Early Model-based Event Recognition Using Surrogates (EMBERS), funded by IARPA with $13.36M Proposed a core model for this project, namely dynamic query expansion (DQE), which is an unsupervised spatial even detection model via Twitter data mining, outperforming the other three candidate models by 10%. Productionalize the DQE model into a long-term social sensor platform serving federal government. Proposed a novel generative model for spatial event forecasting method in Twitter. Proposed a novel query expansion method for heterogeneous information network. Proposed a hierarchical-multiple-source model (HMS) for event forecasting. Productionalize the HMS model into a long-term social sensor platform for federal government. Published 9 research papers (5 papers are first-author), own 2 IP disclosures. 8/2012- Now Feature selection-based predictive modeling, cooperated with University of Michigan., Event forecasting in social media, such as influenza and civil unrest forecasting is very important. But the feature sparsity and noisy nature of social media data are substantial challenges. To handle this, I propose several approaches for addressing different challenges in feature selection and event forecasting. Proposed a novel constrained multitask feature selection model to jointly utilize dynamic and static features (e.g., hashtags and acronyms) in social media. Proposed a new model based on higher-order strong hierarchy and fused-overlapping group Lasso to handle the hierarchical incomplete multi-source input data. Proposed a new multitask learning model that can jointly learn the event forecasting tasks in different spatial resolutions, utilizing their heterogeneous relationships. Published 1 first-author research paper in KDD Submitted 3 first-author papers, 2 research papers in KDD 2016 and 1 paper in TKDD.

2 8/2013- Now Epidemics modeling on computational modeling and data mining, cooperated with Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory (NDSSL), Virginia Tech. Proposed a core model for this project, SimNest, which innovatively bridges two communities, data mining and computational modeling community together to forecast the influenza outbreaks. Published 1 research papers in top conference. Submitted 2 research papers to prestigious journals. 8/2008-6/2012 Industrial process modeling, robotics, and computer vision. National Key Laboratory of Integrated Automation for Process Industry, China. Extended various kinds of discriminative models for establishing predictive model of mineral processing production indices; Proposed a hybrid Principle Component Analysis-based Modified Genetic Algorithm for model parameter optimization; Developed the models using MATLAB, implemented the models using C++, and MFC Published 1 paper and applied a software property.
