1 Activities report of Central Asian Crafts Support Association Prepared by Dinara Chochunbaeva Ex-President of CACSA Central Asian Crafts Support Association - CACSA was established in 2000 with the purpose to support craftsmen and develop traditional crafts in the region. Association united 17 artisans groups from five countries of Central Asia. In 2004 the number of artisans groups grew up to 55. At present day CACSA has 71 member-organizations from six countries. 1

2 Member-organizations of CACSA (data for December ) Kyrgyzstan - 37 Uzbekistan - 18 Kazakhstan - 7 Tajikistan - 4 Turkmenistan - 4 Mongolia - 1 Mission: Safeguarding, revival and development of crafts in Central Asia, consolidation of efforts of artisans aimed at mutual enrichment of cultures and prosperity of people, and their integration into the world market. Regulations: At present time the Association uses the Rules and regulations on membership adopted by the General Assembly of CACSA in November Activities: Within activities of CACSA were focused on the development of craft sector and creation of the craft market in the region, on the promotion of Central Asian crafts production and integration it into the international market, as well as in the attracting the new generation of craftsmen. Within CACSA implemented over fifty projects. 2

3 Project Bank of raw materials Raw Bauta material supported by Aid to Artisans, The necessity of this project was directly connected with the export related activities, which developed successfully in the region, especially in Kyrgyzstan. As a rule, artisans do not have enough funds to purchase the needed raw materials to produce items to order, and the orders are usually paid several months after the accomplishment of the order. The raw material bank gave raw materials to artisans for credit and thus provides them with significant assistance for timely and qualitative implementation of the orders. In 2005, the Raw materials bank credited raw materials to: 41 artisans felt; 37 artisans silk; 32 artisans dyes. International Felt Symposium: 2005, 2007 Since 2001 CACSA is the organizer of the biennium International Felt Symposium in Kyrgyzstan. The Symposium program includes presentations of the participants, exchange of experience, visiting of crafts workshops, cultural program and excursions. The Symposium is attended by participants from different countries of the world. 3

4 Seal of Excellence for Handicraft Products in Central Asia The UNESCO project for the region of Central Asia was launched in 2004 with the support of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Office in partnership with the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty. This project has the goal to increase the quality of handicraft products of Asian artisans and to promote them to international market. In there were 387 applications received from craftsmen of six countries of the region, 102 items of them were certified by the International Jury as products of the highest quality. From 2005 the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, USA provided annually a special booth for UNESCO Seal awarded products from Asia Pacific. The UNESCO Crafts Prize Project supported by UNESCO, craftsmen from 20 countries of Asia Pacific region participated in this contest. 1-st place Asahi Group for the embroidered susanne, Kyrgyzstan; 2-nd place Rasuljon Mirzahmetov, for the reviving of the velvet ikat fabric, Uzbekistan; 3-rd place Galina Turdyeva, erke Jumagulova, Kyrgyzstan for the felt dolls Central Asian people and Mantu Chandra, India, for the ceremonial bamboo basket. The Awarding ceremony was held during Asia Pacific Regional Assembly within the International Silk and Spices Festival, in May 2005 in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. 4

5 Cultural Diversity and Dialogue of Cultures in Central Asia Festival of Central Asian cultures at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris supported by UNESCO, The Festival took place on 24 May 1 June 2005 at the UNESCO Headquarters. 60 artisans and designers from the countries of Central Asia and Mongolia participated. After the 10-day Festival in Paris, the Central Asian Crafts Fair was organized in Brussels at the Eurasia Gallery, in which participated 25 representatives of CACSA. Researches: Experts of CACSA made researches on crafts development situation within and outside of the region: Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Turkey, Afghanistan. Based on that some recommendations on trainings for the craftsmen and marketing of the crafts production were worked out. 5

6 Trainings: There were over 100 trainings for different groups of craftsmen within Central Asian region on design, marketing, crafts technologies. Trainers of CACSA were invited to train craftsmen abroad: to Hungary, Italy, Turkey, Afghanistan, UK, Russia, USA, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Georgia. Craft-fairs: CACSA itself and its member organizations during last four years organized about 20 regional craft fairs, in which more than 1500 craftsmen took part, and more than 40 craft fairs in the countries ti of fthe region. 6

7 Integration into international market: Since 2004 about 150 craftsmen from member-organizations of CACSA participated in many craft fairs outside the region: in Turkey, Hungary, Izrael, Germany, USA, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, France, Italy, Netherlands. Participation of Central Asian craftsmen in Folk Festival in Budapest, International Arts and Crafts Fair in Jerusalem, Santa Fe International Folk Art Market in USA, Messe-Belinf, Artigiano in Fiera in Milan, Maison et Objet in Paris etc. became for them an ordinary event. 7

8 CACSA invested into cultural tourism development in the region by organizing since 2005 the Annual International Festival OIMO in Issyk-Kul lake, Kyrgyzstan. Publications During four years promotion of the Central Asian Crafts products was done through publication of catalogs, video-films, calendars, maps and directories. Also, some methodical materials for trainers on crafts technologies, were published. 8
