4 Second AMAP International Symposium on Environmental Pollution o f the Arctic. Rovaniemi, 1-4 October 2002 Persistent Organic Pollutants in Sediments of the Pechora River System: The Preliminary Results of Investigation in Frame of SPICE Project Vladimir Dauvalter Institute o f the North Industrial Ecology Problems (INEP), Kola Science Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences, 14 Fersman St., Apatity, Murmansk region, Russia Introduction SPICE (Sustainable Development of the Pechora Region in a Changing Environment and Society) is the multidisciplinary research project funded for a period of 3 years ( ) by the INCO- COPERNICUS 2 Programme of the European Commission (contract nr. ICA2-CT ). The overall objective of the SPICE project is to development of the Pechora region (Northeast European Russia). The first task for the project is to analyse the current situation of society and environment. INEP is included in research group B: Terrestrial and Aquatic Pollution, and coordinates Workpackage 5: Aquatic pollution, based on surface water and sediment analyses. The aim of this workpackage is to assess water pollution (heavy metals, hydrocarbons and persistent organic pollutants) in Pechora region, including general estimation of distribution and transport of polluting substances through the riverine system and into the Barents Sea. Materials and Methods Investigated Fildsetes (F1-F8) situate on the different part of the Pechora river basin: FI - Uhta river basin, F2 - Belaya Kedva river basin, F3 - Ortina river basin, F4 - Neruta river basin, F5 - Svetly Vuktyl River basin, F6 - Maly Patok river basin, F7 - Kolva river basin, F8 - More-Yu river basin. Sediments of the Pechora delta were also investigated. Sediments for persistent organic pollutant contents were taken by grab sampler in the investigated rivers and lakes. Concentrations of persistent organic pollutant in the sediments were analyzed by gas-fluid chromatography. Results and Conclusions Concentrations of organochlorine compounds (OCC) were below the detection limits for almost all compounds and in almost all analysed sites (Table 1). Detectable amounts of hexaclorbenzol, y- hexachlorcyclohexane, DDE, DDD, DDT were instrumentally determined in sediments of Fielfsites F3 (collected in 2000) and F6. The concentrations of OCC were much lower, than the values of interim freshwater sediment quality guidelines and probable effect levels for freshwater sediments specified in Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines (Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environmental, 1999). Therefore, it was established, that the sediments of the Pechora River system in the investigated Fieldsites were not polluted by organochlorine compounds. These investigations confirmed the results of earlier studies of the Pechora River system (Lukin et al., 2000). Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of the investigated Fieldsites were higher than organochlorine compounds, but the concentrations of some PAHs (acenaphthylene, biphenyl, acenaphthene, anthracene, benz(a)pyrene, benzo(a)pyrene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, indeno(123cd)pyrene, benzo(gh)perilene) were below or close to the detection limits (Table 2). The highest concentrations of the PAHs were found for naphthalene and 2- methylnaphthalene, which exceeded the values of the interim freshwater sediment quality guidelines (ISQG) and probable effect levels (PEL) for freshwater sediments specified in Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines (Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environmental, 1999). Maximum contents of naphthalene were observed in sediments of Fieldsites F3 (F3-2 and F3-5) and F7 (F7-4, F7-5 and F7-6). These values exceed PEL; therefore it is possible to anticipate some expectable responsible reactions from the water organisms. Close to these Fieldsites there are the oil- P-P15
5 Second AMAP International Symposium on Environmental Pollution o f the Arctic. Rovaniemi, 1-4 October 2002 gas exploitation company, which bum out the redundant and associated gas, that may be probably the explanation of high concentrations of naphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene. Concentrations of other PAHs did not exceed the values of ISQG and PEL. According to environmental classification system of Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (Molvaer et al., 1997) values of PAHs sum less than 300 jug/kg in sediments correspond to background class, values in the range of ig/kg - to moderate pollution class. Therefore, sediments of Fieldsites F3 (F3-2 and F3-5) and F7 (F7-3, F7-4, F7-5 and F7-6), as well as sites F6-2 and F8-5 were moderate polluted by PAHs. Other sites were qualified as background water objects. Acknowledgements The investigations were supported by the INCO-COPERNICUS 2 Programme of the European Commission (SPICE project, contract nr. ICA2-CT ).
