2 PG 01 What is Design Thinking? Design Thinking is a process and mindset for problem finding, framing, and solving, always with the user at the heart of the experience. Design Thinking is a business tool. It is a systematic approach to innovation, based on the needs of the users. It can be used to develop products, systems, and processes. Design Thinking is also a mindset of action and agility it guides a process of prototyping and testing.

3 PG 02 Why does Design Thinking matter for business? Design Thinking starts with deeply understanding user experiences. Business innovations evolve from innovations that people really want. Design Thinking combines quantitative data and qualitative findings. Design Thinking encourages iterating the minimum valuable product as a prototype and seeks feedback on the user s experience. Learnings are incorporated and further tested with users before ideas go to scale. Design Thinking is a systematic approach of discovering desirability, feasibility, and viability. Design Thinking is a tool for productive cross-sector collaborations.

4 PG 03 What other businesses are using Design Thinking? Virgin Airlines centered its innovations around the user experience of flying. CEOs and developers spent time experiencing and observing customers. Google developers use Design Thinking as the basis for their product sprints. Umpqua Bank used Design Thinking when scaling up after a merger that made it the West Coast s largest community bank overnight, and has integrated Design Thinking into all parts of its corporate culture. The US Department of Agriculture used it to redesign the National School Lunch application form. Cities worldwide are adopting Design Thinking to make government more open, transparent, and easier to participate in. Toyota, IBM, 3M, the Mayo Clinic, DeWalt Power Tools... Design Thinking is everywhere!

5 PG 04 What is Field Guide? A 4-day, full immersion experience to learn and practice Design Thinking. Field Guide is led by expert Design Thinking practitioners. Time outside is central to the Field Guide experience. We ll explore and practice the mindsets and postures common to both the innovator and outdoor adventurer. Why Gould Academy? Gould Academy s IDEAS Center, inspired by the design collaboration rooms at Stanford s d.school, is Field Guide s indoor classroom. The IDEAS Center is Field Guide s basecamp, with an entire floor of maker and design thinking space. It offers plenty of flexible workspace with moveable white boards and furniture, plus three fabrication studios. There's a digital studio with 3D printers, a laser cutter, large format printer, and vinyl cutter; a physical fabrication studio with CNC routers, a band saw, table saw, drill press, and hand tools; and a media room complete with instruments, microphones, and recording software.

6 PG 05 Who Will I Work With? Field Guide is led by experts with backgrounds in Design Thinking methodology from places like Stanford and IDEO. They use it constantly in their work as top professionals in product design, advertising, digital strategy, education, and community engagement. Visit our website for full bios: Your Guides will include: Jonathan Kleiman Jon comes to us from Challenge Success, where he helps families and schools adopt strategies that improve student well-being and promote academic engagement. Before that, he worked at Google, helping Googlers become more user-centric when developing products. He also taught Design Thinking at Stanford. Jon has a Master s degree in Learning, Design, and Technology from the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Hannah Lippe As a consultant and strategist at Fidelity Labs, Hannah Lippe enables teams to use design thinking and other innovation methods to solve challenges for customers. Hannah s background in design thinking began at the Stanford d.school, and she s taught design thinking all over the U.S. and internationally. She believes in the power of play, practice, human-centered design, and the outdoors to unlock the creative potential within us all.

Managers, team facilitators, groups working across sectors Entrepreneurs, innovation teams, product designers Anyone who wants to better understand the people who use their products and services and strives to create better experiences You can attend Field Guide as an individual or a team. Team participation is encouraged. Teams that attend Field Guide together will gain a shared understanding of the mindsets, methods, and benefits of Design Thinking.
