1 Manchester College Education Department Lesson Plan by Daniel Haffner Lesson: Quiz on Slope, Slope-Intercept Form, and Standard Form Length: 70 min Age or Grade Level Intended: Algebra 1 Academic Standard(s): A1.4.1 A1.4.2 Graph a linear equations Find the slope, x-intercept and y-intercept of a line given its graph, its equations, or two points on the line. Performance Objective(s): Given 10 problems, the students will change an equation form point slope to standard form 8 out of 10 times correctly. Assessment: The students will be given 10 problems. The teacher will check to see that the student got at least 8 out of the 10 problems correct. Advance Preparation by Teacher: - Copies of quck quiz - Access to overhead Procedure: Introduction: 1. Have students work on bell work (students already have it), go through it with them answering all the questions that they may have. 2. Collect all the parent signed test and mark their names off of the list. Then collect all bell work from the week. 3. Ask the students to name all the forms of an equation that they have learned so far. (Bloom s: knowledge) 4. Tell them that they have one that works with two points, there is an equation for slope and y intercept and standard form, then there is one for a slope and a single point. Step by Step 1) Follow the outline and work through it with the students. (will be on the projector) (Gardner s: logical mathematical, visual-spatial, verbal-linguistic) 6-4 Point-Slope Form and Writing Linear Equations (page 304) Start with the slope equation. Plug in point (3,4) for (x 1, y 1 ). Then get x and y on opposite sides.

2 Point-slope form y y 1 = m(x x 1 ) Slope is m and (x 1, y 1 ) is a point on the line. Example 1: Graph Using Point-Slope Form Graph the equation y 5 = ½(x -2). TRY THIS: Graph the equation y 5 = -2/3(x + 2). Example 2: Writing an Equation in Point-Slope Form Write the equation of the line with slope -3 that passes through the point (-1, 7). TRY THIS page 305: Write the equation of the line with slope 2/5 that passes through the point (10, -8). Example 3: Using Two Points to Write an Equation Write equations for the line in point-slope form and in slope-intercept form. 1: Find the slope. STEP STEP 2: Use either point to write the equation in point-slope form. STEP 3: Rewrite the equation from Step 2 in slope-intercept form. TRY THIS: a. Write an equation for the line in Example 3 in point-slope form using the point (-1,-5). b. Write the equation that you found in part (a) in slope-intercept form. c.what is true about the equation you wrote in part (b) and the equation in Step 3 of Example 3? Example 4: Writing an Equation Using a Table Is the relationship shown by the data linear? If so, model the data with an equation. STEP 1: Find the rate of change for consecutive ordered pairs. STEP 2: Use the slope and a point to write an equation

If so, model the data with an equation Example 5: Real-World Problem Solving Is the relationship shown by the data linear? If so, model the data with an equation. STEP 1: Find the rates of change for consecutive ordered pairs. STEP 2: Use the slope and a point to write an equation. Temperature Calories burned per day ( F) SUMMARY: There are three forms of equation Slope-Intercept Standard Form Point-Slope Form Form y = mx + b Ax + By = C y y 1 = m(x x 1 ) Closing 1. Work till last 5 minutes of class or about, and then ask question like:. a. Ask the students what equation would they use when given two points and need to find the slope? (Bloom s: knowledge, application) b. What if you were given a slope and point? What if they were given an equation and asked to graph it? Have a student explain their answer. (Bloom s synthesis) c. Ask the students how they would change and equation that was in standard form and turn it into slope-intercept form? Have a different student explain their answer (Bloom s: analysis) 2. Tell the students that we will be finishing 6-4 tomorrow and checking to see if they finished their homework. Adaptations
