2 2017 Integral Conversation Reimagining New Approaches for the Health of Humans and the Planet The annual conference was convened between November 9 and 11 under the theme Reimagining Health: Fostering the Health of the Planet and People. Hundreds of globally prominent business leaders, influential scholars, and policymakers had a thorough conversation on the global imperative of tackling environmental and human health challenges. 2

3 Welcome Dinner and Sharing Cello soloist Jian Wang shared stories and special moments along his musical journey. He said classical music could offer a more comprehensive view towards life. The health of humans and the planet must move forward side by side, said Marjorie Yang, Chairman, Esquel Group, during her welcoming remarks. She also introduced the Esquel Carpool, a mobile app developed by the company that has helped reduce over 40 tons of carbon emission. 3

4 Welcome Remarks In her opening remarks, Teresa Yang, Vice Chairman, Esquel Group, emphasized that economic development and climate resilience could live in harmony. The key was whether we were willing to change our mindset and explore new models of development in the face of the changing business environment. This was exactly why Esquel launched the Integral Conversation in the first place. Xinhong Fan, Deputy Mayor, Guilin, shared his thoughts on Guilin s development of sustainable industries during his welcoming remarks. He hoped that Integral Conversation, an international conference that brought knowledge and support from a wide range of fields, would continue to be held in Guilin. 4

5 Opening Keynote Dealing with a Changing Environment: Consequences of Technology and Globalization Zhiwu Chen, Director, the Asia Global Institute and the Victor and William Fung Professor in Economics at the University of Hong Kong, analyzed the impact of technological advancement, and the effects of globalization on the environment and neighborhoods, with an illustration of his hometown, Chaling County. He noted the uneven economic and social development of different communities and regions, and believed that the government could play a bigger role in distributing opportunities and resources. 5

6 Corporate Plenary How Corporations Coexist with the Environment The corporate plenary was moderated by Hau Lee, Professor, Stanford Graduate School of Business and Chairman, Sustainability Council, Esquel Group. Speakers shared insights on how their enterprises implemented sustainable practices, as well as explored a series of environmental protection issues that were relevant to the corporate ecosystem. The speakers were Douglas Hsu, Chairman & CEO, Far Eastern Group; Ning Li, Founder and Executive Chairman, Li-Ning Company Limited; and Yusuke Saraya, President, Saraya Group. 7 Luncheon Panel Yellow Earth Fund: A Story of Sharing Development Dividends York Liao and freelance writer Jesse Wong hosted the luncheon panel. Each of them shared a story: one on how to improve small communities through infrastructure, and the other on a failed and irresponsible large-scale development project. 8 Panel 1 Health of the Planet and City: Responsible Urbanization Left to right: Khee Giap Tan, Timothy Tong, Zhi Lü, Yung Ho Chang This panel was moderated by Timothy Tong, President, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Against the backdrop of global urbanization, speakers discussed how to achieve sustainable development through planning to enhance living quality in cities. The speakers were Yung Ho Chang, Principal and Architect, Atelier Feichang Jianzhu, Professor and Former Head, MIT Architecture Department; Zhi Lü, Professor, Conservation Biology, Peking University, Founder, Shan Shui Conservation Center; and Khee Giap Tan, Co-Director, Asia Competitiveness Institute, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, Chairman, Singapore National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation. 8

9 Panel 2 Health of the People: Building Preparedness to Respond to Social Transformation This panel was moderated by Xudong Yin, Head, Novartis Pharmaceuticals (APMA Region), and President, Novartis Group (China). The discussion addressed how population-wide abuse of antibiotics has disrupted the natural balance of ecosystems, resulting in the proliferation of superbugs that might pose a threat to human health in the following decades, and if artificial intelligence would be the future of medicine. Speakers of this panel included Sheng Chen, Professor, Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Hengpeng Zhu, Deputy Director, Institute of Economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. 10 Panel 3 Changing the World with Innovation and Technology This panel was moderated by Geoff Yang, Founding Partner and Managing Director, Redpoint Ventures. The interactive session discussed how different industries could leverage innovation to shape our future in the digital age. Speakers on the panel included: Jenny Gu, Deputy General Manager, WeWork Greater China; Tak Lo, Managing Partner, Zeroth; Victor Mao, Chairman, ShuKun Technology; and Miranda Wang, Chief Executive Officer, BioCellection. 11 Closing Remarks John Cheh, Vice Chairman & CEO, Esquel Group, shared the latest progress of Integral during his closing remarks. Located at Jiumeiqiao, Guilin, Integral incorporated its innovation concept to merge the production facilities with Guilin s natural scenery, demonstrating a new development model for the textile manufacturing industry. At this year s conference, we talked about the pressing issues threatening the health of the planet and humans, and how we can work together to achieve sustainability and enhance human well-being. I look forward to joining the next Integral Conversation with all of our distinguished guests, where we can fill another special page in the beautiful book of Guilin, John Cheh said. 11

12 Conference Dinner and Cello Performance We were honored to have world renowned cello soloist, Jian Wang, to perform the J.S. Bach Cello Suite No. 1 in G major BWV 1007, at the Conference Dinner. 12

13 Saturday Program Bike Tour Our guests went on a scenic bike ride along the Guilin to Yangshuo highway. The bike tour covered the most beautiful portion of the highway, it began at the Yanshan Dabu township and ended at the Yangshuo Putaozhen (Grape town). 13

14 Saturday Program Factory & Integral Visit A site visit to Esquel Guilin s spinning and garment factory, and Integral at Jiumeiqiao were arranged. The former showcased Esquel s modern factory operations, while the latter showed the construction site for the factory of the future, where industry and eco-tourism would come together as one. 14
