He has a small tumbler and a rock saw. He is very interested in going on field trips and doing his own collecting. Be sure and introduce yourself (and wear your name tag). PRESIDENT S MESSAGE April is here and the annual West Seattle Rock Club show is only a few weeks away. Numerous opportunities remain to volunteer and otherwise make yourself useful at the show. Audrey and Lyle Vogelpohl have, again, stepped forward and volunteered to be co-chairs for the show. Please contact them if you would like to help out at the show and have not yet signed up. The show is Saturday and Sunday, April 27 th and 28 th from 10:00 to 5:00 at the Alki Masonic Temple, th Avenue SW, Seattle WA. April has already been a banner month at the O Clair household. My daughter Lucie has finally finished cleaning a large quantity of fluorite crystals collected last October in Arizona. Because she no longer needs our garage to house her cleaning operations, we can use it to park the car again. Hopefully you will get an opportunity to see some of Lucie s specimens at the upcoming rock show. In addition to seeing Lucie s rocks at the show (and not in our garage), I m looking forward to seeing the rocks, minerals, gems and crafts displayed by our members. It is always very nice to see the exhibits prepared by members of our club. Hope to see you at the show. 4 April 2013 West Seattle Petroglyphs Page 4 WEST SEATTLE ROCK CLUB GENERAL MEETING MINUTES March 27, 2013 Business The meeting was called to order by President Michael O Clair. Janet Francisco reported that there were 15 adult members, 4 junior members and 1 guest present. Janet, Elliott Forrest and Peter Welty won the door prizes. Michael asked if there were any changes to the previous minutes and the following were noted; Mark McLaren indicated his last name was printed incorrectly in the last Petroglyphs, and the dealer s name was spelled incorrectly, it should be Doug Polson. Mike Wall is looking for original articles. Please submit articles to Mike by the 2 nd Wednesday of the month. Audrey Vogelpohl introduced new members, Misty and Maceo Tinsley. They each received a name badge, club membership, a WSRC pin and Maceo also received a Future Rockhound of America badge. Michael talked about upcoming field trips. Please refer to Page 10 in the Petroglyphs. Audrey mentioned that the NFMS mid-year meeting is in Kennewick on and there are several shows and a fieldtrip also that weekend you can go to along the way. Audrey announced that numerous badges were earned by junior members. Ian Atkinson earned the Rock and Mineral badge, the Collecting badge and the Earth Process badge. Elliott Forrest earned the Gemstone Lore and Legend badge, Stone Age badge and the Fossil badge. Lucie O Clair earned the Rock and Mineral badge, the Gemstone Lore and Legend badge and the Fossil badge. Bowie Hutchins earned the Earth Resources badge, Earth Process badge and Gold Panning badge. There were other badges earned, but the juniors were not present. Audrey said that members of a New Zealand rock club are coming to the U.S. and need a place to stay from June 4 th 7 th. (They are going on a cruise on the 7 th and will return on the 15th.) They will also need to have a place to stay on the 15 th and will be leaving for Canada on the 16th.. If you would like to host Bev and Dennis Todd while they are in Seattle, please contact Audrey ASAP at avogelpohl@comcast.net or We need volunteers to being refreshments to the June meeting. Please contact Mike Wall or Audrey if you are available to bring refreshments. Lyle Vogelpohl said the dealers for the show are lined up. The Polson s are not going to be able to make it, but instead Danilo and Mindy Navarro (who do macramé and copper around stones) will be taking the Polson s place. Demonstrators at the show include, the WA Prospector s and Gold Panning and Maureen Carlisle from the Burke Museum, the WA State Mineral Council will have maps for sale, and Lyle will do some cabbing. (Juniors can sign up to make one cab). Mark McLaren has posters and flyers available for our show to distribute. We have 124 grabs bags and need more. Show and Tell Lyle Vogelpohl brought a rock lined with white crystals that he got from a show in Hillsboro Audrey Vogelpohl brought two natural geodes from OR, and a sandstone with black iron in material from AZ or UT Diane Christensen brought volcanic ash with a limb cast in it, she got in OR Lucie O Clair brought a rock with quartz and pyrite on it Ian Atkinson brought coral he found on the pathway and some copper ore he got at the silent auction (Continued on page 5)
5 (Continued from page 4) April 2013 West Seattle Petroglyphs Page 5 Elliott Forrest brought some petrified wood from WY Jo Anne Churchman brought some crystals from Red Top Mountain with holes in them Janet Francico- brought a geode with crystals inside and 2 rings of crystals David Clausen brought an agate with indentations, a carnelian agate and a thunder egg from Priday John Spunaugle brought some rocks from Bickleton (near Yakima) Meryl Jeffers brought a Brazilian agate with amethyst crystals and holes in it Mike Wall brought some Youngite from WY and a meteorite from Siberia Russia Ken Schmidt brought a pile of polished rocks that he tumbled Diane Christensen won the drawing Program Past President John Spunaugle presented a slide show of display cases to critique. The cases shown were from first timers to National cases and John pointed out the interesting, and the not so interesting set up of the display cases. Some tips for first timers were to label your material, don t include every rock you have ever collected, use risers for a more interesting case, a mirror in the back ground is sometimes useful and put an informative label on the back wall of the case. Remember, a rock without a label is just a paper weight. Lyle also did a demonstration on how to make and use risers. Risers can be made with Styrofoam. The pink Styrofoam works best. Cover the Styrofoam with material/cloth and replace the cloth when it gets dirty. If you keep the rocks and minerals in a clean baggie you will be able to keep the cloth on the Styrofoam clean for a longer time. When putting the cloth on the Styrofoam, wrap one side around the side of the Styrofoam and secure and it, and then do the opposite side, making sure the material is tight. Then do the opposite sides. (The folded sides should not be seen when viewing the case). Normally the cloth you choose is a neutral color, but depending on the rocks and minerals you are showing, you may want to use a bright or darker color. Display stands can be used and can be made with a shower curtain hook or purchased at a craft store like Joann s or Michaels. The case can get hot inside so make sure the material you use is not temperature sensitive. Also, if you use tape, be aware that it can peel from the heat in the case. The meeting was adjourned, and refreshments were provided by Mike Wall. Respectfully submitted, Diane Christensen, WSRC Secretary JUNIOR PROGRAM Wednesday, April 24 at 6:30 pm Why do we display? What do we display? At this meeting turn in your completed applications for displaying at our show - "Earth's Treasures". Ribbons will be awarded at our May meeting. REFRESHMENTS APRIL Please take note if you are on the hook for refreshments this month. Snacks & Drinks: April Hichens ROADCUT DAVE THE MAN, THE LEGEND by Barry Nevin, WSRC Member I ve always enjoyed a good field trip to a new and exciting location. So it was when, not long after I had joined the West Seattle Rock Club that Dave suggested we make plans to go down to the Madras Powwow and participate in all the field trips, dealer sales, and events on the Fourth of July weekend. The way it was explained, it sounded like great fun to me, so we made plans to ride down together in Dave s car. When the day arrived we made an early start, knowing that all we needed to do was arrive a little before dark to be able to sign in and set up camp on the Ma- (Continued on page 6)
6 April 2013 West Seattle Petroglyphs Page 6 (Continued from page 5) dras fairgrounds. We had plenty of time to do a little hounding along the way. The day was very nice and we made great time all the way to Oregon and over Mt. Hood highway to just outside Madras where Dave noticed a the gently sloped bank on either side of the road and suggested we stop and look. I m always up for a new locality, so we stopped and wandered off in different directions over the sparse dry grass and sage and began looking at the scattered rocks, most of which were the size of a large pebble, but there were some larger pieces scattered among them. It took me awhile to train my eyes, but I did manage to find a few pebble sized pieces of jasper and even very small agate, but soon became a bit weary of the heat and returned to the car for something to drink. I met Dave there and when he opened his sack I was surprised to see he had found a piece of blue agate that was much larger than the average rock at the site. This was not exceptional quality agate, but to me, at this site, it looked like he had just found the Hope Diamond. We continued down the road. I had this picture of that rock emblazoned on my mind! I am nothing if not competitive, and I was awaiting my chance. The next roadcut was even longer and higher and again we set out in different directions. This time I knew what I was looking for and had a dogged determination to find it. After again finding many smaller pieces, I stumbled across my prize for the day, a powder blue agate similar to Dave s. I could hardly wait to gloat about it and began quickly moving in Dave s direction, probably passing over many outstanding specimens along the way. When I got to him I quickly pulled out the agate to proudly show off my find of the day. Dave looked and calmly opened his bag to show me not one, but two pieces of blue-gray and white banded agate, both of which were slightly bigger than mine and much nicer (Grrrr!!). The rest of the trip was fantastic! We both had our moments and returned with so much rock that we were lucky the tires did not blow out. When I went to the following meeting, I was explaining this to a couple of the members, and one of them, Earl, suggested he should be known as Roadcut. The name has been with him for several years now. I m sure you all have a Roadcut Dave in some aspect of your everyday life! APRIL 27/28 THIS IS YOUR SHOW Here are some last minute details on our "Earth's Treasures". At the April 24th club meeting we will be filling the grab bags (many hands makes the job short and sweet). Sign-ups are still needed for hosting on both Saturday and Sunday. Pick your 2-1/2 hour time slot. Prizes for our guests are needed for the "hourly drawing". Volunteers are needed for the Junior Activities area on Sunday. Contact Diane Christensen at Set-up (lay wiring, skirt tables, set cases in place) starts at 10:00 AM on Friday (4/26). Pot-luck on Friday at 6:00 PM - contact April Hichens at on what you are bringing, and any help you can provide. Everything will be provided except your drink of choice. Another couple of members to put in displays would be great. Members can put their displays in the cases starting at 1:00 PM on Friday (4/26). The hall will be available to you as long as needed until 10:00 AM on Saturday when the show opens. Each display will get a "People's Choice" number for prizes provided by our dealers. Guests at the Friday (4/26) potluck will be our dealers and demonstrators. Dealers this year are Ameritool, Crystal Rich, West Coast Gemstones, Natural Gold and Jade, and Danilo Navaro Handmade Jewelry. Demonstrating will be Ed Lehman of the Washington State Mineral Council, Lyle Vogelpohl with his cabbing machine and helped by our club's junior members, Washington Prospectors Mining Association showing you how to pan for gold, David Bernoudy making his own gemstone beads, and our long-time favorite - Maureen Carlisle of the Burke Museum with activities for juniors (of all ages). EVERYONE's help is needed, so contact Lyle or Audrey at or avogelpohl@comcast.net. This is our time to show our neighbors and friends what we have created with our own "Earth's Treasures". 7 April 2013 West Seattle Petroglyphs Page 7 WSRC KID S CORNER The 4 Most Important Steps For Building A Mineral Collection Part 3 Other information worth recording... You don t have to keep information about a mineral that is easily found in a mineral book. Its chemical formula, for example, is easy to find on line or in a book. The crystal system is also basic information that is easy to find. However, there are some special pieces of information that would be worth recording. Here is a brief list. Crystal Form Some minerals can be found in different crystal forms. Pyrite is a great example. Most collectors know it crystallizes in the cubic or isometric system. However, your specimen might be a simple cube. Maybe it s a pyritohedron. Maybe it s a combination of a cube and an octahedra. Maybe it s a cube and a dodecahedron. This detailed information helps identify your unique specimen. Price Paid How acquired (purchase, trade, gift) and from whom Previous Owner(s) Color especially if the color is particularly interesting or unique for the mineral species. Any stories or history behind the specimen Just for the fun of it, here s a story that goes with a sphalerite specimen from my collection. Its collector and original owner was a college professor, A.B. Krom. The story goes that quite unfortunately, Mr. Krom was in the country of Cuba at the time that Fidel Castro and his army took over that country. A native Cuban found Mr. Krom and greeted him with, Raul? Raul was Fidel Castro s brother. Mr. Krom s new Cuban friend thought he was Raul and smuggled him out of Cuba to safety. Of course, Raul Castro stayed in Cuba with his brother, Fidel, and the other soldiers. Today, Raul Castro is the President of Cuba. I haven t been able to verify if this story is true. It was told by a friend of Mr. Krom s. But it is an interesting tale! Written or Computerized? Some of us old folks still like the idea of hand writing our collection catalog information. It feels more personal for some reason. However, most collectors, and certainly all museums, use a computerized system. (Continued on page 8)
8 April 2013 West Seattle Petroglyphs Page 8 (Continued from page 7) Software for a Mineral Collection Catalog There are a few nice software programs you can purchase to keep records of the mineral specimens in your collection. Here is some information to help you: (NOTE: The companies that produce these software programs have not paid Mini Miners Monthly to be mentioned in this issue. The programs have not been tested and reviewed. This is a list to help you find this resource for your collecting experience.) MineralDB (which means Mineral Database ) Really cool. Really professional. Really flexible. Really expensive. This is much more than a cataloging system: it is a complete database of information about the mineral kingdom. (Remember: You can get a complete database of information, images and more FOR FREE at Ed s DB V3 This is another professional cataloguing program with a lot of flexibility. Minerals Free software for cataloguing mineral collections. GneissWare Mineral Catalog This software is very useful. The website indicates there is a limitation with the thumbnail picture feature for the Vista operating system. $49 as of December 10, Carles Millan Mineral Software (Freeware) Get on the internet and search for collection cataloguing software programs. Freeware can be useful but often has limitations. Never purchase any software without your parent s help or permission. (via Mini Miners Monthly, 12/12)
