2 Foreword Scope of the Conference Nanofair 2008 Nanotechnology is one of the key technologies of this century. This key technology will open the doors to improved materials and services, improve the quality of life and create jobs. Will these predictions become reality? How can research discoveries bridge the gap to application? Technology transfer needs a network of science, research engineering, application, training and public discussion. Under the title New Ideas for Industry Nanofair will present, for the sixth successive year, a platform for the exchange of ideas and the generation of initiatives between research and industry. The scope of the conference will be nanotechnology in the fields of materials, electronics, life sciences, optics and surfaces. An educated consideration of possible risks will be undertaken alongside a forward look towards new technologies and applications. Plenary Lectures will be given by internationally renowned speakers and time will be available in the programme for discussions concerning the identification of challenges and solutions, useful materials and processes and new cooperation partners. Contacts initiated by the participants are welcome and contribute greatly to the success of the conference. A poster exhibition widens the scope for the introduction of new ideas and results into the forum of discussions. 4 New Ideas for Industry Automotive Engineering and Plant Construction Medical Technology Textile Technology Electronic Industry Plastic Industry Aeronautical Industry The submitted papers should pertain to the following topics of the Congress: Materials Nanostructured materials and surfaces are of high technological relevance because they allow for the design of novel materials and coatings. Control on the nanometre scale permits tailor-made tuneable physical, chemical and optical properties. Nanoparticles are already used in modern sunblockers as well as in cosmetics. Different applications of nanostructured films and nanoparticles will be discussed. Electronics Aspects of nanotechnology are already widespread in microelectronics. Ultrathin barrier layers and gate oxides as well as high-k dielectrics are under investigation or already in use. In the next few years EUV lithography will become the method of choice for the generation of feature sizes of 50 nm and below. Supramolecular self-assembly makes it possible to integrate molecular structures into lithographic architectures on the nanometre scale and may open up the way to even tinier structures. Life Sciences Nanotechnological aspects are in widespread use in the life sciences. Drug delivery systems or long-term dosable pharmaceutical carriers are of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry. The use of DNA chips has increased rapidly during recent years and is going to be of the utmost importance for modern medicine and diagnosis. Biocompatible surfaces or the use of biological concepts and mechanisms in materials engineering are other hot topics in current research.

5 Optics Nanometre-scaled layers and structures are becoming more and more important in optics and photonics. Very thin layers are routinely used as anti-reflective coatings for displays, lenses and other optical elements. High-grade anti-reflective coatings can be created using nanoporous polymer films. Ultrathin layers are being increasingly utilized in solar cells and are a key element in the realization of large and brilliant displays based on OLEDs. Tiny nanoclusters make possible not only silicon-based light emission which can be used in optocouplers but also novel sensor devices and integrated optical systems. Further more, photonic band-gap crystals or the optical generation of spinpolarized carriers in nanostructures ( spintronics ) open up further future applications. Surfaces Very thin films or nanostructured surfaces are the most important applications in nanotechnology. Prominent examples are the protective carbon coatings in hard disk drives, which are only a few nanometres thick, or optical coatings on floating glass. Modem developments and research activities aim at the production of easy-to-clean or even self-cleaning surfaces such as are found in nature in the lotus flower. Experience Dresden Dresden is a 500,000 people city on the banks of the river Elbe. It is Germany s most dynamic city 2006 and one of the most dynamic business locations in Europe. This success is based on a great variety of industries with particular competencies in the future-oriented sectors of Nanotechnology, Microelectronics and Life Sciences/Biotechnology. Three universities and various institutes of higher learning produce a vast pool of qualified staff. Numerous scientific institutes and functioning regional and international networks create a productive research climate forstate-of-the-art solutions.

6 Submission of Papers If you wish to present your latest research results or if you have developed a new application, your contribution will be very welcome. We encourage you to send in your abstract to: Deadline: August 24, 2007 The abstract should be English and should include: Title of the paper Authors (company address, department, phone, fax, , personal title of the author and co-authors) Meaningful abstract (max. 1 page in A4 format, including illustrations) Assignment to a specific presentation topic Depending on the topic of your paper and the number of contributions received, the scientific committee will decide whether your paper should be presented orally or as a poster. Deadlines Submission of abstracts (1 page) August 24, 2007 Notification of acceptance to the authors November 12, 2007 Camera-ready manuscripts (4 pages) January 15, 2008 Congress Language The official language of the congress will be English. Oral Presentation Presentations will normally be restricted to 25 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion. Publication The authors of the accepted papers will be asked to submit a camera-ready manuscript of their presentation for the proceedings.
