The sector comprises small companies that are highly international, expanding through market diversification and innovation. R&D+i projects are undertaken by 85% of companies. SPANISH MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT FOR THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY 1. THE SPANISH MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT SECTOR FOR THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY The textile machinery sector encompasses a series of equipment from manual sewing machines through to complex looms, including all their components, spare parts and accessories. The sector is divided into the following subsectors: - Spinning machinery - Weaving machinery - Knitwear machines - Finishing machinery - Clothing machinery 2. SPANISH SUPPLY The Spanish textile machinery sector comprises 69 companies with sales in excess of 245 million. Small and medium sized companies with less than 50 employees account for 90% of this sector that generates more than 2,600 direct jobs. This explains its capacity to easily and quickly adapt to the different trends in the market. EVOLUTION OF THE SECTOR Companies Employment 2,270 2,321 2,650 2,610 Sales Consumption Figures in millions Source: Amec / Amtex The sector is strongly committed to R&D+i which allows it to compete globally with the sector s leaders. Research projects are carried out by 85% of companies in joint collaborations with technology centers and internationally renowned universities that specialize in the different textile subsectors. Spain is the leader in technical textiles, the result of its commitment to R&D+i. The sector has invested significantly over the last ten years spending 4.60 billion in capital goods and new facilities and 2.30 billion in research and development projects in general. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION Companies % Sales Catalonia Valencia region Madrid Basque Country Galicia TOTAL Source: Amec / Amtex 1

3 Geographically, production is concentrated in just a few regions, but especially in Catalonia (64%), the region of Valencia (3%) and Madrid, which is home to just two companies but accounting for 32% of total sales. EVOLUTION OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE SECTOR The most important subsector in Spain is dyeing and finishing with 32 companies, followed by spinning machinery with 20 companies. COMPANIES BY SUBSECTOR Spinning machinery Weaving machinery Knitting machinery Dyeing and finishing machinery Clothing machinery Source: Amec / Amtex Independent of the number of companies, each subsector has significant capacity to develop technological innovations. The most important innovations by subsector include: Dyeing machinery: the digitalization of machinery has been highly significant in terms of technical development, specifically paste or ink jet printing and important advances in precision and speed. There has been a technological fine-tuning in this area, of concept and processes, achieving maximum efficiency with minimum water use and reactive agents and the minimum effects on the cellulose. Spinning machinery: there are a large number of Spanish manufacturers in this subsector in which the following equipment is important: torsion frames, compacting spinning systems for short and long fibers, twisting machines, tearing machines, garneting machines, rotational cutting machines, and machines for hanking, braiding and technical yarns. Weaving machinery: the following global advances developed by Spanish companies and/or universities/technology centers are all significant: Rereeling machines, automatic reeling machines, electronic sectional warping machines with visual width control, circular knitting machines for fine gauge sweaters and clothing inspection by artificial vision. Spain also leads this subsector for software development and competes with the leading international companies in this area. Clothing machinery: Logistics and the development of CAD/CAM design tools are important in this field. The continuous investment in research and development has endowed the sector with a series of strengths that guarantee its competitiveness at an international level, principally due to: A high level of technology. A strong price-quality ratio. A high degree of flexibility in producing equipment based on each client s requirements. Versatility. 2

4 FOREIGN INVESTMENT IN THE SECTOR Foreign investment in the sector, specifically in the textile industry; the clothing and fur industry; and the leather, leather goods and footwear industry, combined exceeded 60 million in the last three years. There was also significant growth in the last period. INTEGRATION WITH OTHER SECTORS The majority of companies currently use mechanization from third parties and outsource the manufacture of parts to specialized workshops. Companies generally specialize in product R&D+i and in the subsequent machine assembly phases. In the last ten years, technical textiles have become prominent. Textile machinery manufacturers have witnessed a change in traditional textiles and this has led them to diversify their products, modifying machinery to work with technical textiles, linking the sector to the new requirements for construction, the automotive industry, hygiene and medicine, agriculture, packing and packaging, chemicals, etc. CRITICAL COMPETITIVE FACTORS Market diversification, to continue generating new demand for equipment, creates the need to constantly adapt to the requirements of each destination, requiring greater organizational flexibility. When combined with the individual characteristics of the equipment and machinery, Spanish supply becomes more competitive and its after sales service guarantees an appropriate maintenance service for machinery. NATIONAL TRADE FAIRS WITH INTERNATIONAL SCOPE Spanish international trade fairs are meeting places between buyers and sellers, technicians and analysts of trends, and highlight the interdependencies between the textile and clothing machinery subsectors. FAIR EXPOMATEX LOCATION Barcelona (Spain) International Textile Machinery Exhibition Location: Fira Barcelona Gran Via M2 - Data from the last edition: 6,972 visitors, 446 exhibitors, 22,148m2 of exhibition space 3

6 3. FOREIGN TRADE In 2004 Spanish textile and clothing machinery exports totaled 172 million. Since 2001 there has been an accumulated year on year decline of 16%. In the same year Spanish exports accounted for 70% of total sales, underlining the significance of the sector s exports. This export ratio has remained constant in recent years and is not part of a temporary strategy but demonstrates the sector s commitment to exporting which has seen it achieve eleventh position in the world exporters ranking. The top five destinations for Spanish exports in 2004 were TURKEY, ITALY, INDIA, PORTUGAL and MOROCCO. These counties accounted for 32% of Spanish textile and clothing machinery exports in The top ten purchasers accounted for 53% of Spanish sales. The EU has been the principal destination market for Spanish exports. In 2004, 42% of Spanish textile machinery was exported to Europe, although there were regional differences. Although exports to the EU s traditional markets have declined, exports to the new enlargement countries have increased considerably. From 2000 to 2004 purchases by Asia grew constantly by an accumulated 114%; purchases by Latin America fell by 45%; purchases by the USA and Canada fell by 53%; while sales to the Maghreb countries and other African countries increased by 30% and 25% respectively. In the last four years, Spanish sales of textile and clothing machinery have increased to Turkey, India, Morocco and China. Sales to Germany have remained stable while other countries have declined due to temporary factors. TRADE BALANCE Exports Imports Balance Figures in millions Source: Amec/Amtex As a whole, Europe is the leading manufacturer of textile machinery in the world both in terms of sales and the number of companies as well as for the quality and technology of its products. This underlines the competitiveness of the Spanish exports that supply the world s elite in the sector. The restructuring of the sector taking place in Europe is becoming increasingly specialized and is concentrating its production on hightech textile manufacturing. This situation is highlighted by the relocation of textile production to emerging markets such as China, India, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey where the Spanish sector is fighting for a dominant position. The trend towards these emerging countries ranks them third, fourth, sixth, eighth, twelfth and thirteenth in the country ranking of Spanish textile and clothing machinery importers. 7
