Introductory Class Outline Introductions What is engineering? Who is an engineer? Overview of the course Sample projects
Introducing Your Instructors Michael McCorquodale Technical Lead Erik Hildinger Tech Com Rhonda McCaffery Tech Com Seth Goldstein GSI James Connolly IA
A Little Bit About Dr. M I defended my Ph.D. in UMICH in 2004 I have been in the Bay Area for over a decade until summer 2016 I have founded or run 3 start-ups in MEMS/circuits as well as invented technologies that have been licensed Inventor on Discera (acq. NASDAQ: MCRL): MEMS resonators for frequency control Mobius (acq. NASDAQ: IDTI): Frequency control devices e-sens (currently venture-backed): Wet chemical sensor instruments Cortera (operating on grants and generating revenue): implantable systems including circuits and microelectrocorticography arrays for the nervous system When appropriate, I will include relevant information from my industry experience; I also welcome any questions on my experience as it relates to this course
Introducing the Rest of the Instructional Team Erik Hildinger Tech Com Rhonda McCaffery Tech Com Seth Goldstein GSI James Connolly IA
Introduction to Engineering What is an engineer? Definition, characteristics, job description, etc. How does an engineer differ from a tradesperson? Electrical engineer vs. electrician? Mechanical engineer vs. car mechanic? How does an engineer differ from a scientist?
One Definition Scientific and mathematical principles Applies...to practical ends Design, manufacture (i.e. build/implement), test, operate different phases in the lifetime of a system
Efficient, economical engineers tend to value function over form Structures, machines, processes, systems engineers design/build/test/operate stuff different types of engineers work on different types of systems Aerospace Engineering Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences Biomedical Engineering Chemical Engineering Civil and Environmental Engineering Computer Engineering Computer Science Electrical Engineering Industrial and Operations Engineering Materials Science and Engineering Mechanical Engineering Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences
Characteristics of engineers good at math and science like to understand how things work like to solve problems like to improve existing systems like to invent new solutions (or even new problems) What are engineers good for? good at theory and practice good at solving real problems effectively and efficiently Etymology ingenious (skilled)
Introduction to Computer Engineering Computer engineers design/build/test/operate systems that involve computers. What are some devices you own that have a computer processor?
Overview of the course Goal: experience the life cycle of a substantial computer engineering project Microprocessor-based educational toy Microprocessor: general-purpose, programmable computer Device drivers for I/O devices Educational toy (runs as application on your microprocessor). User interacts with toy via input/output devices. Toy responds according to custom algorithm, computed on your microprocessor. Examples: music synthesizers, interactive stuffed animals, video communicators, rhythm/music games, talking globes, interactive audio books,...
Project completed on development board: Altera DE2 FPGA (field-programmable gate array) SRAM, SDRAM LEDs switches and buttons PS/2 keyboard USB mouse audio interface (speaker, microphone) VGA interface LCD display secure digital card serial port video camera also infrared, Ethernet, Flash RAM
Altera DE2-115
Course will introduce you to basics of many parts of computer engineering digital logic implementing algorithms in hardware implementing a computer in hardware programming a computer in assembly language interfacing to I/O devices digital audio operating systems
Course Workload 4 credits --> 12 hours/week lecture (3 hours) lab (2 hours) discussion (1 hour) group meeting (1 hour) CSE work outside lab (2-3 hours) TC work (2-3 hours)
Comments on IT We will be using both Canvas and This is somewhat experimental and might change Many announcements will be posted via Canvas Instructors are available via I am also on IM often and you can message me Review syllabus
Riscus: Wireless swordfighting vest James Connolly, et al.
Floppy Player: Compose and play music on floppy disks Austin Rovinski, et al.
Conclusion Let me know about drops so others can enroll: There is a large waitlist Additional comments from the Tech Com team Group team formation due at 10PM TODAY Thank you for your attention and I hope you enjoy this incredibly unique course
