3 Meet a Member: Pam Koch by Marge Schwartz During a recent interview with Pam Koch, a new transplant to Arizona, she was asked her why she moved to Sedona and what she likes about rock clubs. My husband, Frank, and I have lived in Sedona only two years. He retired from his company. Frank loves Westerns and loves the beauty in Sedona. So, here we are, says Koch, who adds that she enjoys rock clubs and being active. I was in a rock club in Los Angeles and looked for a rock club when we moved here. I think I just did an online search. I joined in September I loved being on the Board in 2015, too. Rock Clubs offer a lot to do, says Koch, I love the shows and the field trips (and taking pictures.) I picked up some used cutting and polishing machines that I have yet to fire up. It takes a while to get settled after a major move. (Those machines are for sale if anyone s interested.) I ve been beading for at least 20 years now. I started out making bracelets to sell for a nonprofit. I love beading and want to learn how to bead around cabs. When asked when her interest in rocks began, Koch replied, I was always picking up rocks. I don t remember my first rock, but I m sure it was very appealing at the time! I would pick a rock from wherever I was traveling too instead of a commercial souvenir. I have a rock from the white cliffs of Dover that is a treasured piece. Anything that sparkles catches my eye. Oh, and any rock with a white line through it. I don t know what that s about, but it catches my attention. I used to live in Tick Canyon where you can collect howlite. We d wait until after a rainstorm and walk the canyon and pick up what washed down. When asked if she has any experience identifying rocks, her response was, Not even a tiny bit. But I m pretty fair at identifying gemstones. Koch has other talents, too. Many know her because she served as board secretary last year. This year she s the club photographer and Facebook administrator. Koch encourages everyone to like us on Facebook, See Pam Kock, Page 4 Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Newsletter - Page 3

4 Pam Koch from Page 3 and if you re not a member to join. Note: Google search brings up an old Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Facebook page that s defunct. To join us on Facebook, go to Facebook and enter our clubs name in the Search Facebook box. Koch also requests your help. She has various rocks from over the years stashed around the house and would love to figure out a nice way to display them. She would like to hear your display ideas. If you would like to be featured in a future Meet a Member column, contact Marge Schwartz at Will wulfenite become State mineral? HB 2496 was recently introduced by Rep. Mark Finchem (R-District 11) to have wulfenite become the state mineral. Co-sponsors are now being sought in the Legislature and throughout the state to support the bill. This will require hearing from Arizonans who are in support. Let each Representative in the House and Senator Steve Smith (R-Dist 11) know of your support. In addition, let others in the mineral community know their support is also needed to move this bill forward. Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Newsletter - Page 4
