All education programs are directly connected to the Ontario Curriculum and are designed and delivered by Children's Museum Education Specialists. In the Children s Museum In the Classroom Description Enrich classroom learning in an exciting and engaging environment that ignites curiosity and nurtures critical thinking. Students will engage in an interactive, facilitated program and will have the opportunity to explore and play throughout the Children's Museum. Bring the Children's Museum to your classroom! Our Education Specialist will bring lessons to life with artifacts from our collection and portable exhibit pieces. Programs get students up and moving and each one contains an outdoor learning component. In the Children s Museum Arctic Adaptation Discover the physical and behavioural adaptations of animals living in the harsh Arctic environment.

Junior grades will interact with a real narwhal tusk and dissect owl pellets in order to learn more about how these animals have adapted to their ever-changing habitats.

By exploring artifacts from our collection, students will learn about traditional fishing spears, go on an ice fishing adventure and celebrate their first catch with drum dancing.

Funded by TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Be inspired by the beauty of nature through the changing seasons.

Sculpt and paint with snow, find the colours of fall, create shadow art in the spring or collect plants to make dyes. The adventure is in their hands!

Fall/Winter Offered September 6th to December 23rd, 2017 Celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, by making traditional rangoli patterns.

4 In the Children s Museum Arctic Adaptation Discover the physical and behavioural adaptations of animals living in the harsh Arctic environment. Primary grades will discover the daily challenges the Arctic fox faces including hunting for food and finding shelter and water. Junior grades will interact with a real narwhal tusk and dissect owl pellets in order to learn more about how these animals have adapted to their ever-changing habitats. Arctic Alive Take a trip to the My Arctic Discovery gallery and become immersed in the Inuit lifestyle. By exploring artifacts from our collection, students will learn about traditional fishing spears, go on an ice fishing adventure and celebrate their first catch with drum dancing. They will also investigate traditional Inuit carvings and carve their own masterpiece out of soap. Art Through the Seasons NEW! Funded by TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Be inspired by the beauty of nature through the changing seasons. In this outdoor program, students will explore the natural environment and be inspired to create ephemeral artwork using seasonal found items along their journey. Sculpt and paint with snow, find the colours of fall, create shadow art in the spring or collect plants to make dyes. The adventure is in their hands! Celebrations Learn about diversity and multiculturalism by participating in seasonal holidays and festivals celebrated around the world! Spring Offered February 5th to March 30th, 2018 Experience the stories and traditions of Holi, India and Nepal s festival of colours. Celebrate the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil by throwing colours to create artwork. Bring the legend of Radha and Krishna to life by painting one anothers face. Community and Me The Sifton Street Where You Live gallery becomes a real buzzing town as students take on the roles and responsibilities of various community workers, interacting with each other and the structures around them. Students will learn about the meaning of community and how each person has a vital part to play in the world. Digging Into Plants Offered May 28th to June 28th, 2018 Dissect a seed to reveal what s inside that allows a plant to grow, and get your own seed ready to germinate! Explore our garden and discover how soils, plants and animals interact with and depend upon each other. Find something interesting? Use our video microscope to take a closer look! Dinosaurs How do we know about the giant creatures that roamed the Earth 65 million years ago? By examining dinosaur bones, footprints, teeth and even coprolite, of course! Students will hold real artifacts from our collection, become paleontologists and uncover buried bones, and learn how fossils and skin impressions are formed. Junior Builder Build with us! Using specialized creative builder sets, students will explore simple machines and discover how they make objects move by designing, building and testing mechanisms that meet a specific need and make our lives easier. Operation Solar System In this planetarium-based program, students examine the mysteries of space by discovering how far the planets are from the sun, learning the science behind shooting stars and impact craters, and holding a real meteorite. With a private star show, they will learn about constellations and the myths and legends that go with them. Pulleys and Gears Learn about force and mechanical advantage by getting hands-on with pulleys and gears! Students will build their own gear system to discover how separate gears work together to transform one kind of motion into another and/or change the speed or direction of an object s motion. By experimenting with various pulley systems, students will determine the advantages and disadvantages that come with each type. Forces of Gravity Get hands-on with non-contact forces! Discover the effects of gravity s pull and use your problem solving skills to design and construct a device which uses the resisting force of air molecules to slow its fall. Put your design to the test and drop it from the second or third floor.

5 In the Classroom Bridge Building Challenge Investigate the impact of different forces on structures in this hands-on program. Students will explore how shape can affect the strength and stability of a structure and use technological problem-solving skills to design, build, test and evaluate a bridge. Electrifying Electricity Explore electricity through collaborative experimentation. Students learn about parallel and series circuits by engaging in a human circuit activity. They will test various materials within a circuit to investigate insulators and conductors and get creative by building their own squishy circuits. Friends of the Forest Discover the importance of trees through hands-on activities that highlight their adaptations, parts, and uses. Students will become stewards of the environment by making a contribution to help the local birds and squirrels and will go on a critter hunt to discover how all the parts of a forest ecosystem depend on one another. Hooray for Music! In this melodic program, students will investigate musical instruments from around the world and play with percussion instruments. They will explore beat, rhythm and tempo and how these elements can affect the way we feel when listening to music. Students will turn their playground into a giant outdoor symphony and will collect natural materials to make their own instruments. Know Yourself Inside and Out Get the inside scoop on muscles, bones and blood! Students will piece together the puzzle of how our bodies work by exploring our sensory blood bin and experimenting with x-rays. They will also get their hearts pumping as they discover the connections between physical activity, healthy eating and their own well-being. Liquids Laboratory Discover the properties of liquids and solids as the classroom is transformed into a liquids laboratory. Students will create saturated solutions, investigate a non-newtonian liquid and brew bubbling concoctions. Plants and Soils Recommended date of delivery between May 14th to June 28th, 2018 Get the dirt on plants and soils and examine the interdependence of all parts of an ecosystem! Students will discover how plants are used in our everyday lives and will dissect a seed to learn exactly how it will turn into a full grown plant. They will use plants to create dyes and artwork, and will make composters to understand the process of decomposition. Renewable Energy Where does our energy come from? How do these sources of energy affect our planet? Students will learn about four types of renewable energy: solar, muscular, wind and water all through hands-on experimentation. They will evaluate the pros and cons of these alternative energy sources and will explore ways that they can reduce their ecological footprint. Rocks and Minerals By exploring the science of geology, students will experiment with the physical and chemical properties of rocks and minerals. Rocks and minerals will be tested and classified based on their hardness, colour, streak colour, transparency, lustre, texture and chemical properties. Science of Sound Make sound energy visible as you experiment with vibrations. Learn all about the properties of sound by experimenting with singing rods, tuning forks, Boomwhackers and a resonance bowl. Discover how human ear anatomy allows sound waves to be turned into electrical signals in our brain. Take Flight NEW! Investigate the characteristics of both natural and manufactured aerodynamic design using artifacts from our collection. Students experience drag with our running parachute and will apply their knowledge of the principles of flight by designing, building and testing their very own water rockets. Traditions of the Arctic What is it like to live in the Arctic? Students will learn about the Arctic environment and the traditions and culture of the Inuit. They will investigate what life is like as a child in the Arctic through our artifacts and will make their own traditional Inuit toy, an Ajagaq. Students will go on an animal tracking expedition in their school yard and learn how to identify various animal prints and scat.

Edukit resource packages include four lesson plans, collection items and program materials designed to bring the Ontario Curriculum to life. $100/month Rental Clockwork and Tin Toys Explore tin toys from our Alan Benninger Collection and discover their inner workings by dissecting modern clockwork toys. Experiment with working gear kits to find out how gears work in a system and how they can transform or change the speed, direction or motion of an object. Students will apply their knowledge of gears and clockwork toys to design and create something completely new. Curriculum Connections Grade 4: Science and Technology: Understanding Structures Inuit Art Discover traditional Inuit artwork and investigate carvings from our collection. Learn about modern stonecut print making, soap stone carvings and the influence of European explorers on Inuit artwork. Students will identify significant events in their life and tell their story through the traditional practice of tattooing, using washable face paints.
