1 New way to spend great holidays abroad and adventure! About being an Au Pair. Justyna Kosciolek Electronics and telecommunications October 31, 2014
2 1 Are you ready for an adventure abroad? You are nishing up with some stage of your studies, and don not know exactly what to do? Spend more time in school or university? Or maybe try to look for a summer job? Maybe it is still not so clear to you what you would like to do in the future. Or maybe what you would like the most is rst to see some part of the big world, to have some adventures. I have a great idea for you: go ahead and give it a try! Discover the adventure of Au pairing in a foreign country! Spending time abroad as an Au pair is the best way to nd out more what you want to do with your life. Before you choose the university or during a gap year in your studies, the Au pair experience can be very advantageous and helpful. As an Au pair, you gain a lot of experiences and have opportunity to discover more about your own wishes and about yourself. You can explore the world, discover another culture, learn another language and about being independent, meet many new people who can have an eect on you and your choices. Seek out new challenges and become part of a new family! 2 What does it exactly mean to be an Au pair? The main duty of Au Pair is to help the family through daily routine by providing childcare support what is integrated into the family structure. That is why Au Pair should be treated as a family member. While parents spend usually lots of time working, Au pair takes the children to school, picks them up, prepares meals or helps them with their homework. She keeps the children± rooms tidy, takes care of the laundry. As a part of the family, Au pair can sometimes stay with kids during the night as the babysitter when the need is there and then parents can use their free time to spend some time together, without children. Additionally, an Au pair introduces a new culture into home, foreign language. Obviously, she shares aspects of family's culture and experience. It looks very nice when the Au Pair prepares delicious meals typical for the region she comes from. And Au pair as a guest from the foreign country does not only help to ease the daily routine or to give the children broader cultural horizons. The children also gain an older sister and everything what comes with that they have someone with whom they can play and someone whom they can trust. As it was already said, Au Pair means being another sister in the house on a temporary basis, who helps to look after the children. In return, she gets free access to meals, pocket money, which generally depends on the family and country and integration into the family and culture. It is a two-way street of mutual benet. If it is about details: The Au pair can work a maximum of 30 hours a week because it can be dicult to see other places, The Au pair is entitled to two free days per week, 1
3 The Au pair can babysit only for one night a week, The Au pair in not allowed to have any other job, besides working for the family. 3 More Au Pairs than even before! The number of registered Au Pairs has continuously been growing throughout the past few years. What is interesting that 75% of the Au pairs who registered were from Europe. At rst places there were Spain, France, Germany and Italy. 92% of all registrations were done by young users which means that generally young girls choose to adventure before studies or during holidays while they're free to travel and explore the world. Year Number , , , ,680 Table 1: Number of registered Au Pair in years As can be seen in the bar graphs below, the dominant nationalities for Au pairs continued to be in Western Europe. Growth rates in the three leading countries Spain, France and Italy ranged from 43% to 84%, and there was continuing growth, with Germany and Great Britain maintaining their positions among the top 5 countries for Au pair registrations. Cumulatively, 78% of the Au pairs who registered in 2013 came from countries belonging to the European Union. Figure 1: Number of Au Pairs by nationality in
