2 WELCOME WE CREATE DESIGNERS We are delighted you have chosen to study with us and warmly welcome you to UCA at Farnham. The Master of Arts in Textiles at UCA Farnham guides design professionals and graduates in the further development of their skills and experience within the craft industries. These courses are for highly motivated and talented people who wish to work at the forefront of their creative discipline. The programme is a project led and studio-based course and with tutorial guidance, students will create individual excellence through rigorous research including practical and theoretical investigation. A wide range of approaches are encouraged, from the traditional specialist trades, to the contemporary influences of art, craft, design and technology. philosophy which will allow you to sustain a portfolio of design practice. You will evaluate the local and global language of your specialist design and consider ways of engaging new audiences and product opportunities. We expect you to develop an individual and progressive approach in ways of working. You can participate in live projects, competitions, and professional practice. Graduates emerge from the College in Farnham with the confidence to establish themselves in the field as designer-makers, practitioners, specialists and industrial designers. Kind regards, Rebecca Skeels Post Graduate Subject Leader for the School of Craft and Design The departments have some of the widest range of specialist facilities in the UK covering jewellery, metalwork, forgework and silversmithing; textile weave and print, glass blowing, fusing and slumping, ceramic throwing, hand building and casting and hand craft, machine and digital technologies. The department provides a wonderful environment to experiment and explore in pursuit of personal expression. Experimentation with non-traditional materials, such as rubber, perspex, ceramics and glass, and with radical forms and altered scale, is encouraged and well supported with the departments it runs alongside You will take part regularly in constructive critical debate concerning personal research avenues, communicating research ideas and design in ways that are appropriate to professional leadership. It will be beneficial to bring these items with you. Other equipment and materials will be required and will depend on the project and personal path you wish to undertake. I advise you bring any hand tools you may have in relation to your pathway, however the University does have enough equipment for you to use while you develop your work. -Sketch book minimum size A4 -Selection of drawing implements and materials; such as pens, pencils, crayons, paints, and charcoal -Glue -Scissors or scalpel -A4 file and plastic sleeves -Lined paper pad and pens -Small note book. LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL This year students from the undergraduates and postgraduate courses in the School of Craft and Design will be taking part in the London Design Festival: The show will be held at the Oxo Gallery in London. The South Bank and in particular the Oxo Tower Wharf hosts many design, arts and crafts shops. The Oxo Tower Gallery space is sited at the front of the building and acts as an introduction to the other exhibitors space in the area making it a fabulous opportunity for UCA to have a selection of work from recent graduates across the School of Craft and Design undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and a great place to visit and see newly emerging makers, artist in residence from the school and tutors. 5 RESEARCH CENTRES The School of Crafts & Design includes three leading research centres, these are home to internationally renowned experts in their fields. Much of our research in craft and design is considered of International Standing and this prestigious benchmark includes: CRAFTS STUDY CENTRE Established in 1970, The Crafts Study Centre, is a fully accredited museum, safeguarding and displaying a national collection of modern and contemporary crafts. It directs and facilitates research into the history of crafts in the UK, and hosts international researchers working on the detailed study of the extensive collections. The centre has played an important role in publishing studies on craft makers, craft organisations and practices, often related to its contemporary exhibition programme. For details of forthcoming exhibitions please see the website: THE CENTRE FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN The Centre for Sustainable Design (CfSD) established in 1995, has engaged in a range of international research projects and knowledge exchange initiatives on product sustainability and sustainable innovation and design. It offers bespoke services and training to companies, consultants, governments and academia across the world. CfSD also hosts the annual international and interdisciplinary Sustainable Innovation conference series, now in its eighteenth year (2013). Since 2009, the Centre has worked with over 600 SME s on ecoinnovative product/services/technologies. CfSD also provides a range of free information through its website: with specific details on training, research, projects and conferences. THE ANGLO-JAPANESE TEXTILE RESEARCH CENTRE The Anglo-Japanese Textile Research Centre was established in It concentrates on the investigation of the use of textiles as an expression of cultural identity, particularly in the UK, Japan and increasingly further afield. Research undertaken by the AJTRC has pioneered and influenced modes of cross-cultural and intergenerational exchange through textile practice.
