You wish you could do that Ever since your first foray into the Anime world, you ve wanted to draw the characters you see on the television and in the Manga. The problem is how to get started. Online tutorials are nice, and offer some help, but there are times it they seem to skip steps, leaving you scratching your head and wondering why your drawing looks different than the tutorial. You ve tried video tutorials, but they tend to go too fast for you to grasp the tricks and techniques. You re at the end of your rope, but you re not ready to throw in the towel.

That s where this book comes in. We show you how to draw Anime in a concise way and explain it to make it easy to follow the steps. We break down the picture and teach you how to draw it piece by piece.

You re ready to start drawing Anime As you continue with this book, you will find it simple to read and follow the lessons and copy the steps for making basic drawings in Anime.. This book will teach you: What is difference between Anime and US Animation is. What basic materials you are going to need to draw anime. Basic color theory. Do s and Don ts to drawing Anime Step-by-step breakdowns of the lessons. Anime is not like drawing life-like characters. You can bring to life by expressions and poses, but they are like drawing real people. This is a more simple way of drawing that can get complicated, but only if you let it. This book is here to show you that you can draw Anime and love it. So, keep scrolling, reading, and follow along with the lessons, and you will be drawing Anime in no time.

Chapter 1 There is Animation and then there is Japanese animation. We all know cartoons. We couldn t wait to get up early enough to get our bowl of cereal, turn on the television and watch our favorites before our parents got up and kicked us outside to play for the day, but little did we know there were so many different types of cartoons. American cartoons, like Bugs Bunny, Bullwinkle, and Super Friends were staples, but soon gave way to others as the decades changed the animation got better, or worse depending on how you look at it. Still not much compares to what we grew up with, unless you compare it to Samurai Jack, or He-Man. As they years rolled by and we got older, the torch got passed and our beloved cartoons gave way to Adventure Time and The Adventures of Gumball. There is one style of animation that ages like a fine wine. Japanese Animation or Anime, has its own style, flair, and many genres as well. They tell fully fleshed out stories that are based on fantasy or historical moments in time. Some are gritty; some are whimsical, and others are gothic and suspenseful, but all have one thing in common. The basic animation is the same. It s just the medium that has changed. Many are still hand drawn, but computers have made it much easier to make Anime. From timehonored and loved Anime like Star Blazers and Dragon Ball Z to Blue Gender and Ghost in the Shell, Anime has something for everyone, and it never fails to capture one s attention.

Chapter 2 Tools of the trade In the journey of trying to teach yourself how to draw, you ve probably started with a regular pencil and notebook paper. That is a good way to get the feel of something and to figure out if you re going to like doing it. There is no risk because you are using materials you have lying around, but you are ready to dive into your new interest in earnest, and you are prepared to invest some money into the tools you are going to need to do it properly. Here is a starter list. Pencils Pencils come in two types, traditional lead and wood, and mechanical. There are advantages to both. First you need to know there is a hardness scale to the lead you will be using. The harder the lead, the lighter the mark,, but how can you tell how hard the lead is before drawing your character?

The lead has two scales of measurement when it comes to the hardness: H- Hard lead. This is good for light sketches and getting a general idea of what you what your toon to look like, but don t bear down too hard. It will leave ruts in the paper that will not come out. B-Soft lead. This lead erases easily. It is used to darken the lines you want to keep and also for shading and shadowing, another technique for another book. Many hobby and art stores will have tins and kits that have a small sampling of the drawing pencils. This is handy for getting started.

Buying a lead holder is more environmentally friendly; you re not using a wood pencil. You can also buy the leads you need in slide open packs. To change them out, all you need to do is depress the button on the end of the lead holder, take out the one you re finished using, and put in the new lead. Pencil Sharpeners

A tool everyone has in their home already. To the left is a lead pointer. This is used to sharpen the lead in the lead holder. You place the lead in the main part and circle either left or right. The little white circle is used to clean off the excess lead. Just stab the white circle and then pull out the lead, all clean. Erasers There are many types of erasers on the market for various applications, but the only eraser you will need to add to your list is a trusty old pink rubber one. This will erase any unwanted lines from the artwork. If you want to erase faster, there are battery operated erasers as well.

Eraser guard This may look like a weird piece of aluminum, but it can help save your artwork. An eraser guard is made to be placed over the lines in a piece of art to keep them from being erased along with the mistake. The different holes are to help you line it up to the different types of errant marks you may make. You can even make straight and even dotted lines with an eraser guard.

Paper You ve probably already sketched on notebook paper or printer paper. To keep you work all in one place, you ve probably either kept it in the notebook or placed the printer paper pieces in a binder. Purchasing a standard sketch pad can keep all of your practice drawings and other works of art in one place. It is also a good medium to draw on as it is strong enough to take heavy eraser usage, unlike notebook or printer paper. Your work space

If you look to the left, you will see a drafting, or drawing table. If you wish, you can purchase one. It will make your life easier in terms of positioning and securing your piece of artwork so you can keep sketching and drawing without fear of it slipping. There are portable versions of these tables as well. They can be placed on an existing table and are often cheaper for those just starting out. T-square If you are opting to use a drafting/drawing table, you may need one of these. A T-square can help you line up the paper and also help anchor drawing triangles, and other drawing aids.

Templates This is one of many. Templates can help with repetitive shapes, such as circles. In Anime, you will find yourself needing this template for eyes and other rounded items in the picture.

Felt or fine tip marker Below are medium grade inking markers. You can use a fine-tipped permanent marker to start out. If you are planning on continuing to draw Anime and eventually Manga, the ones in the picture are more reliable and give a smooth experience. Inking pens are used to finalize the pencil drawing by going over all the lines you want to keep with a pen. This makes the art more permanent. Watercolors, Markers, pencils, oh my! We will delve into basic colors in this book, but there are three main mediums in Anime art: watercolors, markers, and color pencils. Each has their own grade, look, and feel to them. You can use pastels and charcoals, but these aren t the most popular and require less maintenance to keep it from smudging. You will find you medium in time, but for now basic color pencils should do nicely.

Chapter 3 Theory of color Since you were little, you ve always been given crayons to color in coloring books and make your own works of art that your parents proudly displayed on the refrigerator or at work in their cubicles. You never really thought about it much, but as you got older and really started to pay attention to color and color schemes, you began to toy around with color theory and how it played a part in bringing your pieces of art to life. Anime is no different. Each character has their own palette and those palettes emphasized their personality and how they acted in given moments. Let s start with the basics of the theory

To the left, we have the basic color wheel. We are introduced to red, blue, and yellow as primaries in kindergarten, but the color wheel expanded this a bit. I am not saying there are new primary colors, but the color wheel added basic orange, violet, and green into the mix. There are primary, secondary, tertiary, and colors in the wheel. If you look to the right or left of the main colors, you will see them. There are also complimentary and contrasting colors, too. Let s start with the contrasting colors, as these are used the most. If you look at

the wheel, you will see green and red contrast one another. Contrasting colors make each other really stand out when adding color to a piece. You can find contrasting colors by simply looking across from the color you want to use. Complimentary colors are colors that work well with one another. They are used to add accents to your character, their background, and total composition. Secondary and tertiary colors add depth to a piece and help to shade it. Let s look a green again, but this time, look to the right of it. Try making a leaf shape and coloring one half green and the other yellow-green. You can immediately see how they work together to let you see which half of the leaf is in shade and which has more light. You re wondering where all the other colors are. Here is a more expanded color wheel: In this wheel, you see more tones of the same colors, but how to use it remains the same. Here you have your neutrals (brown/tan/black/white). You can really see how the different shades can work together. For this book, we will be using the simplified one above. Your characters colors You ve probably never given this much thought, but all the characters you love in the Anime you watch have their colors depict who they are. Sakura s reds and pinks show her soft and fiery sides. Kakashi wears more blues, which are cool. This matches his personality, cool under fire and not fazed by much. The best example of color play is Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail. Each of her armors is colored so you have a basic idea of what they do before she unleashes their abilities.

Chapter 4 - What to expect Before we start the lessons, there are a few tidbits I would like to share with you: 1. The lessons feature simple drawings. 1. This is so you can follow them with ease. Each one is broken down into steps. 2. I will reference shapes for body and facial features. 1. I do this to help your mind wrap itself around what you are drawing. This makes it easier to understand and draw. 3. Don t sweat it, if it s not perfect on your page. 1. Don t expect perfection when you re just starting out. Even Miyazaki started with simple concepts before making Howl, Kiki, and all of his other masterpieces. 4. If you want to draw it again, go right ahead. 1. If you want to repeat the same lesson more than once, it s alright. Do the lesson as many times as you feel you need to before moving on to the next. 5. It s not a race. 1. Having patience when trying something new is the key to learning it. Don t rush it.

6. Don t worry about everyone else. 1. The pictures and Anime art you see online are the results of months and years of practice perfecting the art. The artists you see online started where you are now. 2. If you want to compare your progress to anyone, compare it to your previous works to see improvements. 7. Take a break. 1. If you find yourself getting frustrated, take a break and a deep breath. Then, go do something else for a bit. This should be fun for you, not aggravating. Sometimes, you just need to step away from it for a while.

Chapter 5 The School Girl

This is a classic staple in many Anime series. The short skirt, ties, and blouse are standard due to the uniform codes in Japan. It s only fitting we start with a school girl first. Let s take a good look at her before we start. She s stroking her hair and looking at her nails. Posing means everything in Anime. So, she could be bored listening to the person talking, or she could be getting ready to say something when they finish. It s all the body language. Her colors contrast one another. The colors are bright and energetic; this could mean she is bored with the speaker.

We will start with the head and how to position it to get the tilt we want. This is done by drawing a T and adding the eyes along the crossbar of the T. If you look at the picture to the left, you can see how we have placed the T. Take notice of how the other features align with the cross. We started with pencil and inked it in so you can see the detail better. 1. With your pencil, sketch the eye, and the small circle within it. 2. Add the upper eye lid. 3. Add the lower lid. 4. Now, add the ovals on each of the eyes.

5. Draw the eye brows by making curves and linking them together at the ends. 6. A wide angle V makes the nose. There is very little detail in the facial features in Anime, and our girl is no different. 7. Draw a side-ways D for the mouth. 8. Fill in the mouth and hint at the bottom lip.

9. For the right side of the face, make a long curve. 10. From the left, make another curve linking it at a soft point where the chin is located. 11. On the left, make another long and soft curve to start the hair and end it in a check mark. 12. Draw loose V s for the bangs. 13. We re going to put more detail in the next step, but don t worry. It won t be hard for you to follow.

14. Make a large semi-circle for the top of the head. 15..Bring it down to the right and sweep the curve outward. 16. Curve it and then down again. 17. From the right side of the face, make the long and thin curves you see for her hair there and connect it to what you started. 18. While you re on this side, add the small part for her neck, and the L shape for her collar. 19. Her shoulder is an L shape as well. 20. On the other side, draw in the neck and a rectangle for the collar.

21. From you started the top of her head, draw a small curve for her hand. 22. Sweep the curve down, and end it in another curve. 23. Start from the hair you already have on the side of her head and make the jagged ends. 24. From the last end, make another curve for her arm.

I narrowed it down so we can focus on this part only. 25. Starting with the hand, draw a small J and follow it up with soft curve to finish the hand. 26. Add a long smooth line and end it in a curved point for the elbow. 27. From the bottom of her hand, draw the first curve of her hair. 28. From the curve, add the others you see to finish the hair. 29. There is a small point of hair just to the right of her elbow. Don t forget

this. Now, we re adding in more of the uniform. 30. From the neck, make a curve and then draw an L shape for the left half of the tie. Make the curves you see in the picture for the rest of the knot. 31. You can draw the rest of the tie by lightly making overlapping rectangles and then erasing the lines you don t want to keep. 32. Looking next to the elbow, we ve finished out her arm. 33. The main part of the blouse is a series of curves. 34. To make the creases, draw long and thin V shapes with curved points. 35. We ve started on the other arm by making curves.

36. To make her other arm, use long soft curves. 37. Draw a large angled L for the back of her hand, and connect another L for the first finger. 38. Make straight lines leading down to the fastener. 39. The rest of her fingers are a series of J s. 40. Make the small curve and the M when you get back to the wrist. 41. Keep it up. You re doing fine. Remember to take breaks and walk around. You need to rest your eyes, too.

42. Follow the folds of the blouse by adding the lines you see in the picture. 43. Make a sweeping curve for where the skirt starts. 44. Just like the tie, make overlapping rectangles for the skirt and erase the lines you don t want.

45. The legs are the easy part of the picture. They are nothing but long sweeping curves with open ends at the bottom for the shoes. 46. Make L shapes for the heels of the shoes and add U shapes for the curves of the sole. 47. Two U s make the main part of the shoes. 48. The buckles are curves rectangles. 49. The stripes are just curved lines.

We are back to the beginning. Use the turquoise for the hair, eyes, skirt, and shoes. Use the violet for the tie and stripes. Bonus lesson Start from the beginning and add your accents in the hair and clothing. Use different colors, and see what the end result is.

Chapter 6 The Boys of Anime We can t teach you how to draw Anime without teaching you how to draw the guys. The one to the left is ready for action. His stance, coat, and his sword all scream action. His fiery red hair gives us a clue on his attitude and the smirk means he s itching for someone to start something. He also has his fists balled up. Even though Anime is animation, Anime art can show a lot of action when the character is standing still. Drawing people in a ready position, like the one to the left, is a prime example.

1. Start by drawing the half-circles for eyes and adding the pupils as well. 2. Sketch in the top and bottom lids. This time, we re only using curves for the bottom lids. 3. The eye brows are thicker. 4. A small line is the nose this time. 5. The mouth is still a D shape, but it s larger. This is because it s more open.

6. Start this step by first drawing the rounded hair line on top. 7. Add the cow-lick, the two little curves on the top of the head. 8. Draw the curves for the hair. 9. Add the slight curves for the ears. His hair is short; so, we can see at least part of his ears. 10. Now make the bottom part of his head by drawing two separate curves the meet at the chin.

11. Two curved L shapes make the neck. 12. A large U shape starts the shirt. Don t forget to add the bump from the sword sheath buckle. 13. Directly below the chin, add the marks you see for the collar bones and the base of the neck.

14. We ve added curved lines for details in the hair. 15. From just under the ears, draw the curves that will lead into the collar of the coat. 16. Finish it off by making curved rectangles 17. Don t forget the line going down on the right side of the picture for the collar. 18. From each of the ends of the collar, draw a pair of curves like the ones in the picture. 19. Bring the shoulders out by drawing long curves. Then, draw a second set of curves under the first. 20. Add the circles for the buckles.

21. Add the double circles where the shoulder stops on the right. 22. Draw smaller circles in the buckles and connect them like in the picture, using curves. 23. Draw a slanted rectangle for the leather strap.

can mean a lot. He s really beginning to fill out. Little details 24. On the right, start from the circles on the arm, and draw the lines you see in the picture. 25. Bring the shoulders out by drawing long curves. Then, draw a second set of curves under the first. 26. Make a V to show the crease under the arm. 27. The rest of this part is just making curves for the jacket and shirt. There is slight bump for the belt buckle.

28. Finish off the belt and buckle. 29. Draw the slanted rectangles for the straps of the coat. 30. Remember our J s from the last lesson? It s the same here. They are just a little more square. 31. Draw lines to depict the glove shown. 32. Bring the sleeve of the left side down and cap it off with a sharp curve

for the fist. 33. The lines of the coat are simple and straight. 34. Large V s show the creases in the crotch while a U shape is the fly.

35. The left side of the coat is finished with long slightly curved lines. 36. The left leg mirrors the right. 37. Overlapping rectangles make the bunched denim on the shoes. 38. Squared lines make up the shoes.

39. To the right, we have drawn an octagon, leaving the bottom part off. We ve added a double line going through it. 40. We have two line 41. s leading to a larger octagon. 42. Draw the lines you see to make the straps on the handle.

All there is left is to add the red and violet. Bonus Lesson How would you draw him differently? What colors would you use to make him come alive?

Chapter 7 Poses I Color and facial expression are important for characters in Anime and other forms of animation, but nothing really drives home what a character s intentions are than their pose. A frown on our hero s face above would have told an entirely different story. Our girl on the left is leaning in towards someone. The way her hand is resting on her leg could mean she is flirting, but the way she is holding her head and the coy expression along with the pose shows us she s flirting. How do even start drawing a pose like this?

Remember the T from the face lesson? We are going to expand upon it here and use it for the body to align it correctly. To the left, I have drawn the arrows along our girl s body. This is a simple way to make sure your character s body is lined up properly in the pose you are looking to put them in. If you want to get a better picture, draw circles along your crossed lines and then draw your character from there. If you want to take a different approach to getting more comfortable drawing poses, start with stick figures. I know that takes you back to when you were younger, but nothing better prepares you for drawing characters in different poses than going back to basics and working your way up from there. 1. Start with your basic stick figure. 2. Add ovals for arms and legs and a circle for the head. 3. Draw rectangles for the torso and hip area. 4. Draw the sticks in different poses before adding the other shapes. Once these become second nature, making the shapes into your Anime character will become second nature as well.

Final Words Keeping in practice can be simple, too. Start with your family and friends. Turn them into Anime characters in different poses. Go online and do searches for more inspiration. There are tons of Anime artists out there, but don t get caught up in trying to copy their style. Find your own and run with it. Not everyone has the same style. Learn how clothing drapes on people. This will further help you draw better characters.

Don t stop Keep watching your favorite Anime. Look at Manga. Try drawing animals with human characteristics. Not all anime is based on people. Don t limit yourself. Above all, have fun. Thank you!
