempts to highlight the undocumented areas to the same degree as the photographs themselves. Throughout this process, hidden spaces are exposed and gain significance within their environment. (1/4 Introspective Maps) PAGE 6 One postcard is original, the other two are styled to appear the same but portray the view directly behind the photographer, the same view today, and the introspective rewriting of the correspondence (not featured). I hope the irony of focusing on our past while trying to move forward becomes clear. The postcards become a metaphor for some people s lives; projecting false impressions, rather than working with the one we know best - ourselves. (1/9 Postcards) REVERSED HIDDEN SPACE 2
SUMMARY EMPLOYMENT UNIVERSIT Y PROJECTS PROJECTS IN PRACTICE People transmit their thoughts to a worldwide audience, yet fail to interact with those to either side of them. Following the Alone, Together theme, this project identifies all those tweeting within the super-block between the 7th December 2013, at and the 14th December 2013 at By giving each tweet a 4x4m social interaction area, it gives an indication of the number of people within proximity to each tweet; appearing as a map of cubes. This creates a social space where people share digitally, but fail to interact with those nearest them. These spaces become opportunities for interaction, and experiences which are hastily ignored. They become hidden spaces within the fabric of the super-block. Drawing a line through each cube creates a bar-code where darker areas indicate a higher tweet frequency; pixellating and tracing creates a map of this hidden space. ALONE, TOGETHER 4 5 PAGE 7 IRREGULAR PATHS
WALKING THERAPY CENTRE Walking is well known to stimulate the body and mind, and make people more comfortable talking, as a common environment and cause put them at ease. Architectural features such as the aisle in a church are present so that your sole focus is on the altar ahead of you. CBT will be provided on a one-to-one basis with a single floor operating as one therapy space. Using the patterns created in the previous project, irregular pathways are created while glazing their openings lets in irregular amounts of light. Layering these at different scales, allows patients to move up the building as their condition improves, eventually reaching a totally lit area; the end of their course of CBT. This inverts the process of introspective behaviour, literally in the form of the building and metaphorically with patients as they try to invert their mental conditions. 6 PLANS GF-5 SITE PLAN PAGE 8

SUMMARY EMPLOYMENT UNIVERSITY PROJECTS PROJECTS IN PRACTICE As the majority of my work with Evviva has been under strict contract with clients, I am unable to include any client work in my portfolio - however my body of work from university is testament to my software aptitude, and examples of internal projects for Evviva have been included. EVVIVA BRANDS 1 2 For a blog post, I illustrated creative distribution with the linearity of a warehouse developing into the lines of a creative layout. Developing the concept of revealing the grain, a series of information points and way-markers were developed to reveal various aspects of the various sites around a nature trail. A pop-up and bird hide were also designed. PAGE 13
