4 Editor s Note Polymer Clay is a medium often used for crafting. Nowadays, crafters are using the material to create handmade accessories. In this Special Issue of DIY Beading Magazine, we ll be featuring a talented Polymer Clay Artist from Southern California who ll teach you how to use Polymer Clay in creating Halloween figures that you can use as charms, ornaments and accessories. 5 Silly Spider Polymer Clay Tutorial DIY I adore Halloween, and wanted to create a simple "spooky themed" polymer clay tutorial that would be fairly simple to make. (okay, so she's not so spooky...) Have fun, and good luck! BLOG: MEMBERSHIP: DIY BEADING MAGAZINE ISSUE

6 As always, if children will be doing the creating, I recommend they use Bake Shop Clay by Sculpey; however, any Sculpey brand Polymer Clay is safe for children. Polymer clay can be found in your local craft store. Remember to keep all sharp tools away from children. Read and follow all package directions on the back of your polymer clay packaging. You will need: Polymer clay, cutters, thick yarn needle or toothpick, long razor, patience & love ;) BLOG: MEMBERSHIP: DIY BEADING MAGAZINE ISSUE

7 1. Condition (squish & soften) clay before using & wash hands between using each color. 2. Using a long razor, or kemper cutters... split clay into sections. You need 8 even pieces for spider legs, and one larger piece for the body. BLOG: MEMBERSHIP: DIY BEADING MAGAZINE ISSUE

8 3. Roll all sections into individual balls, and the 8 leg portions into long "legs". Place legs into formation as shown in photo "A", making sure legs connect as shown. 4. Place spider body on top, center. Using your palm, squish spider body just enough so there is a good connection. Try not to flatten the body (dead, squished spider-oops!) 9 5. Using a kemper cutter or other tool, give your spider a smile. I like giving my creations crooked smiles ;) 6.With a pin or needle tip, give the corner of his smile some character by defining his crooked smile. 7. Using a shape tool or pencil eraser, create sockets for your spiders eyes. BLOG: MEMBERSHIP: DIY BEADING MAGAZINE ISSUE

10 8. Cut & roll two identical spheres for eyeballs, using white or a fun neon color clay. Pressing eyes into sockets. Careful not to leave fingerprints. 9. Using a thick needle or toothpick, make pupil sockets. The more crooked & googley, the better! Create two black pupils, set them into the spiders eyeball and press. 11 10. Gently slide razor underneath spider, lifting him off surface. Careful not to hurt him, or yourself, He's looking pretty cute! 11. Bend spiders legs, using your thumb and forefinger. Press each end of leg into work surface, giving the spiders legs some shape. Or, if you would rather call them, feet! BLOG: MEMBERSHIP: DIY BEADING MAGAZINE ISSUE

12 12. To make a girl spider, give it a cute bow using a heart shaped kemper cutter. 13. After placing two hearts above spiders eyes, take thick needle or toothpick and press into bow as shown. BLOG: MEMBERSHIP: DIY BEADING MAGAZINE ISSUE

13 Roll a tiny bit of clay into the size & shape of rice, placing it between the hearts, making a bow center. 14. With a thick needle or other tool, press ends of "rice" to finish off the bow. 15. Using a long razor, slide and lift spider off work surface. The bottom of your spider should look like one solid piece. Into the oven he/she goes! BLOG: MEMBERSHIP: DIY BEADING MAGAZINE ISSUE

14 Baking Instructions: - Bake clay on 2-3 layers of parchment paper, on cookie sheet. - Following baking instructions on polymer clay packaging, set oven accordingly. - Bake spider for approximately 30 minutes, in a well ventilated room. Keep all clay, tools and supplies away from food and food surfaces. - Allow spider to cool for 15 minutes, or longer; before handling. I turned my spider into a Halloween statement ring...viola! 32 About the Author I like to give a brief introduction about myself - the founder of the online jewelry making magazine - My name is Jane Chew a.k.a. XQDesigns. I started XQDesigns few years back and it has became my creative outlet which I can t get from my day job at that time. I founded Handmade-Jewelry-Club in 2008 with the aims to gather and share jewelry making tips and tutorials that I discovered from the internet. I have subsequently published my own tutorials and lessons and found lots of fun in developing tutorials and sharing my knowledge. Jane Chew In 2010, I started a directory website called DIY Lessons. This website allows readers to view videos I found from the web apart from sharing my own tutorials where it allows my buyers to download free and paid tutorials instantly once they complete the purchase transaction. I am currently working with jewelry artists and jointly developing tutorials with them based on their designs. To make our tutorials more affordable and exclusive for loyal customers, I started DIY Beading Club in 2011 and offer monthly subscription plan to our fans. I am getting very excited about all these opportunities and would really like to work with more artists to turn their knowledge into lessons through this club.
