2 This year there are six Legends, all highly successful fashion designers: Prue Acton, Jenny Bannister, Collette Dinnigan, Akira Isogawa, Joe Saba and Carla Zampatti. Photographer Lucas Allen has cleverly captured each designer s personality in these six striking stamps, designed by Adam Pugh of Spark Studio in Melbourne. Issue Date 21 January 2005 Find out who this year s Australian of the Year is you could ask your teacher. The award is announced every year on the eve of Australia Day celebrations. There is also an award for the YOUNG Australian of the Year! Every year Australia Post celebrates important Australians with the Australian Legends stamp issue and award. Legends in past years have included Sir Donald Bradman, musician Slim Dusty, the last Anzacs, Australian Olympic greats and opera singer Dame Joan Sutherland. Stamp pack 2

3 World Heritage Australia UK Joint Issue These beautiful stamps will be used on letters in Australia and the United Kingdom (UK). And of course, they ll be snapped up by stamp collectors in both countries! The stamps feature eight of the world s most special places: Queensland s Wet Tropics (QLD); Stonehenge, Hadrian s Wall and Blenheim Palace (England); Blue Mountains (NSW); Purnululu National Park (WA); Stone Age ruins in Orkney (Scotland); Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (NT). You may have noticed that the Australian World Heritage Sites are places of great natural beauty, whereas eas the UK sites are places that have been important in shaping the history and identity of the country. This stamp issue will be launched at Pacific Explorer r (See page 6 for more about this exciting Stamp Expo!) The UK is made up of England, nd, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. 4 Activity Book $5.95 Fossil Finder $3.50 Well, this stamp issue sure sounds messy doesn t it. But the creatures on the stamps aren t slimy they actually lived in the slime hundreds of millions of years ago! All of these unusual creatures existed long before the time of the dinosaurs. Some are the ancestors of modern-day snails, worms and jellyfish, while others have left no living relatives. Nobody can be absolutely certain about how these small animals lived and what they looked like. The artist, Peter Trusler, has worked with international scientists to come up with a natural-looking scene based on fossils that have been found in the rocks of the Flinders Ranges. Issue Date 21 April 2005 Fossils are dead plant or animal remains that, over millions of years, have become hard like rocks. Sometimes the original shape of the animal or plant is very well preserved. MAKE YOUR OWN FOSSILS You will need: small objects (coins, shells, leaves or toys) plaster of Paris (available from craft shops) modelling clay (Playdough or Plasticine) mixing bowl 1. Make a thick flat circle of modelling clay for each item you want to fossilise. 2. Press an object firmly into the clay so that it leaves an impression. 3. Prepare the plaster of Paris according to the packet directions (you ll need about two cups for a good fossil collection). 4. Carefully spoon the plaster into each impression so it s completely full. 5. Let the plaster dry for about an hour, then peel the clay away to reveal your fossils! 4

5 CENTENARY OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL 150th Anniversary of the First Australian Coin This stamp celebrates 100 years of Rotary International, which began in Chicago USA in Rotary s 4-way test is a guide we could all use in our lives: Of all the things we think, say or do, is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Issue Date 21 April 2005 The first Australian coin officially minted in Australia was made 150 years ago. Until that time people used coins produced in England or elsewhere. These stamps show the back and front of the gold coin, called a Sovereign, with the head of the reigning Queen, Victoria, on the front. In the background of each stamp is the Sydney Mint Building, where the coins were made. The coins on the minisheet feel like real coins! Do you collect coins? 6 Pacific Explorer to 24 April 2005 Come along and join in all the fun and activities next school holidays! If you happen to be in Darling Harbour, Sydney during April, you re in for a real stamp collecting treat! Pacific Explorer, an international stamp expo, will be on in Sydney (21 to 24 April) the last weekend of the school holidays. There ll be a special youth area with lots of cool things to see and do. What s on for kids? The youth area will have exhibits and activities based on a variety of stamp themes and something for kids of all ages. The five different rooms are; Dinosaurs and prehistoric life Discovery and Australia Animals as pets Space and Technology Discovery room Each area will be hands on where possible, and Philatelic Youth Leaders will be there to answer your wildest stamp collecting questions. On-screen displays from a school competition with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image will also be a feature of the youth area. There ll be lots of interesting stuff for grown-ups, too! With four new stamp issues coming out in April, and all launched at Pacific Explorer, it s the place to be in the world of stamps! Do your friends a favour! 8 BUSH WILDLIFE INTERNATIONAL STAMPS Red kangaroos are a great favourite especially the joeys, which you can sometimes see peeping out of their mother s pouch. Four of Australia s favourite animals star on these stamps. And what better subjects could you choose for letters that are to be posted overseas? Everyone loves koalas, even though they are the drowsiest animals around sleeping or resting for around 20 hours every day! The kookaburra, on the other hand, is famous for its lively character and its unique cackling call. The male lyrebird is a shy bird with a dramatic personality: although generally he hides from people, he loves to sing and show off when trying to attract a mate. Issue Date 7 June

9 Cocos (Keeling) Islands Reef Sharks Cocos in a nutshell! (is that the same as a coco-nut-shell?) Check your atlas and you ll find the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean, roughly 3,000km north-west of Perth. There are 27 coral islands in the group, with a total land area of just 14 square kilometres. Sharks are fascinating creatures that we love to hate! Many shark species are now endangered and need to be protected so they don t become extinct. These stamps feature two types of shark commonly found in the ocean and reefs around the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The Blacktip Reef Shark often swims in the shallows and will sometimes even jump over exposed coral reefs. The Grey Reef Shark generally eats fish, turtles and crustaceans but it will attack if it is excited or annoyed by divers. All these stamps carry the panda logo of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). 11 Sniffer s Letter Hi gang Brrrrh! The weather s getting cold and we need to start putting out our warmer clothes. Maybe we could get new coats designed by this year s Australian Legends in time for winter? We ve also been busy getting ready for the stamp expo, Pacific Explorer, in Sydney. There ll be lots to see and do, so if you live nearby, don t forget to come along to the youth area for some fabulously philatelic facts and feats! We re also excited about the new stamp issue Creatures of the Slime, (Icky especially)! You can also get a Fossil Finder to help you find what s hidden away on the stamp sheet! And there are more stamps about animals and great places to visit, and lots of history, too. You can learn more about our heritage sites and the first coins made in Australia. Congratulations to each of the state winners in the Marking the Occasion drawing competition. There were many different ideas about what the stamps would look like... and so many funny ones!
