2 President s Message Thomas Johnson BMT Scientific Marine Services reached a significant milestone this year: 20 years in business. Over the years, the company has grown and changed to meet the market s needs as discussed in this issue. I believe we have prospered because we have truly partnered with our clients to deliver quality engineered solutions. As a testament to our commitment, this year we formalized our quality, environment and safety processes and achieved certification through DNV for ISO 9001, and Good processes are a requirement of running a successful engineering business. ISO certification is a significant milestone, but its main purpose is to provide our clients confidence in our processes and ability. That confidence allows us to do more projects. What really excites me about this business is working with people across the globe. Over this last year we have worked offshore Nigeria with an exceptionally professional company, Radial Circle (RC), led by Ranti Omole. We have been offshore with RC engineers on two separate projects and anticipate continuing work with Radial Circle on several more platforms offshore West Africa. In this issue we also announce our new office BMT Group has opened in Malaysia led by P.T. Lee. In Perth, we have hired a Regional Sales Manager with a background in offshore oil and gas, Martin Holbrook. Additionally, we have brought on board a Regional Sales Manager in Brasil, Alexandre Fornarzari. Alexandre will be based in Sao Jose dos Campos with our strategic partner NavCon as well as working from our office in Rio de Janeiro. Louise Ledgard continues to represent us in Europe as our Regional Sales Manager based out of the UK. Over our history, we have worked worldwide delivering projects in the Gulf of Mexico as well as Brasil, Malaysia and West Africa. In the past, we serviced our clients solely from the US. Our new focus on developing a more global reach started with the establishment of BMT Scientific Marine Services, Ltda in Rio and has been further enhanced by our purchase of a minority stake in NavCon in Sao Paulo State in November Looking to the future, our goal is to serve our clients worldwide by providing products and services tailored for each region. 3 BMT and MCS Kenny Establish JIP on Vortex Induced Motions of Gulf of Mexico Platforms BMT Scientific Marine Services and MCS Kenny, a subsea engineering and software solutions company headquartered in Galway, Ireland, have established a Joint Industry Project (JIP) to assess full-scale Vortex Induced Motions (VIM) of offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. The objective of the JIP is to use the GoM offshore platform field data monitored by BMT and to provide a solution to the long-lasting challenge that VIM presents for designing and operating platforms. Even though the issue has been addressed through model tests, numerical simulations and CFD models, VIM, a highly non-linear phenomenon, is still difficult to predict and mitigate. At present, there is no unique solution to this problem and significant conservatism is applied in platform design. Figure 1 - VIM Measurements for a GoM Spar BMT has been collecting and managing integrity marine monitoring system data from a variety of offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico for over ten years. This accumulated data represents a valuable source for assessment of real VIM occurrences and will compliment the additional studies and design practices related to VIM phenomenon. MCS Kenny has over 27 years experience in designing riser systems and providing advanced engineering solutions to the global oil and gas industry. Their expertise and extensive track record of compliant design across all riser types and water depths made them an ideal partner for BMT on this JIP. Figure 2 - Sampling of Gulf of Mexico Loop Current Data The scope of the project will include an investigation of the current process and a report on technology gaps. Then, the selected platforms will be studied and VIM events will be isolated and post-processed. In addition, an even bigger challenge is to identify and address potentially ideal metocean conditions for VIM to happen, in times when the platforms did not experience any significant VIM. A correlation of the field data versus model tests and design limits for the selected facilities will be conducted. Engineers will also conduct numerical analyses of the sample systems and all results will be reviewed by the JIP participants. After all studies are completed, the end result will be recommendations for upgrading Design Guidelines for platforms based on the field VIM. The benefits of this study will be a more accurate and representative VIM design, and most likely in reducing unnecessary conservatism and improving feasibility of risers and moorings. 4 BMT Expands Support in Asia Pacific With a population of over 28 million and a GDP of Billion USD (2011), Malaysia is a rapidly developing economy offering many attractive opportunities in areas such as offshore oil and gas and coastal infrastructure; including ports, harbors and terminals. In order to help provide integrity monitoring solutions for the new developments in this region, BMT has expanded its sales and support efforts in this region by opening a new office in Malaysia and enlisting a new Regional Manager for Asia Pacific. BMT has established a majority Bumiputra owned and staffed company with the appointment of two local Directors, Dato Mat Amir Jaffar and Dato Kamarudin Abu; both former ambassadors. Phong Thuan (P.T.) Lee has recently joined BMT to manage the operations of the company and comes to the business with experience in geotechnical engineering, offshore surveying and metocean projects. In addition, Martin Holbrook will join BMT as the new Regional Sales Manager Asia Pacific. Martin previously worked as a Business Development Manager at RPS Metocean, with experience in consultancy, oceanographic measurement, real-time systems and numerical modeling across the Australian and Southeast Asia regions. Page Europa Selects BMT for Quad 204 IMMS Page Europa has awarded a contract to BMT Scientific Marine Services Inc (BMT) to provide an Integrated Marine Monitoring System (IMMS) for the new Quad 204 FPSO that will replace BP s Schiehallion FPSO operating West of the Shetland Islands. The IMMS will provide real-time data on the local meteorological and oceanographic (MetOcean) environment, FPSO motions, and tanker proximity monitoring. The IMMS also includes a comprehensive structural monitoring system. Monitoring the impact of the MetOcean environment on the motion and structure of FPSOs operating in harsh environments is critical to determine an asset s integrity and safety. The system is comprised of a computer console, remote sensor packages, data acquisition software, and client display software for user-friendly operation. This year, the company rolled out a Quality Management System and a Health, Safety and Environment System that have been determined to meet the requirements of the internationallyrecognized standards. The ISO 9001:2008 certification reinforces BMT s commitment to provide quality products and services by: consistently meeting or exceeding customer s expectations in quality and performance, providing timely delivery to meet customer requirements as well as regulatory and statutory requirements, and continuously improving processes and systems. 6 BMT Launches CDC_Visual Interactive Data Trends Visualization Service BMT has created a new Statistics Data Trend Visualization Service called CDC_Visual for clients who already have active conventional monitoring and reporting BMT CDC Data services for their data stored on the BMT Client Data Center server. The CDC_Visual service provides users with transparent access to a custom created database and the ability to display trends in graphical formats for basic statistics on their platforms. The service can be customized to provide the access to all historical data or just to the most current ones. CDC_Visual is based on the BMT proprietary graphical user interface which interacts seamlessly with the database. The access to the statistics data is secure, transparent to users, intuitive to use, and user customizable. The CDC_Visual service is accessible from any computer platform that supports a standard Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). The service does not require installation of any BMT software on the user computer. The service is optimized for the Windows based computers, but it can be used from smart phones and tablets if user installs appropriate, third party software that is compatible with the RDP protocol. The service is solely controlled and executed by the BMT on the BMT servers. Software and hardware maintenance and updates are transparent to users. CDC_Visual is a valuable addition to existing BMT CDC Data service, which hosts more than fifty existing integrated marine and environmental systems designed and installed by BMT. It is particularly useful to marine assurance personnel and top-level management to visualize trends for relevant data during or after a storm, hurricane, or other significant event. 7 20 Years in Business: BMT Scientific Marine Services Marks Anniversary This year, BMT Scientific Marine Services is celebrating 20 years in business, commemorating the anniversary of the company start in May Scientific Marine Services started as a sole proprietorship, focusing on naval architecture consulting and shipping projects. The company became a corporation in 1992 and won its first major contract to provide Structural Monitoring Systems for (then) BP Oil Marine in Cleveland. The company ventured into Integrated Marine Monitoring Systems (IMMS) for offshore platforms starting in 1997 with the Oryx Spar Joint Industry Project. Since then, the IMMS and other instrumentation systems for riser and tendon monitoring have been a driving force in the business. Scientific Marine Services Founding Fathers (Left to Right): Bud Hennessy, Craig Campman, Jeffrey Lewis, Frank DeBord, Jack Lewis and Rick Goebel. In 1998, BMT Group acquired Scientific Marine Services and later established the Energy Sector, providing opportunities for joint projects with other BMT companies serving the Offshore Oil & Gas industry. BMT has continued to innovate and expand its offerings over the years. In 2007, the company developed the Client Data Center, an integrated service to provide quick, simple and secure access to measured and post-processed data from monitoring systems. In 2011, BMT launched the fullyqualified ROV-Serviceable Subsea Strain Sensor Assembly (SSSA) for monitoring the structural integrity of subsea structures (tendons, production risers, steel catenary risers, platform legs and braces, etc). One of major technological developments to come out of BMT Scientific Marine Services 20-year history was the clamp-on version of the Subsea Strain Sensor Assembly for subsea risers and pipes, launched in Today, BMT provides innovative integrity monitoring systems for a wide range of floating offshore oil facilities including their subsea risers and mooring systems. In addition, BMT deploys temporary monitoring systems for performance assessment, acceptance trials and forensic investigations. Heather has over 8 years of administrative, marketing, and receptionist experience; most recently having worked for J. R. Filanc, an engineering firm in Escondido, as their Marketing Administrator. Allen joined BMT as an Application Developer for our Software Group. Allen interned with us in 2009, where he developed an Excel-based system to read and process A&C data. He also interned at CareFusion in San Diego and worked as a technical assistance at Cal Poly Newman Catholic Center for 2 years. Cody is the new Service Manager in our Houston office. He has over 20 years experience in Field Service and Operations Management. He spent 9 years at CGGVeritas as Marine Field Serivce Manager where he led world-wide operations for support groups in Houston, UK and Singapore. Steve has joined the team as an Electronics Technician. Steve completed his certification in Project Management from Cambridge in the UK, and spent over 30 years working for Cubic Worldwide Technical Services in the U.S. and the UK as a Program Manager on numerous projects. Richard Le Amanda Moraes Brandon Ovalle Vanessa Robinson Richard is a new Project Engineer for our Mechanical Group. He worked at L-3 for seven years in Data Analysis, Process Control, and as a Project Manager in the Photonics Division where he led some R&D projects. Following that, Richard was a Senior Acousto- Mechanical/Electrical Engineer at Bay Audio. Amanda is the new Financial Controller at BMT Scientific Marine Services. She has over 14 years experience in accounting and worked for 6 years at ZeroChaos LLC in roles from Sr. Accountant to Director, Supplier Operations. She is fluent in Portuguese and will assist the Rio office. Brandon joined BMT as an Electronics Technician in the Houston office. Brandon completed his AA degree in Electronics Engineering from ITT Technical Institute and previously worked at Lomax Electric as an Electrician. Prior to that Brandon worked at Concha Electric for 3 ½ years doing both residential and commercial jobs. Vanessa is a new Project Engineer (Electronic) in Houston. She worked for the SAIC Stennis Space Center in Mississippi for 5 ½ years as a Systems Engineer and has marine and oceanographic experience after being the lead Engineer for the Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting Tsunamis (DART) project.
