1 Target Board 1 The teacher points to each number/digit and the children identify it. How many numbers are on the first line, second line? How many numbers are in column 1, 2, 3, 4? Add all the numbers in each row/line. How many even/odd numbers are there on each line/column? List the numbers on each line/column in order from the smallest to largest and from the largest to smallest. This could also be done as a written exercise or as independent tasks. The teacher points to any number and asks the children what number comes before or after it on the number line. For example: Point to 5. What number comes before 5? (4) Point to 7. What number comes after 7? (8) What number comes 2 before, 2 after, 3 before, 3 after, etc. Add 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, etc. to each number (counting forwards). Take 1, 2, etc. away from 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Take 3 away from 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Take 5 away from starting at 5. The teacher tells the children where each number is situated. Then repeat with other numbers. For example: Where is the number 9? (below 5, above 4, in between 0 and 3, in the second row and the second column) The teacher asks the children about specific numbers. For example: Tell me all you know about the number 5. (It is a 1-digit number, it is an odd number, it is before 6 and after 4, it is the number of days we attend school, 4 and 1 make 5, it is half of 10) 270 Planet Maths Teacher Resources 1st Class
2 Target Board 2 The teacher asks the children to explain where each number is. For example: Where is the number 2? (it is in the third row, second column, it is under 20 and above 12, it is in between 1 and 17) The teacher can use questions from the previous target board. For example: Identify each number. Name 2 numbers that make 10. Find 1-digit numbers on each row column. Find 3 numbers that make 10. (7, 2, 1) How many are there on each line/column? List 4 numbers that make 10 (1, 2, 3, 4) Find 2-digit numbers on each line/column. Show 2 numbers that make 20. How many are there on each line/column? Call out 3 numbers that make 20, Add 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, etc. to each number. List 4 numbers that make 20. Add 10, 20, 30, etc. to each number. Identify odd and even numbers on each line/ How much do I need to add to each number column. to get to 20? List numbers from smallest to biggest and Find 2 numbers with a difference of 2. biggest to smallest, on each line/column and Find 2 numbers with a difference of 3, 4, 5, from the whole page. etc. Add all the numbers on each line/column. The teacher asks the children about specific numbers. For example: Tell me all you know about the number 20. (it is a 2-digit number, it is made with two 10s and 0 units, it is half of 40, it is double 10, there are five 20s in 100, it is bigger than 10 and smaller than 30) Target number The teacher writes a target number on the board, e.g 15. First, the children have to say what operation they would use to reach 15 from each number on the board, e.g. plus/minus (18 will be minus, 3 will be plus). When they are clear what operation to use, ask them to do the sum: 18 minus 3 = 15, 3 plus 12 = 15. This target activity can be extended. For example: For the target number 15, the teacher points to different numbers on the target board and asks the children questions such as: How can I get to 15 in 1 step from 10? (add 5) How can I get to 15 in 2 steps from 10? (add 7 and take away 2) Double it and take away 5. (15) More able children could try to get to a target number in 3 steps. 3 Target Board 3 X Sample questions for the board: Identify each amount. What is the largest amount on the board? Identify each amount for which there is a single coin. What do I need to add to each to make 1? How much change would I get from 50c, 1, etc. if I spent each amount from the board in a shop (using suitable numbers). Use questions from previous pages where suitable. Double each amount. The teacher points to relevant numbers and ask how many 5c, 10c, 50c, etc. there are in each. For example: 15c = 3 x 5 (for 5s) 10c = 1 10 (for 10s) 50c = 10 5 (for 5s) 50c = 5 10 (for 10s) 50c = 1 50 (for 50s) The teacher has a target amount and asks the children questions about it. For example: What operation do I need to use to reach 20c from every other number - add or subtract? What coins could I use to make 65c? (50c, 10c, 5c) 272 Planet Maths Teacher Resources 1st Class
4 Target Board 4 Repeat questions from previous pages. For example: Find odd and even numbers on the target board. Add a variety of numbers to each number on the target board. Subtract a variety of numbers from each. Total the numbers in each row, column. Describe where each number on the target board is (tens and units). Say what you know about each number. Sample questions for the board: How many tens and units in each number? Add the digits of each number together. Can you make a subtraction sum using the digits of each number? What do I need to add to each number to reach the next 10? What do I need to add to each number to reach 100? Double each number. Which numbers can I divide evenly? (numbers that end in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) Point to each number and tell me what number is 2 greater/less than each number Which is the biggest/smallest number on the page/in each line/in each column? Target number What operation do I need to use to get to my target number, e.g. for the target number 80: 59 (first number on board): I have to add 21. Strategies = = = = = 80 Mystery number The teacher gives 2 or 3 clues for the children to guess the mystery number, using language with which they are familiar, e.g. for the mystery number 22: It is an even number.
