1 Turning Pages The latest issue of our Turning Pages newsletter is hot off the press. Big thanks to everyone for your feedback on issue number one. We put that first issue together at the start of the summer and it seems crazy that we re already heading towards the back end of the year. We really don t know where the time goes. But, we re not complaining. A busy schedule is a sign of a growing and vibrant business. And because we serve all corners of the globe, there s always something going on. At any time, there can be trade shows in progress, investment initiatives being launched, sectors are restructuring and, of course, there s a constant process of change in manufacturing methods and standards. Keeping up to date is essential and this newsletter is our small contribution to keeping you up to date. We hope you enjoy the read. Around the world, the Wickman family is reporting an upturn in the market and there s plenty of optimism. Our dedication to the needs of the metal turning industry and our ability to offer genuine support and practical machinery is paying dividends. We ve no time to rest though. We ve got to maintain our focus to keep things heading in the right direction. That means constantly developing new products, building new facilities in China and ensuring that we re bang up to date with the very latest in cost-effective machinery and production methods. You ll find more about what we ve been working on in this edition. Enjoy the read. Wickman on wheels Making excellent progress Congratulations are due to Scott Mainwaring, our design engineer. Scott has just completed his first year of a university degree in engineering. The course required him to study and pass three modules and with Scott s application, he had no trouble sailing through. If you re on the road in the UK and spot our van, give us a wave. We ve just taken delivery of a new Citroën for service visits and general use, and we couldn t resist adding the logos of all the Wickman family brands to the vehicle s livery. At the moment, the van s looking immaculate, but it is a work vehicle. As the motorway miles add up through the winter, we might not be able to keep it quite so pristine. Scott s about to start the second year. We d like to offer our good wishes for the challenges he ll face in combining his studies with work. But we ve got confidence in Scott, and we re convinced he ll smash it.

Breaking ground in China Finally, the construction of the new facilities for European Turning Technologies in China is underway.

There is a good way to go yet, but the new factory will have significant advantages over our current site.

We re looking forward to being able to introduce even more engineers to the advantages of multispindle lathe production in dedicated new surroundings.

3 Breaking ground in China Finally, the construction of the new facilities for European Turning Technologies in China is underway. And we ll confess that, as engineers, we have got a bit excited about the heavy earth-moving plant in use and the construction techniques being employed. There is a good way to go yet, but the new factory will have significant advantages over our current site. More space will be complemented by improved, purpose-designed services, allowing us to support the needs of even more customers. We re looking forward to being able to introduce even more engineers to the advantages of multispindle lathe production in dedicated new surroundings. Introducing the new Penta machine Mori-Say s latest model, the TMZ518CNC, represents one of the most significant developments in volume machining for 30 years. Mori-Say s smart design has eliminated much of the increased complexity of many modern sliding-head lathes. At a price-point roughly half that of other machines with similar capabilities, it s a fantastic way to achieve high outputs and outstanding precision with reduced manpower and for a modest investment. What s more, the Penta has been designed to suit the needs of a younger workforce. It s a full CNC operated machine, easy to program with simple push-button operation, super quick to set-up with no Cam changes and capable of lights-out operation. Sterling has been trading at very low levels, but the rising costs of imports could push up UK inflation to rates where the Bank of England increases interest rates. Such a move would strengthen the pound, but any changes are likely to be small, at least initially. Whatever happens, in the near future, with Sterling rates so low, there s no time like the present to buy British goods.
