ENGI1020 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware Lori Hogan, Lab Instructor - lehogan@mun.ca Winter 2019

What are we doing today? Overview of lab procedures, schedules, assessment Introduction to Arduino Uno + Grove Shield and Arduino IDE Lab 0 Walk-Through Submission 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 2

Overview What will we be doing in labs? Investigating and solving problems by writing code, namely C++ Learning correct ways to create variables, expressions, functions, etc. Using Arduino UNO + Grove Shield + Grove Sensors to SHOW how we can use C++ concepts Input devices like push buttons, rotary dials, light/temperature/loudness sensors, joysticks, distance sensors, and more! Output devices like LEDs, LCD screens, speakers, and servo motors Choice of 2+ mini-projects each lab for pair to implement Supporting documentation (procedure and C++ code) for all choices TA and instructor support in the lab to assist in implementing and testing YOUR design Learning other ways we can use programming to make life easier and more fun. 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 3

Overview How will we be assessed? Preparation To be completed and submitted via Peergrade.io before lab What will Prep be? Generally, algorithm design for lab + test plan for confirming your implementation. Once submitted, you will use Peergrade.io to provide feedback to other pairs before your lab slot. TAs will provide feedback on Prep as part of logbook assessment Procedure and Understanding Will be assessed based on your log book entry, to be completed and submitted via Gradescope after lab A common communication and recording tool for engineers Can be used to prove inventorship, as a legal document in various disputes TAs will provide useful feedback to help with future entries; feedback will assist instructors in providing marks 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 4

Overview Details on log book format Need Table of Contents table pasted/taped on front cover; update with each lab Write in pen, even figures and tables Put the date (at top) and page number (at bottom) on every page Strike through and date pages you don t use Don t erase or use correction tape; simply strike through information you don t want to be part of your record, like this It s good to be neat but more important to write your log book IN the lab 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 5

Overview Please take note The main point of lab sessions is to learn programming by doing it, using the Arduino + Grove Shield and sensors to show the results and log books to prepare, examine and reflect! Lab work will be done individually today, in groups of 2 in future NO CODE SHARING OR LOG BOOK COPYING BETWEEN GROUPS THIS IS PLAGIARISM. However, class discussions on the problems are allowed and encouraged! Teaching assistants are here to assist, not do the labs for you. TAs are NOT allowed to touch your keyboard or mouse. TAs will NOT be providing you with, or correcting your, code. TAs will NOT be assisting you with the lab if you have not attempted the preparation 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 6

FAQs related to Labs Who is my partner? In Labs 0 through 6, we expect that you will work with a different person IN YOUR SECTION for each lab. Why switch? Opportunity to learn from how other people think, program. What if I don t have a partner for the lab? Fill in form early, and by day before lab you will be paired with someone else (hopefully interested in the same mini-project). If you don t have a partner in time, you will have to complete the Prep solo. What if I want to work alone? If we have odd numbers, this may work. Let me know (lehogan@mun.ca). What do we submit? Which log book entry do I submit? Only one log book entry per PAIR per lab. 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 10

FAQs (cont d) Who keeps the equipment? You keep your equipment, I keep mine. Some labs you will use some of our components, and that will be signed out to you within the first five minutes of lab, and signed back in within the last ten minutes of lab. What if we don t finish in time?? You can still write a good log book entry!! We will discuss more next week. What if I miss a lab? If you know you will be absent and wish to make alternative arrangements, me (lehogan@mun.ca) with names, section, lab and reason. What if we need extra help? Check out the Success Centre schedule! What if I have another question? You can always contact me by (lehogan@mun.ca). 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 11

Let s Begin Lab 0!! Working INDIVIDUALLY today (more about Lab 1 groups near end of today) All equipment you need today is in your kit Arduino Uno + Grove Shield + USB Cable (will be part of every week) Grove LCD screen If not there already, log in to Ubuntu Linux 16x21 Can t log in or don t have a LabNet account? Let us know Bring up instructions for Lab 0 from course website Open Arduino IDE 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 12

Introduction to Arduino Uno Microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P Powered and programmed via USB connection Program begins running when Arduino is powered on Reset button resets program Many digital and analog inputs and outputs (that we access via Grove Shield) Leave Grove Shield on top of Arduino (less chance of bending shield pins) 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 13

Introduction to Grove Shield 1-Analog Ports: include 4 analog ports, A0-A3. 2-Digital Ports: include 7 digital ports, D2-D8. 3-UART Port: 1 UART port. 4-I2C Ports: 4 I2C ports. 5-Power Switch: when using Arduino UNO with Base Shield v2, turn the switch to 5v position. 6-Reset Button: reset the Arduino 7-PWR LED: Green LED turns on when power on. 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 14

Introduction to Grove Devices Each Grove device requires a 4-wire cable that can only connect ONE WAY to the device and the shield port Black wire matches with GND For Labs 0 6, you will be provided with instructions and diagrams outlining which shield ports to connect the required Grove devices 11/01/2019 Lab 0 Introduction to Arduino IDE and Hardware 15
