6 Instructions for Cold Process SoapMaking General: Set aside an hour or so (for your first batch) of uninterrupted time. Select your Recipe. Don t switch oils in a recipe without recalculating the amount of Lye you will need. The amount of Lye will vary with each soap oil. (We have SoapMaker Software to help you with this). Put on your Rubber Gloves (Do not use latex) and Face Protector or Safety Goggles. See this page for information about safety equipment: Utensils and Equipment: Spatula for cleaning soap from pot. Long handled wooden or stainless steel spoon for mixing Lye/ Water solution. 8 Cup Glass Container (to mix your Lye/Water solution in). 1 Gallon or larger enamel or stainless steel pan to melt oils and to mix in. Do not use steel or aluminum. You can also use a small polyethylene or polypropylene pail or bucket. Power Wand (Stick Blender) 4 Cup Measuring Cup (to measure your Soap Oils). Thermometer Soaper s Scale Mold Shortening to grease your mold so your Liner Paper will stick. Precut Liner Paper (see tips for lining molds on following page). Large, thick bath towel or blanket to wrap your mold. Paper Towels Lye/Water Solution: Find a well ventilated area to mix your Lye/Water solution. Put on your gloves and face shield. Measure cold water and add to your Lye/Water container. Measure your lye. Slowly add the Lye to your Water while stirring. Always add the Lye to the Water! Stir Lye until all is dissolved. Do not breath in fumes while stirring. Your solution needs to cool to between F (32 C-38 C). Place Lye/Water container in safe area. This solution is caustic and hot so be careful. Keep away from Children and Pets. Should you for any reason accidently splash it on you, flush with lots of running water immediately. 6
7 Instructions for Cold Process SoapMaking Soap Oils: Place your stainless steel or enamel melting pot on very low heat. Place a container large enough to weigh your oils on the scale and zero it out. Weigh your most solid oil first; usually Shortening or Palm. Add this to your pot. Repeat with your next most solid oil. Stir until melted. Add your Liquid oils (Olive) and stir. Turn off and remove from heat. This should put your oils at about F (32 C-38 C). Now take the temperature of your Lye/Water solution. Ideally, you want the two solutions, Lye/Water and oils, to be in this F (32 C-38 C) temperature range. A few degrees here or there are okay. If one is too far off, put the container in the sink, in a Water bath, and add hot or cold Water to correct it. Molds: Make sure your Mold is at room temperature. While waiting for the temperatures of your Lye/Water solution and oils to adjust, is a good time to grease and line your molds. Shortening provides an excellent adherent. Here is a tip on lining your loaf molds: Cut one sheet of Liner Paper long enough to go down one side of the mold, across the bottom and up the other side while still leaving about 2 inches on both ends. Cut two small pieces for the ends of your Mold. To save time in lining molds, you can make a template out of heavy cardboard to pre-cut multiple sheets of Liner Paper. Keep the precut sheets flat under a large book until you need them. Note: In a pinch if you do not have our Liner Release Paper, you can get along with wax paper or freezer paper. Continued on Next Page... 7
8 Instructions for Cold Process SoapMaking Combining Soap and Lye/Water Solution: When everything is at approximately the same temperature (does not have to be exact), add the Lye/Water solution to the soap oils. Take a long handled spoon or your Power Wand (with motor off) and stir while carefully adding the Lye/Water solution. Turn the Power Wand on (making sure the soap mixture is above the blades at all times) and mix while moving it around in the pot. Continue mixing until you come to Trace. Trace is when your soap mixture thickens to the point that when you dribble a little of it on the surface of the mixture, it stays there for a few moments. Turn motor off before removing Power Wand from Soap Mixture. When you have reached a thin trace, you can add your colorants Poured Mold: and scents. Mix quickly and well. Then pour into your Lined Mold. Place a sheet of Liner Paper over top of the Mold and wrap Mold De-Molding: with a heavy towel or blanket. Be sure to wrap all sides. Place the Mold in a non-drafty location safely away from children and pets. In about 12 hours uncover your Mold and check your soap. If it looks solid, then you may de-mold. If the middle is still mushy, you may need to wait a few more hours. If so, wrap it back up and wait. When you de-mold, wear your gloves. To de-mold, simply grab the 2 inch ends and lift your loaf of soap from the Mold. Place the loaf of soap on a sheet of Liner Paper or Wax Paper and allow to rest for a few more hours unless it is hard enough to cut. Cutting your Soap: Cut your soap shortly after you de-mold. It should still be soft but firm enough to lift and hold. Experience will teach you this. Using the soap cutter you purchased, cut your loaf into bars and place the bars onto a Soap Drying Tray to complete the curing process. Soap should be cured for about 3 to 4 weeks and stored in a place away from direct sunlight and drafts. 8
