2 Each summer, thousands of Sheffield students move out of their accommodation at the same time. In the rush to move out, tonnes of waste are left on Sheffield s streets each year - most of which are items that could be reused or food that could be donated. This summer, the Bring it, Don t Bin It programme has set up lots of initiatives to help you donate, recycle, and dispose of your unwanted items in a helpful and responsible way. From free shops to food drives, recycling tips to red sacks - this leaflet has everything you need to know about getting rid of your waste when you move out! Connect with us: sheffieldsu.com/bidbi facebook.com/bidbishef #BIDBI CHARITY DONATIONS WITH THE BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION If you have any good quality clothes, books, CDs, DVDs or small electrical items that you no longer require, you can donate them to the British Heart Foundation using either official bags or any sturdy plastic bags. You can collect these bags from your students union, SHU Accomodation Services or UOS propertywithus. Then take the bags to one of the many designated BHF collection points shown on the map overleaf. DID YOU KNOW? The British Heart Foundation also have furniture shops in Sheffield, and are grateful for donations of items such as TVs, wardrobes and chests of drawers. You can arrange a free collection by calling NO DUVETS OR PILLOWS PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THESE BAGS ON THE STREET AS THEY WILL NOT BE COLLECTED! 3 SHEFFIELD ON A PLATE FOOD DRIVE Are your cupboards still full of food you won t eat? Do you have leftover tins of soup or packets of rice and pasta that haven t been opened? Don t bin this food - donate it to the Sheffield on a Plate food drive! Sheffield on a Plate is a project working to minimise food waste and donate to food banks. Last year, we collected well over an amazing 40 crates of items! These items are donated to food banks benefitting several local charities. From 25th May - 15th June, you can donate your non-perishable food items at any of these sites: Sheffield Students Union Sheffield University Residences Sheffield Hallam Students Union (The HUBS) Plus more collection points around the 2 campuses and beyond. Check out or for more information B.I.D.B.I. - RESIDENCES From 18th May - 15th July, the University of Sheffield will be running a BIDBI scheme to help you donate unwanted items to local charities. You can collect clear bags from the receptions at The Edge, The Ridge and Allen Court. Separate and bag your donations into the following categories: TEXTILES (e.g. clean towels and duvets) CLOTHES, SHOES AND BAGS KITCHENWARE BRIC A BRAC, ORNAMENTS, & HOUSEHOLD ITEMS Take your bags to the collection points shown on the map overleaf. Take any knives and electrical equipment to collection points in receptions at The Edge, The Ridge and Allen Court. Please do not donate TVs, pillows or glasses. For more information visit:

4 RECYCLING Remember to use your blue bins & boxes to recycle as much of your waste as possible: Put plastic bottles, tin cans and glass bottles and jars in either the blue bin or box (it doesn t matter which) Put paper and card in the other RED SACKS Red sacks are waste sacks given just to students, and are a LAST RESORT for extra waste that can t be reused or recycled and won t fit in your black bin. All this waste goes straight for incineration at Sheffield s Energy Recovery Facility, so only use these where ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! You can get 2 red sacks per person if you live in private rented accommodation. Collect your red sacks, along with your British Heart Foundation sacks, from: Your students union Your university s accommodation service (SHU Accomodation Services or UOS propertywithus) A range of helpful letting agents (ask yours if they re helping!) If your house appears on one of the roads highlighted on the map overleaf, place your filled red sacks out for collection between the 22nd of June and the 3rd of July. Red sacks need to be carefully filled and placed for collection on the kerbside between these dates and we will remove them within 48 hours. If you live in an area not marked on the map, please place your red sacks out for collection next to your black bin on its scheduled collection day between these dates. DUVET DASH, 29TH JUNE I M FOR EXTRA WASTE ONLY PLEASE (NOT FOR RECYCLABLE MATERIALS OR ANYTHING THAT COULD BE DONATED TO CHARITY!) Living near Sheffield University Students Union? Want your duvet to go to a good home? Join our Duvet Dash on the Students Union Concourse. For ONE DAY ONLY! You can either bring us your duvets or tweet to arrange collection where available. Your duvets will be given directly to local families in Sheffield. Monday 29th June 9am-4pm (sorry, no duvets outside these times).

5 If your road is highlighted in purple, please place your red sacks on the kerbside on any day between the 22 June - 3 July and they will be removed. If your road is not highlighted, place your red sacks out with your black bin on your regular scheduled collection day during these dates. Victoria Halls - Eldon Street SHARROW COMMUNITY FORUM FREE SHOP In the Sharrow and London Road area, you can donate unwanted items, and pick up new items for FREE at the Sharrow Community Forum Free Shop. Drop items you want recycling or rehoming at the Reception or Blue Sky Cafe at Sharrow Community Forum from 8am-4pm. Put bins, boxes or red sacks out on the street after 6pm on the day before your collection. Take them in by 9am the day after collection. What you can Bring: CLEAN clothes, shoes, bags Books, binders and stationery If you re leaving before collection day, ask your neighbour to help take your bin out and put it back in. Plates, mugs, glasses (nothing that s broken) CLEAN Rugs and curtains Cutlery, pots and pans Knick-Knacks and miscellaneous items Other than the black bins, blue bins and blue boxes only red sacks will be collected. Don t leave any other rubbish on the street. Don t overfill bins or red bags and close them securely
