6 No (unwelcome) Surprises I wish the location was better. We have locations in neighborhoods all over our cities. I don t have any way to cook it. Well-stocked kitchens. They re beautiful but we don t have a vase. Thoughtful objects for enjoying the things you find as you explore a city. The baby woke up at 3 in the morning because of the time difference. Spaces not rooms, designed for living. There s no great coffee around here. Yes, there is. And it s less than 10 feet away. I want to get lost. We can help. I want to eat gooseneck barnacles in season. We know a guy. There s a line in the lobby. The lobby is on your phone. I wish I could schedule when the maid comes. We put that on your phone too. I d love it if somebody asked me what I d like in my mini-bar. Tell us, we ll get it.

11 Francis Our Story Lucas The summer after his freshman year at McGill University in Montreal, Francis wanted to sublet his apartment while he returned home for summer break. After earning a small profit that summer, Francis realized he had tapped into a significant gap in the market. When he returned to campus in the fall, Francis spent his sophomore year building a website to match vacant student apartments with travelers, partnering with his friend Lucas Pellan to scale the business. They cared deeply about guests experiences and found ways to enhance this whenever possible valeting cars and welcoming visitors with wine. By the age of 21, Francis and Lucas were managing units in 11 cities and had made more than $1 million in revenue. In 2014, their idea was reinforced by a trip to San Francisco where they experienced first-hand the common issues of short-term apartment stays trouble getting in touch with their host, halfeaten food in the fridge, dog hair blanketing the furniture. Moving to a hotel (to save Lucas from allergies) they were faced with generic chain restaurants and a boring, albeit clean, hotel room. And Sonder was born. 11
