4 ANTLER BASKET Wed, May 14 Instructor: Joan O Brien All skill levels Material Fee: $25.00 At the retreat we will be weaving this antler basket using twisted seagrass with palm inflorescence and/or twisted coconut as accents. The framework for the basket will be completed at the May program when we will drill the antler and glue the spokes in place. If you cannot be present at the May meeting I will be available Tuesday night (May 13 th ) so you can drill your antler and glue your spokes then. In this class you will learn the techniques for antler drilling as well as how to determine the shape for your antler basket and spoke placement. Each antler is different so each basket will be distinctive. You may bring additional materials to use as highlights but they must be very flexible. As well as the weaving (randing) you will learn when and how to add ribs and how to pack. To control your basket shape you will also learn when and how to use braces using #10 round reed. At the finish we will use large wooden beads to balance the basket. Materials provided: Deer Antler, #6 round reed for spokes and ribs, seagrass, palm inflorescence, twisted coconut cordage, #10 round reed for braces, beads, glue. Supplies you must bring: Drill, drill bits-1/8, 3/16, 7/32, scissors, twist ties or pipe cleaners, pencil, spray bottle, awl, needle-nose pliers, clothes pins. TWINED BEAD WORKSHOP Wed, May 14 Instructor: Polly Jacobs Giacchina All skill levels Material Fee: $15.00 The workshop will concentrate on small format weaving using the basketry technique of twining. Distinctive individual beads will be created with colors chosen by the student. Varied patterns and textures can be incorporated. Waxed linen, embroidery floss and the other components needed, will be supplied. Student brings: small sharp scissors and individual task light with extension cord Great Basin Basketmakers March

5 CHECKERBOARD BASKET Thurs, May 15 Instructor: Karen Rosselli All skill levels Material fee is $25.00 We will create a lovely, round reed, checkerboard basket. Bring your regular weaving tools, soaking bucket, and spray bottle. I will have spaced-dyed reed as well as solid colors along with plain reed so you will have a choice of several color combinations. This basket has a wide variety of weaves and you will be able learn some new techniques to bolster your basket making skills. This is sure to be a fun-filled class and you will come away with a useful and beautiful basket. PEOPLE RATTLE WORKSHOP Thurs, May 15 Instructor: Polly Jacobs Giacchina All skill levels Materials Fee: $15.00 Learn the basketry technique twining or push your established skills to a new level. We will concentrate on a dimensional design forming the body. Embellishments will complete the figurative form, weaving with large hemp. All materials will be included. You may bring your own small beads and found objects to personalize your project (optional) Great Basin Basketmakers March

6 Message from the President I was trying to think of something clever to write this month when, low and behold, I got a delivery of great pictures from Nancy s Horsehair Bracelet class. I know everyone would much rather see a few of those instead of reading my message, so here they are. Thanks Nancy! Enjoy, Susan The Group Sande with a horsehair necklace Katherine Great Basin Basketmakers Meeting Minutes Sue Ann and Sandy Feb 6, 2014 at 1st Congregational Church Submitted by Marge Purdy Meeting called to order 11:05 am by Susan Lester.
